☆ Sea robins are fish that use their legs to ‘taste’ the seafloor

CNN —Some types of sea robins, a peculiar bottom-dwelling ocean fish, use taste bud-covered legs to sense and dig up prey along the seafloor, according to new research. A species of sea robins called Prionotus carolinus studied by the researchers used their legs for walking, digging and sensing the seafloor. And the fish that lacked sensory capabilities and used their legs mainly for walking were striped sea robins, or Prionotus evolans. The digging sea robins had shovel-shaped legs that were covered in protrusions called papillae, which are similar to the taste buds on our tongues. Both researchers said they are keen to uncover the exact mechanisms behind the evolution of the sea robins’ sensory appendages.

CNN —Bangladesh’s Supreme Court on Sunday rolled back some of the controversial quotas on government jobs which sparked violent protests, Reuters reported, citing local media. Since the roles are linked to job security and higher pay, the quota system has angered many in the country, particularly students and young people, as Bangladesh faces high unemployment levels. In 2018, the civil service quota system was scrapped following similar protests but in June the High Court reinstated it, ruling its removal unconstitutional. On July 10, the Supreme Court suspended the quotas for one month while it took up the case. According to local media, the curfew was extended until after the Supreme Court hearing and will continue for an “uncertain time” following a two-hour break for people to gather supplies, Reuters reported.

Shares of Illumina jumped more than 20% to $233.50 in morning trade, and have declined 7.2% since the deal closed in August 2021. Icahn plans to nominate three people to Illumina's board at the company's upcoming shareholder meeting, he said in a letter sent to shareholders. "We have therefore determined to launch a proxy contest to attempt to gain board representation," Icahn said, adding he feared the company's board will continue to pursue the Grail transaction. Icahn said his nominees - Vincent Intrieri, Jesse Lynn and Andrew Teno - would help keep Illumina from "sinking further".

NEW YORK, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Activist investor Irenic Capital Management is urging Theravance Biopharma Inc (TBPH.O) to initiate a review of strategic alternatives, including a full sale, and to add a shareholder to its board, according to a letter seen by Reuters. Irenic owns a 4.2% stake in the biotechnology company and has criticized its lagging valuation and stock-based compensation to its chief executive and board chair, Rick Winningham. Irenic also called on Theravance to use excess cash to immediately issue a $300 million special dividend to shareholders. They suggested Dodge as a director candidate but wrote in the letter that the company rejected him as a candidate. Irenic is the latest hedge fund to propose changes at poorly performing biotech companies.
