Irvine,” revealing that it probably belonged to British climber Andrew “Sandy” Irvine. Irvine’s disappearance on Everest in 1924, alongside his compatriot George Mallory, is one of mountaineering’s biggest mysteries – with a solution that has the potential to change history. That is, until this latest expedition, when the National Geographic team, which included “Free Solo” co-director Jimmy Chin, discovered a foot inside what they believe is Irvine’s boot. Irvine was 22 years old when he disappeared on Mount Everest. “I have lived with this story since I was a seven-year-old when my father told us about the mystery of Uncle Sandy on Everest,” she added.

Picture Books That See Shadows in a New Light

Which is why it’s so refreshing to find two picture books that present shadows for what they are: the non-nefarious interplay of light and dark. Ultimately, her shadow is joined in a meadow by those of two other children and a dog (the four of them now “friendly” shadows). It is in the presence of harsh light — rather than the depths of darkness — that the story turns somber. It was a thinking shadow, a shadow you could feel but not see. Feng’s soft-lined illustrations visually articulate the essence of Handy’s “stretching shadows,” easing day into night.

CNN —A fire broke out in the spire of the cathedral in the French city of Rouen on Thursday morning. The blaze erupted at the top of the spire of the gothic Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral in Rouen, in the northern region of Normandy. The prefecture confirmed on X that the cathedral was evacuated following the outbreak of the flames and that emergency services were working at the scene. “I turn around and I see the cathedral spire, the tarpaulin that was protecting the restoration work, which was burning, big flames, black smoke.”The construction of Rouen cathedral dates from the 12th century and it was built and rebuilt over a period of 800 years. This blaze comes five years after a massive fire broke out in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, devastating large parts of the 850-year-old church.

Opinion: Destined to be a lame duck

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. When Biden and Trump meet in a debate on CNN Thursday, expect part of the audience to be wondering exactly who and what will come next. Biden, who’s battling low approval ratings, is sticking with Vice President Kamala Harris, whose polls are also bleak. There were 28, and we’ve had 11 so far this year, Bridget Johnson noted in the first of a CNN Opinion series about America’s preparedness. “It’s a measure of his hold on American society that he’s still revered a half-century later,” wrote Frederic J. Frommer.

Uncle Nate was Jewish. German war records told a different story: Nate was taken prisoner and died of his wounds at a German Airforce hospital. “Did they find Uncle Nate’s femur yet, Mom?” my daughter Naomi would ask while eating her salad. But World War II veteran Harold Terens and his sweetheart Jeanne Swerlin proved that love is eternal as they tied the knot Saturday inland of the D-Day beaches in Normandy, France. Their respective ages — he’s 100, she’s a youngster of just 96 — made their nuptials an almost double-century celebration. “(The town of) Carentan was happy to host your wedding, and us, your wedding dinner,” he told the couple. GOOD MATERIAL, by Dolly AldertonAndy, the 35-year-old struggling comedian who narrates most of Dolly Alderton’s new novel, “Good Material,” has been freshly dumped by his ex, Jen, for mysterious reasons. Like Rob in Nick Hornby’s “High Fidelity,” an obvious inspiration, Andy knows his relationship had its problems. In the process, maybe he can get to the bottom of why the rest of his life has derailed, too. His friends won’t meet for impromptu drinks because they have to get up early to take care of their children. In “Good Material,” as in all of her writing, Alderton excels at portraying nonromantic intimate relationships with tenderness and authenticity.

CNN —To immerse yourself in the pages of new book “Candy, Andy & The Bearandas” is to delve into a surreal world that riffs on the peculiar while invoking the familiar. Alan Dein/Anderson Entertainment/Courtesy Four Corners Books“It’s very strange, dad never once mentioned ‘Candy’,” Jamie Anderson, the creator’s son, told CNN in an interview. But it was only after he died (in 2012), somebody sent me an eBay listing (of a “Candy” comic) and said, ‘did you know this is one of your dad’s as well?’. “They look like a parody in a way, when you (compare) ‘Candy and Andy’ and ‘Thunderbirds,’ you can scarcely believe they were by the same company.”Some scenes feature the Candy and Andy mannequins with real people. Americans can’t get enough of Halloween candy. Halloween candy sales grew 14% between 2021 and 2022 and this year is on track to be the same. And in the world of chocolate, milk chocolate is king: more people bought milk chocolate last Halloween season than all other non-chocolate candy combined. But while per unit sales of chocolate candy have remained largely stable compared with five years ago, non-chocolate candy is the growth market. Americans bought roughly 7.8% more packages of non-chocolate candy last Halloween season compared to 2018, while package sales of chocolate shrank by 2.5%.

