Apple needs its big AI moment
  + stars: | 2024-05-24 | by ( Jordan Hart | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +4 min
That's made Apple's lack of a big generative AI announcement so far particularly noticeable. However, one big sign an announcement may be coming at WWDC was the unveiling of its M4 chip, which Apple described as an "outrageously powerful chip for AI." The CEO spoke of "big opportunities across our products" for generative AI and promised that Apple is "well positioned" to take on the space. "We think investors will take any generative AI announcement positively," Morningstar tech analyst William Kerwin said. We'd expect any new-gen AI announcement to see strong adoption when released."

Investment analysts are coalescing around a few potential winners in China's car market after a 10-day auto show in Beijing put the ferocious competition on full display. "This year, we notice[d] a meaningful amount of foreign visitors who are Chinese brands' overseas dealers or importers," JPMorgan analysts said. Open to the public After two days of restricting access only to business and media, the Beijing auto show opened to the general public. Jefferies' analysts estimate the policy could boost China's passenger vehicle sales by 1 million units this year, evenly split between electric and gas-powered models. The analysts highlighted their Chinese car stock picks as Leapmotor, Geely and BYD, all rated buy and listed in Hong Kong.

Apple's Vision Pro headset was the buzziest gadget when it was released, but the excitement has fizzled. The hype and anticipation surrounding the Vision Pro were off the charts. Earnings per share rose 1% to $1.53, a March quarter record, and exceeded the LSEG consensus estimate of $1.50. This resulted in stronger-than-expected free cash flow, which is more important than operating cash flow because it is cash Apple can ultimately return to shareholders via buybacks and dividends. During the reported quarter, Apple paid over $27 billion to shareholders, including $3.7 billion in dividends and equivalents and another $23.5 billion via the repurchase of 130 million shares. Quarterly results Apple's services sales notched another record, which offset a slight miss in product sales and led to beats on gross and operating income. iPad sales are expected to gain double digits year over year, much better than the 5.9% expected on Wall Street.

Instead of glaring too much at iPhone revenue, Wall Street chose to focus on the positive. Apple said iPhone sales suffered from a difficult comparison to last year, when sales were elevated after previous shortages. Annual iPhone revenue peaked in Apple's fiscal 2022. While Apple provided some guidance for total revenue, it avoided offering any sort of forecast for iPhone sales. "For the last couple of years we were doing $90 billion and now we're doing $110 billion," Maestri said on the call.

Mark Zuckerberg appeared to take a jab at Apple's Vision Pro during Meta's Q1 earnings call. AdvertisementMeta CEO Mark Zuckerberg seemed to take a hit at Apple's Vision Pro in Meta's first-quarter earnings call on Wednesday. The comment appears to show his skepticism of the potential success of a product like Apple's Vision Pro. While Meta's Quest virtual reality headset competes with Apple's Vision Pro, Zuckerberg has said before that he doesn't imagine a future of people walking around with virtual reality headsets. Zuckerberg isn't the one executive at the tech giant to drag the Apple Vision Pro.

E.l.f Beauty CEO Tarang Amin told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday why his company launched an app on Apple 's new virtual reality headset, the Vision Pro, saying it's important to try new things. "So, the Apple Vision Pro is a continuation of — we're going to constantly test and learn on new frontiers and delight our community." According to Amin, a lot of E.l.f Beauty's success is because it is not "not dependent on any one platform, or any one way of going to market." But Wall Street worried about the state of the industry last week after Ulta Beauty's CEO Dave Kimball warned that demand for beauty products was slowing at a Wednesday conference hosted by JPMorgan . He notes that when Apple Vision Pro launched in February, it had four immersive video experiences available, and now there are … five. So when the Apple Vision Pro arrived, I was giddy with excitement to dive into the type of toy I'd dreamt of since childhood. The Vision Pro tries to answer the question of how you can use a computer without a mouse or keyboard. Apple Vision Pro marks the foundation of a new architecture of total digital isolation. Apple touted your ability to use the Apple Vision Pro to connect to your laptop, simulating a screen for your device. In the end, I followed the path of so many other Vision Pro early adopters and became an early returner.

Researchers have exposed a potential security vulnerability in Meta's VR headsets, a new study says. The so-called "inception attack" allows an attacker to spy on and control a user's VR environment. The headset also had to be in developer mode, which the researchers said many Meta Quest users keep enabled in order to get third-party apps, adjust resolution, and take screenshots. Researchers created cloned versions of the Meta Quest Browser and VRChat app. AdvertisementTo test the inception attack process with real people, researchers had 27 study participants interact with VR headsets while they carried out the attack.
