Customers shop at the new Apple Store at the World Trade Center shopping mall in New York City. The manager of an Apple Inc retail store in Manhattan violated U.S. labor law by asking an employee whether he supported a union campaign, a federal labor board has ruled in its first decision involving the tech giant. The Democrat-controlled board also affirmed the judge's ruling that Apple illegally barred workers at the World Trade Center store from distributing union flyers. At least two Apple stores in the U.S. have unionized since 2022, and unions are working to organize several other locations including the World Trade Center store. The ruling requires Apple to post notices at the store informing workers that it violated the law and informing them of their legal rights.

Read previewSome tech devotees already seem to be losing interest in Apple's Vision Pro just months after the futuristic headset hit the market. That's bad news for Apple, which spent eight years and billions of dollars creating the Vision Pro. Apple has seemingly responded to the growing disinterest by boosting marketing around the device, evidenced by the Vision Pro's prime placement on the company's website. The Vision Pro requires its wearer to attach a battery, start the device, and move through its interface each use. BI's Jordan Hart foresaw some of those issues back in February, writing that she was running out of reasons to wear the Vision Pro after just one week.

Why Apple is betting big on India

I think one estimate put, at one point, I think China was producing something like 90% of the world's iPhones. So when we talk about, you know, Apple manufacturing elsewhere, it's going take a long time to significantly ramp up iPhone production elsewhere. And you know, opening a physical Apple store often for Apple is a sign of a big deal. But you know, Apple looking at India going, wow, we've only got 7% of market share there, we could grow huge amounts. And of course, as we know, with Apple, the hardware is the, you know, one side of the equation, but also, you know, Apple makes billions of dollars off of its services business, which includes things like its App Store fees, it's Apple Pay, Apple TV, all of those other products and services.

Apple's Vision Pro became available to preorder on Friday at 8 a.m. AdvertisementPreorders launched for Apple's new Vision Pro early Friday morning, and it looks like customers were eager to snap up the first available units. The Vision Pro, with its sky-high price tag, was always expected to be a smaller launch than something like the newest iPhone. Earlier this month, analyst and Apple supply chain expert Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that the company would produce only 60,000 to 80,000 Vision Pro units for the initial launch. "Since the shipment is not large, I believe that Vision Pro will sell out soon after the release," Kuo wrote on X.

Apple smartwatches ads are displayed as customers take a look at smartwatch accessories at the Apple store in New York, U.S., December 26, 2023. Apple will again be barred from selling watches with blood oxygen sensors beginning Thursday, a federal appeals court said Wednesday. The decision is a blow to Apple, which was previously forced to remove the latest Apple Watches from its U.S. stores for several days in December. Apple may be forced to remove a blood oxygen sensor feature on its latest devices in order to keep the smartwatches on the U.S. market. If Apple must continue to keep its latest smartwatches from U.S. stores, it could complicate repairs at Apple stores, which often swap broken devices with replacements.

Anderson and Bullock refer to it as a "social tonic," or a hangover-free alternative to beer. It's one of the top-selling cannabis beverage brands in the U.S., according to market research firm BDSA. Bullock and Anderson project sales of more than 9 million cans next year — which, with prices starting at $24 per six-pack, would generate at least $36 million in annual revenue. Unsurprisingly, the co-founders say they're well-positioned to fill the void — even as research into cannabis' health effects remains inconclusive. A month after Apple's latest iPhones came out, analysts and investors are starting to see signs of slow demand in China versus last year's models. Sales of Apple's iPhone 15 models in their first 17 days are down 4.5% in China versus last year, according to an estimate from Counterpoint Research. Jeffries analysts say "weak demand" in China has knocked Apple off the top spot for smartphone market share in the country. It's a tough smartphone market for everyone. "Apple, we suspect, could be down five-ish percent — and the China market is down at least 5%," Counterpoint research director Jeff Fieldhack told CNBC.

Apple released a fix for an issue that caused the new iPhone 15 to "run warmer than expected." Apple said the problem was a software issue and not related to the Pro's titanium frame. AdvertisementAdvertisementApple released a software update to fix a bug that caused the new iPhone 15 pro to overheat after some users complained the phone was getting too hot to handle. The iPhone 15 has proved popular since going on sale last month, with strong sales in China and queues at some Apple stores around the world. That's despite some Apple fans being dissatisfied with the fairly incremental changes from previous models, with some users branding the iPhone 15 "boring" and "underwhelming" on social media.

Apple said on Wednesday its iPhone 12 model was certified by multiple international bodies as compliant with global radiation standards after a French watchdog ordered it to stop selling the handset on the grounds it breaches European exposure limits. The ANFR said it would send agents to Apple stores and other distributors to check the model was no longer being sold. Apple said it had provided ANFR with multiple Apple and independent third-party lab results proving its compliance with all applicable SAR regulations and standards in the world. The European standard is a specific absorption rate of 4.0 watts per kilogram. ANFR added the tests showed the phone complied with so-called body-SAR standards when it was in a jacket pocket or bag.

Hong Kong CNN —Apple launched an online store in Vietnam this week, in another nod to the growing importance of emerging markets for the iPhone maker. Markets like Vietnam, India and Indonesia are becoming more important for Apple as its growth in developed markets, including China, slows down, prompting the company to focus on places where it’s traditionally been less active. “Clearly, growth has slowed globally and thus put more pressure [on Apple] to aggressively go after emerging markets,” said Daniel Ives, managing director of Wedbush Securities. This has “been the core part of its success in China that now can be replicated in India, Indonesia, and Vietnam, among others,” said Ives. And while consumers are becoming more affluent, the company’s price points are still considered high in many emerging markets, noted Ives.

London CNN —US regional bank stocks look set to rebound Friday but are still down sharply this week, accentuating fears that federal regulators have not yet contained a crisis in the sector that could shake the financial system. Breaking it down: Wall Street is on the hunt for any signs of vulnerability in the banking system after the high-profile demise of Silicon Valley Bank, Signature Bank and First Republic Bank in a matter of weeks. While authorities stepped in to protect depositors at those banks, investors were left with stocks that were suddenly worthless. “I believe it really only ends after we get some type of government intervention,” Michaud told me. The value of short positions in regional bank stocks reached $15.1 billion in mid-April, up from about $13.7 billion one year ago, according to data from S3 Partners.
Apple on Tuesday opened its first store in India, highlighting the importance of the market to the iPhone maker's future. The first store, called Apple BKC, is located in the populous city of Mumbai. Cook posted a photo of himself and staff at the new apple store on Monday. Apple BKC runs on 100% renewable energy, Apple said. Cook traveled to India for the opening of the store, nearly seven years after his first visit as Apple CEO.
