Which diseases can pets transmit to their owners?

CNN: What types of diseases can household pets like cats and dogs transmit to humans? Dr. Leana Wen: Just as humans can transmit diseases to other humans, animals can transmit diseases to others in their own species. Sometimes, animals can transmit diseases to other species, and that includes humans with whom pets have had close contact. These diseases spread when a person is bitten by an infected tick that has fed off an infected animal. It’s not known how the man who died from Alaskapox contracted it, but a possible route is an infected animal biting the individual or exposure of an infected animal to an existing break in the man’s skin.

ROSEVILLE, Mich. (AP) — Officers in a Detroit suburb found a furry surprise as they patted down a theft suspect: A tiny blue-eyed puppy, zipped inside the man’s jacket pocket. Roseville police discovered the blue pit bull on Jan. 16 while arresting a man accused of stealing money from a bank customer. The palm-sized female, about 5 weeks old, was taken to an animal shelter, where staff nicknamed her Bandit until they learned her name is Frappy, according to Jeff Randazzo, Macomb County’s chief animal control officer. Frappy's owner is charged with larceny from a person, accused of stealing the customer's bag containing about $5,200. He was arrested hours later, and his attorney, Robbie Lang, doesn't believe the dog was in his pocket at the time of the alleged theft.

“It just brings us all to tears the loyalty of that dog,” she told CNN on Monday. The weather was bright and sunny on the day Moore went missing, Vanne-Brightyn said, noting an avid hiker should have been able to see where his car was parked from the peak. “[It] defied all of our lost person behavior that he went over the other side of the mountain,” Vanne-Brightyn said. It isn’t the first time a missing hiker has been found dead with their furry companion still by their side. Last May, 74-year-old Donald Hayes went missing while hiking a mountain near Prescott, Arizona, with his dog, Ranger, local authorities said in a 2022 release.

Here’s a roundup of the month’s most noteworthy movies and TV shows, as covered by The Wall Street Journal’s critics. As one might guess, not all the animals in the new “Animal Control” are pests in the traditional sense, but the bona-fide wildlife has its peculiarities. Pythons commit assault. A weasel runs into an open fireplace and then sets a couch on fire. They’re practically human.

A weasel runs into an open fireplace and then sets a couch on fire. Despite stretching some very basic, pan-species laws of self-preservation, “Animal Control” abides very successfully with the rules of situation comedy. One: Something funny is funny everywhere, regardless of circumstance—though an Animal Control office does offer opportunities for some novel chaos. If this requires conforming to some standard characterizations, well, there are reasons some things become standards.
