New data showing a sharp decline in iPhone shipments due to weakness in China is unwelcome news for investors in Apple. Sluggish iPhone sales this year have been well documented, and they're the reason Apple shares have fallen roughly 9% in 2024. First-quarter numbers from International Data Corporation (IDC) show the extent of the weakness, with iPhone shipments dropping 9.6% year-over-year to 50.1 million units — its sharpest year-over-year loss out of the top five smartphone brands. That put Samsung back in first place for phone shipments, after Apple held the crown for all of 2023 . Shares of Alphabet are on the verge of a possible breakout ahead of the company's three-day Google Cloud Next conference in Las Vegas, where artificial intelligence will be a major theme. Shortly after the trade, Alphabet shares ran into a brick wall after some advertising weakness surfaced in fourth-quarter results and was followed by a controversy over Gemini's image generator that caused the company to pull the tool. The conference is expected to show that "Google is not being left behind, not being troubled by Search," Jim said. That said, we expect Tuesday's AI conversation to be limited to how it relates to Google Cloud. In one quarter — one off-cycle quarter that didn't feature a no new iPhone — Apple (AAPL) delivered a whopping $81.8 billion in sales. I came up with "own it, don't trade it" for Apple because there have been so many quarters like this one. The people who sold Apple shares on Friday no doubt sold it on their Apple devices. I would be more worried if Apple's customer satisfaction went down than I am that iPhone sales lagged.
