CNN —The woman mayor of a town in western Mexico was shot dead Monday, authorities said, just hours after the country elected its first female president in a race marred by deadly attacks on candidates. Yolanda Sánchez Figueroa, mayor of Cotija in Michoacán state, was walking from a gym back to her house with her bodyguard when they were shot by people in a white van, the state attorney general said in a statement. Both Sánchez Figueroa and her bodyguard later died in hospital, it said, adding that an investigation has been launched. According to the think tank Mexico Evalua, around 95% of all crimes nationwide went unsolved in the country in 2022. Sánchez Figueroa had previously been kidnapped in September 2023 in the city of Zapopan, and was released three days later.

The president’s proclamation, announced Tuesday, still allows for the normal flow of commerce and legal immigration across the border. But it bars migrants who cross the border illegally from seeking asylum once a daily threshold is met. Border authorities encountered around 3,500 migrants crossing the border unlawfully on Monday, according to a Homeland Security official, above the threshold needed for the executive action to take effect. And immigrant rights advocates warn that closing the border to asylum seekers will endanger vulnerable people and ultimately make the border less safe.

This violence is the most formidable challenge that Claudia Sheinbaum, whom the nation has just elected by a huge margin to be its first female president, will have to confront when she takes power in October. The run-up to the election was one of the most violent campaigns in Mexico’s recent history. Ms. Sheinbaum did not put this bloodshed at the core of her campaign. The votes are still being counted, but this much is clear: Mexico’s leftist governing party dominated Sunday’s elections. WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden is expected to sign an executive action Tuesday that would temporarily shut down the southern border when daily migrant crossings between legal ports of entry exceed 2,500, with the border reopening when the number falls below 1,500, according to three people familiar with the discussions. CNN —A top Mexican cartel member known as ‘El Nini,’ who was one of America’s most-wanted criminals for his alleged role in the fentanyl trade, has been extradited to the United States. Biden has previously described El Nini as one of America’s most-wanted criminals. The US State Department offered a reward of up to $3 million for information leading to his arrest and he was detained in Mexico in November of last year. The State Department also said Pérez Salas was responsible for the security apparatus of Los Chapitos, a faction of the Sinaloa cartel. “I am grateful to our Mexican government counterparts for their extraordinary efforts in apprehending and extraditing El Nini,” US Attorney General Merrick Garland’s office said in a statement.

A stage in northern Mexico where a presidential candidate was campaigning collapsed after a gust of wind blew through the area on Wednesday night, leaving at least five people dead and at least 50 others injured, a state governor said. The stage collapsed in a suburb of Monterrey, in the state of Nuevo León, during an event attended by the progressive candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez and other members of the Citizens’ Movement party. The collapse was caused by strong wind, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico said on social media. Samuel García, the governor of Nuevo León, announced the deaths and injuries in a news conference. The stage, which had been erected on a baseball field in the city of San Pedro Garza García, was the site of a campaign event for the Citizens’ Movement party’s candidate for the city’s mayoral election, Lorenia Canavati.

CNN —Threatened howler monkeys have been dropping dead from trees in Mexico’s southeastern tropical forests in recent weeks amid a nationwide drought and heat waves that have sent temperatures soaring across much of the country. In a statement over the weekend, Tabasco’s Civil Protection agency attributed the monkeys’ deaths to dehydration. A source from the agency told Reuters on Monday that monkeys have been confirmed dead in three municipalities of the state. Mexico’s health ministry reported a preliminary count of 26 people who have died from heat-related causes between the start of Mexico’s heat season on March 17 and May 11.
