CNN —Rivers and streams in Alaska are changing color – from a clean, clear blue to a rusty orange – because of the toxic metals released by thawing permafrost, according to a new study. Ken Hill/National Park ServiceArctic soils naturally contain organic carbon, nutrients and metals, such as mercury, within their permafrost, the study says. “It’s really an unexpected consequence of climate change.”Researchers used satellite imagery to determine when the change in color happened at different rivers and streams. In Alaska’s Arctic rivers alone reside a variety of fish that are “critical for subsistence, sport, and commercial fisheries,” researchers wrote. Poulin said local communities voiced their concerns and observations to study researchers beginning seven years ago.

Several stocks are well-positioned to benefit from any power supply bottlenecks resulting from rapid growth in data centers, according to 11 analysts at TD Cowen who compiled a 169-page report. As a result, they're building data centers where power is available, investing in transmission lines and exploring the use of nuclear energy . Brookfield Renewable Partners , an international renewable power producer and developer, is another beneficiary of the data center boom. "The recently signed framework agreement... is a clear example of BEP's exposure to corporate [power purchase agreement] momentum associated with data center demand. That will contribute to the energy supply needed to power data centers.

This is the first part in a series exploring Baltimore’s overdose crisis. People in Baltimore have been dying of overdoses at a rate never before seen in a major American city. In the past six years, nearly 6,000 lives have been lost. The city set ambitious goals, distributed Narcan widely, experimented with ways to steer people into treatment and ratcheted up campaigns to alert the public. Many of those efforts to fight overdoses stalled, an examination by The New York Times and The Baltimore Banner has found.

President Joe Biden this month made climate jobs a major focus of his reelection bid. The administration plans to launch the American Climate Corps this summer with about 20,000 workers, but the funding is pieced together from various federal agencies. These prospective voters are also the target hires for the American Climate Corps, which will focus on reducing greenhouse-gas pollution in local communities and making them more resilient to extreme weather. Stevie O'Hanlon, a spokesperson for the Sunrise Movement, which mobilizes young voters focused on the climate, said the launch of the American Climate Corps was a big win. But the chances of Congress approving more funding for the workforce program are slim, given that House Republicans last year tried to block any federal spending for the American Climate Corps.

A team of researchers recently discovered a massive reservoir of hydrogen in a mine in Albania. The reservoir could be a potential source of clean hydrogen energy. But recently, a team of researchers uncovered a massive reservoir of hydrogen buried in a mine in Albania that could serve as a source of clean, hydrogen energy . If the hydrogen in the mine can be safely harnessed, the researchers believe it could be a key energy source. One of the initiative's goals is for the hubs to produce "more than three million metric tons of clean hydrogen per year," about one-third of the 2030 US clean hydrogen production goal.

Barbara Kingsolver’s novel “Demon Copperhead,” a riff on “David Copperfield” that moves Charles Dickens’s story to contemporary Appalachia and grapples engagingly with topics from poverty to ambition to opioid addiction, was one of the Book Review’s 10 Best Books of 2022. And — unlike an actual copperhead — “Demon Copperhead” has legs: Many readers have told us it was their favorite book in 2023 as well. In this week’s spoiler-filled episode, the Book Review’s MJ Franklin talks with his colleagues Elisabeth Egan (also an editor at the Book Review) and Anna Dubenko, The Times’s newsroom audience director, about Kingsolver’s novel and its enduring appeal. We’d love to hear what you loved (or didn’t) about “Demon Copperhead.” Share those thoughts in the comments and we’ll try to weigh in. I read a pre-publication galley, so when I read it, I didn’t have anyone to discuss it with and that almost killed me.

As he neared a retention pond, Clark pulled over and stepped out into the warm Florida air. A little before noon, sheriff’s deputies found Clark lying behind the pond, the handgun in the grass between his legs. A few years earlier, he had decided to reconnect with Larry Householder, the powerful speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives. Clark and Householder first met in the late 1990s, a couple of years after Householder joined the Ohio House. Householder was a self-styled outsider, none too fond of the Ohio Republican Party’s Reaganite establishment, which was, in turn, none too fond of him.

But the West Virginia senator’s Thursday announcement that he won’t seek reelection next year only refreshed a perennial question arising from his savvy instinct for accumulating power: What exactly is he up to? Second, the announcement immediately stoked speculation that Manchin is mulling a third-party presidential bid. And if Manchin can’t win in the MAGA stronghold of West Virginia, it’s impossible to believe any other Democrat can. West Virginia was once a Democratic bastion, however.

The White House is spending $7 billion to spur "clean" hydrogen. The goal is to spur the production of "clean" hydrogen, because the way it's currently produced is a dirty business. Anna Menke, the task force's senior hydrogen-hubs manager, said she wants the debate to move away from green versus blue hydrogen because each technology has its pros and cons. Korgel noted that the federal definition of "clean" hydrogen has been evolving, but should be more clear soon. The Internal Revenue Service has to decide what "clean" hydrogen is eligible for a tax credit worth up to an estimated $100 billion over its lifetime.

Since then, Chesapeake has been shedding oil-producing assets to focus on its competence in natural gas. U.S. natural gas prices have been sluggish in recent months, as oversupply and warmer weather erode producers' profitability. Some analysts expect prices to go up in the next few months, as a pick-up in U.S. natural gas exports creates more domestic scarcity.

The White House calls clean hydrogen “essential to achieving the president’s vision of a strong clean energy economy" and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. by 2050. Some environmentalists call hydrogen a false solution because it frequently relies on natural gas or other fossil fuels as feedstocks. Among those selected were the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub, based in West Virginia, and the Philadelphia-based Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub. Other projects selected include the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems in California, which will produce hydrogen from renewable energy and biomass. Big fossil fuel companies, renewable energy developers and researchers in university and government labs are involved, too.

U.S. oil output is expected to fall to 9.393 million barrels per day (bpd) in October from 9.433 million bpd in September, EIA data showed. A record 9.476 million bpd was hit in July. That's because U.S. exploration and production firms were still more focused on returning money to investors and paying down debt than just boosting oil and gas production. U.S. oil and gas production, however, is on track to reach record highs in 2023 and 2024 due in part to rising oil pries. Total gas output in the big shale basins will slip by 0.3 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) to 98.4 bcfd in October from 98.7 bcfd in September, EIA projected.

The number of prescription opioid pills shipped in the U.S. in the second half of the 2010s decreased sharply even as a nationwide overdose crisis continued to deepen, according to data released Tuesday. But Mougey pointed out that as prescription drug shipments decreased, illicit opioids — particularly heroin and illegally produced versions of fentanyl — increased. During that time, prescription drugs were the opioids linked to the most deaths in the U.S. The newly released data is the first deep look at what happened with prescription drug shipments later in the 2010s. By the early 2010s, policymakers and doctors were restricting access to prescription opioids.
