Yellen to tell lawmakers 'act big' on coronavirus relief

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Janet Yellen, U.S. President-elect Joe Biden’s nominee for Treasury Secretary, urged lawmakers on Tuesday to “act big” on the next coronavirus relief package, adding that the benefits outweigh the costs of a higher debt burden. I believe they’ll pass it, we’ll see another big package and that’s a short-term positive but a long-term negative. Yellen will reportedly stress the need to “act big” and take advantage of low borrowing rates to address what many view as a K-shaped recovery. “Reports suggest that if asked, Yellen will disavow a weak dollar policy whilst affirming commitment to a market-determined exchange rate. Press comment suggests Janet Yellen intends to argue that the US should ‘go big’ on fiscal easing.

That means the trial will not effectively start until after Mr. Biden is sworn in on Wednesday, officials involved in the planning said. The latter option may be more appealing to Mr. Biden, but it could undercut Democrats’ argument that Congress must move urgently to impeach and try Mr. Trump. Mr. Trump immediately seized on the investigation, using it as evidence to his false and discredited theories of widespread voter fraud.

Widen After Impeachment Vote Some House Republicans have called on Representative Liz Cheney to resign from her leadership post after she voted to impeach President Trump. Representative Liz Cheney had issued a scathing statement the day before the impeachment vote repudiating President Trump. Mr. Biden will detail his proposal, which he and his economic team have been honing for weeks, in an evening speech in Delaware. “This nation also remains in the grip of a deadly virus and a reeling economy,” Mr. Biden said Wednesday. Far more of a party institutionalist, Mr. Biden has promised to rebuild state parties and deepen investments in the committee.

“He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding.” “These facts require immediate actions by President Trump,” he continued. If Mr. Pence fails to act, an impeachment vote is expected Wednesday. The motion on Monday set off a high-stakes standoff between two branches of government, as House Democrats pressured Mr. Pence to intervene. They were confident they had the votes to make Mr. Trump the first president ever to be impeached twice. Sixteen groups — some of them armed and most of them hard-line supporters of Mr. Trump — have already registered to stage protests in Washington.