NOTHING SPECIAL, by Nicole FlatteryIn the Irish writer Nicole Flattery’s exquisitely disorienting debut novel, “Nothing Special,” Mae, the daughter of an alcoholic waitress, spends her youth in 1960s New York City riding up and down department store escalators, getting nowhere except deeper into her own dissatisfaction. What she does do is observe, and the one thing that is clear is the rapacity of her speculation. She subjects her world and the people who populate it to a ravenous metamorphosing, a proxy for the closeness she craves and fears. As she listens, she grows closer to the disembodied voices, and to the revealing silences in between, than to anyone else around her. “It felt like my life had been reduced to nothing but the tapes, that I no longer recognized the sound of my own voice,” Mae narrates.

Kit Kat Cereal is hitting US shelves

General Mills is betting a lot of people do, as it is launching Kit Kat Cereal nationwide beginning this month at $5.69 for a standard-size box. A limited edition Spider-Verse Cereal – red “spiderberry” puffs with blue and white marshmallows – will be selling for a less expensive $2.99 in stores. General Mills is also launching miniature Lucky Charms and Cocoa Puffs, adding to its miniature Trix, both of which are priced at $5.69. They could either be eaten dry or be mixed in with cold water to create instant milk and cereal. Cereal sales surged to over $9 billion in 2020 or up 9% from 2019, as millions worked from home, according to data from NielsenIQ.
Given the outsize attention, some think M&M’s announcement is a PR stunt to hype its upcoming Super Bowl commercial. M&M’s relatively subtle changes aimed at inclusivity didn’t seem like they were designed to spark much controversy, if any. At the Washington Post, for example, an opinion piece declared “the M&M’S changes aren’t progressive. “In the last year, we’ve made some changes to our beloved spokescandies,” M&M’s said. “The original colorful cast of M&M’s spokescandies are, at present, pursuing other personal passions,” Wesley said.
The brand said it believes Maya Rudolph will ‘champion the power of fun to create a world where everyone feels they belong.’The M&M characters are taking a break a year after their new looks sparked controversy. The Mars Inc. brand said Monday that its candy characters—known as “spokescandies”—will begin an “indefinite pause” from their duties. Comedian Maya Rudolph will take their place as the brand’s spokesperson and will star in the candy’s upcoming advertisement at Super Bowl LVII in February, the brand said.
After controversy following its mascot refresh last year, M&M's announced Monday it is taking an "indefinite pause" from using its candy-coated mascots, saying the "last thing M&M’s wanted" was to be "polarizing." M&M’s said in a tweet that it is instead tapping actor Maya Rudolph as its spokesperson, someone the brand said "America can agree on." He made similar complaints about the candies last January after M&M’s announced a new, inclusive look. “But now we get it — even a candy’s shoes can be polarizing," the brand wrote. Others speculated the announcement could be a publicity stunt made ahead of the Super Bowl, which takes place on Feb. 12.
I’m seeing the words “recession,” “crypto,” “debt ceiling,” the “M&M’s spokescandy scandals…”And yet, I am bound my duty as a journalist not to shy away from the hard candy shell news. I know, I know, you’re all tired of the media’s relentless coverage of the M&M Spokescandy Saga, aka the Culture War Battle that is shaping social discourse in the Year of Our Lord 2023. The company claims it didn’t think anyone would notice when it released the changes to the characters’ appearance. “We definitely didn’t think it would break the internet,” it said in a press release that frankly reeked of champagne and high fives. Oh you didn’t think anyone would notice, M&M marketing wizards?
“In the last year, we’ve made some changes to our beloved spokescandies,” the chocolate candy brand said in a statement Monday. The Green M&M, pre-makeover, is seen here in her go-go boots. Anthony Behar/Sipa USA/AP“[Rudolph] will serve as the brand’s new spokesperson, allowing the colorful cast of M&M’S spokescandies to step away and embrace a new path to pursue other passions,” An M&M’S spokesperson told CNN in an email. A petition to “keep the green M&M sexy” garnered over 20,000 signatures. Purple was recently deployed as part of a limited-edition pack of purple, brown and green M&M’S — the colors of the female spokescandies — in honor of International Women’s Day.
New York CNN —M&M’S is making a statement with its latest candy pack, which features an all-female set of characters — including Purple, its newest addition. Purple, the “spokescandy” announced last year (and the first new M&M’S character in a decade), is a purple peanut M&M. An all-female M&M pack is now on sale. The all-female pack quickly sparked “culture wars” outrage on right-wing media, notably at Fox News. “Now we know for certain that M&M’S is a cultural icon.”M&M’S has no plans to restore Green’s look.
“The Chinese Communist Party is weaponizing technology companies to further its geopolitical goals,” Rubio said in an email. Human rights advocates and lawmakers are concerned Iranian authorities could use Tiandy’s video surveillance technology to help squelch a wave of anti-regime protests in the country. The Biden administration last month effectively banned the sale or import of new equipment from a number of Chinese surveillance firms. China has strongly rejected U.S. criticism of Chinese tech companies and of its treatment of Uyghurs or other Muslim minorities in the country. But he said it was “absurd” to portray Chinese technology as a security threat.
So on a Saturday night in February he stood in his Aunt Brandy’s doorway, rocking on his heels, telling her he was heading out. Sincere lived with his aunt in a second-floor apartment on the city’s South Side, in a neighborhood of small single-family homes and brick two-flats. “I didn’t do anything to anybody.”Every day, Sincere went on odysseys, roaming the surrounding blocks. He rang bells and knocked on doors, asking to do odd jobs. But he and Anyah grew up together on the same block, and Sincere sometimes spent the night there.
Tiandy is one of several Chinese companies at the center of China’s vast domestic surveillance network, experts and human rights advocates say. A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington, Liu Pengyu, said the embassy could not speak on behalf of Chinese private companies. Last week, the Biden administration effectively banned the sale or import of new equipment from a number of Chinese surveillance firms but Tiandy Technologies was not named. Maya Wang, senior China researcher at Human Rights Watch, said Chinese surveillance technology tends to be less expensive and more attractive for some authoritarian governments. Like other video technology companies in China, Tiandy’s software includes an ethnicity tracking tool that supposedly can digitally identify someone’s race.

