What is Apple’s AI doing with your data?

As much as possible, Apple will try to process AI prompts directly on your device using smaller AI models. After fulfilling a user’s AI request, Private Cloud Compute scrubs itself of any user data involved in the process, Apple said. For example, when you use ChatGPT, OpenAI discloses that it uses your data to further train its AI models. With Private Cloud Compute, you theoretically won’t have to take Apple’s word that it doesn’t use your data for AI training. Apple’s AI models didn’t spring up out of nowhere.

Can Apple Rescue the Vision Pro?
  + stars: | 2024-06-11 | by ( Kevin Roose | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When I first got my hands on an Apple Vision Pro early this year, it felt like magic. I even used the Vision Pro in the back seat of a self-driving Waymo car, which I believe qualifies me for some kind of “Mr. But novelty fades, and today I barely use the Vision Pro at all. Some early adopters returned their Vision Pros for refunds, and lightly used headsets are selling for as little as $2,500 on resale websites. When I took a casual poll of other Vision Pro owners I know — mostly journalists and tech workers — I learned that few of them were using theirs, either.

And no product is more important to Apple than the iPhone. New AI features that provide a compelling reason to upgrade when Apple rolls out the iPhone 16 in the fall could boost the company at a crucial time. Here’s the thing: No matter how Monday goes, Apple isn’t losing its status as a tech powerhouse anytime soon. The latter scenario — assuming the features are compelling — could spur the next major iPhone upgrade cycle and have ripple effects for the entire company. “That’s the key: if it’s compelling and not backward-compatible, Apple will have the first upgrade cycle in four years,” Luria said.

Beijing CNN —China hasn’t issued any laws or rules to ban the use of iPhones or any other foreign phone brand, a Chinese government spokesperson said on Wednesday. Bloomberg/Getty ImagesLast week, The Wall Street Journal reported that China had banned the use of iPhones by central government officials, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter. China is the largest foreign market for the company’s products, and Chinese sales represented about a fifth of the company’s total revenue last year. The company doesn’t disclose iPhone sales by country, but analysts at research firm TechInsights estimate that there were more iPhone sales in China than in the United States last quarter. Apple also produces the majority of its iPhones in Chinese factories.

Apple TV, which is streaming Inter Miami’s Leagues Cup match against Mexican team Cruz Azul, is charging as much as $49 for Friday’s soccer spectacular. However, that price tag gets you access to MLS Season Pass, Apple’s new soccer package that includes in-season games plus the Leagues Cup that kicks off tonight. Last month, Apple slashed the price of MLS Season pass by half since the season is nearing its end. Last Sunday, Apple TV streamed a live unveiling event for free from Inter Miami’s stadium, giving fans their first look at the international superstar. Apple has also bought billboards in Miami displaying the goat emoji draped in Inter Miami pink, with the slogan “now on Apple TV.”

Apple’s Warning About China Business
  + stars: | 2022-12-05 | by ( The Editorial Board | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The news over the weekend that Apple plans to move much of its iPhone supply chain out of China is the most important signal to date that Western CEOs are wising up about business risks in the People’s Republic. Any corporate board that isn’t doing the same is doing a disservice to shareholders. Apple hasn’t announced its investment plans. But the Journal reports that the company is telling suppliers that it will move more assembly of Apple products elsewhere in Asia, especially India and Vietnam. This will no doubt be costly given that other countries lack China’s workforce of engineers and network of suppliers.
Musk has signaled an interest in rolling back many of Twitter’s previous rules meant to combat misinformation, most recently by abandoning enforcement of its COVID-19 misinformation policy. He already reinstated some high-profile accounts that had violated Twitter’s content rules and had promised a “general amnesty” restoring most suspended accounts starting this week. Along with European regulators, Musk risks running afoul of Apple and Google, which power most of the world’s smartphones. Meanwhile, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen walked back her statements about whether Musk’s purchase of Twitter warrants government review. She declined to confirm whether CFIUS is currently investigating Musk’s Twitter purchase.
Apple will manufacture iPhone 14 in India
  + stars: | 2022-09-26 | by ( Associated Press | ) www.nbcnews.com   time to read: +3 min
NEW DELHI — Apple will make its iPhone 14 in India, the company said on Monday, as manufacturers shift production from China amid geopolitical tensions and pandemic restrictions that have disrupted supply chains for many industries. “The new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking new technologies and important safety capabilities. We’re excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India,” Apple said in a statement. India is the world’s second-largest smartphone market after China but Apple iPhone sales have struggled to capture a large share of the market against cheaper smartphones from competitors. Apple is likely to shift about 5% of its iPhone 14 production to India from later this year, raising it to 25% by 2025, according to a JP Morgan report quoted by the Press Trust of India news agency.
