Wirecutter, The Times’s product recommendation service, tests many of the wares that clog Americans’ social media feeds. In today’s newsletter, I’ll explain how e-commerce, a $6 trillion global industry, became choked with junk. Paid to sellOnline shopping can expose people to a greasy influencer economy. When an influencer’s follower clicks a link and buys something, the influencer makes money. That’s why people on your social media feed are crowing about their 10 favorite Amazon finds or talking about how an expensive gizmo has changed their life.

Scientists analyzed Atlantic puffin genes and found they had been interbreeding in recent history. The hybrid group formed when two of three subspecies of Atlantic puffins began mating six generations ago, around 1910, according to a study published in the journal Science Advances. It's important to study the genetic changes happening in puffins right now so we can best plan for how to protect, "such an iconic species," Kersten said. That likely corresponds to the breakup of an ancient glacier over the Arctic, Kersten told Insider. Kersten and his colleagues hypothesize that this happened because climate change made the northern habitat unsuitable for puffins.

If you want to stay aware of your surroundings but bring down the volume of the world, you can try musician earplugs or invest in noise-cancelling headphones, which reduce the intensity of sustained nuisance noises. You can augment the effect by listening to masking sounds like music or white noise, too.

Shiffrin claims fifth overall World Cup title
  + stars: | 2023-03-04 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
March 4 (Reuters) - Mikaela Shiffrin secured her fifth overall women's World Cup title when she took fifth place in the downhill in Kvitfjell, Norway, on Saturday, but her wait for a record-equalling 86th World Cup win continues. Shiffrin, who won three consecutive overall World Cup titles from 2017-19 as well as one in 2022, is now one shy of the women's record held by Austrian Annemarie Moser-Proell, winner from 1971-75 and in 1979. Shiffrin is also one race win away from equalling Swedish men's slalom great Ingemar Stenmark's decades-old record of 86 World Cup victories. She broke the women's record of 82 World Cup wins in January. Home favourite Kajsa Vickhoff Lie won the race, becoming the first-ever Norwegian woman to win a World Cup downhill.
How much does insulin cost? People with Type 1 diabetes need, on average, one to three vials of insulin per month, according to the American Diabetes Association. Patients with Type 2 diabetes don't always need to take insulin, but those who do can sometimes require more than people with Type 1 diabetes. Even people with what's considered good health insurance coverage can face steep costs in certain situations. In addition to insulin and insurance premiums, Gibson also must spend $550 every three months for glucose monitors and $1,100 for insulin pumps.