The new film follows a now-grown Ralphie Parker, the blond protagonist again played by actor Peter Billingsley. The teaser ends with a closeup of the adult Ralphie, still blue-eyed and bespectacled, as he smiles for the camera. “A Christmas Story Christmas” premieres on HBO Max on November 17. Brandy is speaking out after reports that she suffered a health scare. On Oct. 12, TMZ, citing anonymous law enforcement sources, reported that the 43-year-old musician had been taken to a Los Angeles hospital after emergency medical services responded to a call at her home. A few hours after the news broke, Brandy posted an update about her health on her Instagram story. “To my beloved fam, friends, and starz thank you for sending love and light my way,” the statement said. Earlier this year, Brandy channeled the late legendary singer during the NFC championship game between the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers.
However, sea level rise to date has already been shown to have contributed to catastrophic damage done by storms and flooding, and accelerating sea level rise projected over the next century is expected to worsen the problem. “No one is calling the sea level rise experienced so far catastrophic, but global sea level rise has accelerated since about 1970 and will continue to accelerate until global temperatures are stabilized. Sea level rise is computed using monthly or annual averages to avoid this confusion,” he said (here). The analyses forecast accelerating sea level rise in the region, with a possible rise of about 2 feet to as much as 9 feet by 2100. Two side-by-side images of the Statue of Liberty are not evidence of the degree of sea level rise, or that sea level rise to date has had no catastrophic impact.
