SEE NEW POSTSMcCarthy says Trump 'bears responsibility for Wednesday's attack' House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said in remarks on the House floor that Trump is to blame for last Wednesday's attack on the Capitol — but he shouldn't be impeached for it. "The president bears responsibility for Wednesday's attack on Congress by mob rioters. He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding," McCarthy said on the House floor before the impeachment vote. McCarthy, however, said he opposes impeaching Trump, suggesting the censure of the president and a bipartisan commission to investigate the events leading up to the riot might be the better options. WASHINGTON — We don’t know who’s going to win Tuesday’s twin Senate runoffs in Georgia — given the close initial results in November, the close and scarce polling, and the uncertainties about turnout in January. And, like we saw in November, don’t be surprised if it takes a day or more to determine the winners in these two runoffs. As the AP reminds us, Georgia doesn’t count ballots — including absentee ones — until the polling places close at 7:00 p.m. Democrats, including the Georgia Senate candidates, have echoed the president’s call for a round of $2,000 stimulus checks and want to fund state and local budgets. But maybe most important of all, 2020 will likely stand as a demarcation in our politics and society for years to come. Did it close the door on alternative facts, political nepotism and demagoguery from the White House? The first two come from HUD nominee Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio, and White House adviser Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-La. If Haaland and Fudge are confirmed and resign their seats, the House majority could stand at 219 — just one seat more than a full majority. In the 2017-2018 cycle (when Republicans held the House majority) Democratic candidates in special congressional elections usually outperformed the 2016 results by double-digit margins.

Slideshow ( 2 images )(Reuters) - Abby Finkenauer, one of the youngest women in Congress, is among the contenders to become Democratic President-elect Joe Biden’s Labor Secretary, according to three people familiar with the selection process. Finkenauer, 31, an Iowa congresswoman who is personally and politically close to Biden, is among at least five names being considered for the Labor Secretary post, the people familiar with deliberations told Reuters. The sources asked not to be named because they are not authorized to discuss Biden’s search process. Biden campaigned for Finkenauer when she successfully unseated Republican incumbent Rod Blum in the 2018 midterm congressional elections. When Biden announced his presidential run in 2019, Finkenauer was an early supporter and campaigned for him during the Iowa caucuses.

The 2020 presidential election wasn’t really that close. He’s ahead by 81,000 votes in Pennsylvania (nearly twice Trump’s 44,000-vote win there four years ago). And he’s ahead by more than 20,000 votes in Wisconsin (almost the same as Trump’s 23,000-vote victory there in 2016). The 2020 presidential race looked close the 12 hours after the first polling places closed on Election Night. But nearly three weeks later — with almost all the votes counted — it’s now safe to say the Biden-vs.-Trump contest wasn’t that close.
