CNN —The artistic swimming competition begins today at the Paris 2024 Olympics, with one major change compared with previous games: Men are allowed to compete for the first time. Bill May (right) has previously represented the US at the artistic swimming world championships. When artistic swimming was first added to the Olympics in 1984, only women were allowed to compete. Japan, the US, Spain and Ukraine are also named as teams to watch, while Mexico will make its artistic swimming Olympic debut. The competition will run from August 5 to August 10, with medal days on August 7 for the team competition and August 10 for the duets.

While both numbers were more than any other nation, it was a slight step back by supremely high U.S. standards. No American man had won an individual gold this meet until Finke set his world mark. “The whole ‘the men’s team hasn’t won an individual gold medal’ [narrative] was in the back of my mind,” he told reporters. The U.S. team of Ryan Murphy, Nic Fink, Caeleb Dressel and Hunter Armstrong took silver and France the bronze. “The wealth is just getting spread around, we’re not getting any worse,” said Dressel, who took home two golds and a silver from these Games.

The team has been under a cloud of suspicion since The New York Times reported in April that 23 swimmers tested positive for a banned heart drug before the 2021 Tokyo Games. The issue has also prompted a diplomatic spat between the U.S. on one side and China, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) on the other. "Chinese swimmers are clean and have never feared testing," the spokesperson said. She later celebrated her silver medal with them by running a lap of the entire arena floor carrying the country’s flag. The Olympics Have Arrived

It has been only three years since the last summer Olympics: the 2020 Tokyo Games, you’ll recall, were held in the summer of 2021. Now the Olympics return with untold opportunities to geek out on sports you haven’t thought about for several years, or ever. Broadcast coverage of the Olympics makes this transformation easy. I’m a total sucker for a hyperemotional documentary featurette on that gymnast whose family sacrificed everything for her Olympic dreams. “One of the strangest things I’ve ever seen an animal do,” Alex had told me, and I concurred.

Eleven of those Chinese swimmers are due to compete again in Paris, and many of their rivals are preparing to go against them with a sense of bitter resignation. Rob Koehler, director of international sports advocacy group Global Athlete, told CNN that they are already anticipating the worst. In a statement, WADA stood by its previous decision-making and said an independent prosecutor had confirmed that its conclusions were reasonable. He said athletes feel as though World Aquatics and the World Anti-Doping Agency have failed them and that nobody outside of the sport is paying attention. While none of those swimmers want to publicly comment on the situation ahead of the Games, Koehler believes that they will publicly protest if any one of the 11 Chinese athletes win a medal.

After hitting the pause button the United States gold medal machine was back in gear on Sunday adding seven to their total. The U.S. also won three of the six gold on offer at the canoe slalom while the other three went to Brazil. Kharlan’s disqualification threw into sharp relief the political and organizational jeopardy that France and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is facing ahead of the Games. So far, no decision has been taken on Russian and Belarusian athletes’ participation at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The opening ceremony is already uniquely French in nature with the Games set to be centered around the Seine, the river running through the city. Organizers also say that the Paris Games “finance themselves,” claiming that 96% of the budget comes from private investment. Next year’s Olympic Games are set to start on July 26 and run until August 11.

CNN —Although Michael Phelps retired seven years ago, his legacy has continued to tower over swimming. But on Saturday, Phelps’ last remaining world record was smashed by 21-year-old Leon Marchand at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukoka, Japan, as the Frenchman completed the 400 meters individual medley in 4:02.50, shaving an enormous 1.34 seconds off Phelps’ previous mark. Phelps himself had held the world record for almost 21 years, setting a series of increasingly faster times during his stint as the world’s most dominant swimmer. “I’m two seconds faster than my previous record, I beat the world record, it’s amazing… I don’t know what to say, I’m so happy.”France's Leon Marchand competes in the final of the men's 400m medley. TORONTO, Oct 29 (Reuters) - American swimmer Katie Ledecky broke the women's short-course world record in the 1,500 metre freestyle at the FINA Swimming World Cup in Toronto on Saturday, shaving nearly 10 seconds off the previous mark set by Germany's Sarah Wellbrock. "That was my first time swimming this event in a short-course pool and I didn't know what to expect," said Ledecky, who is the reigning Olympic and world long-course champion in the distance. "The record was a fantastic performance by Sarah and I was happy to have swum this fast." Wellbrock had held the previous world short-course mark of 15:18.01 since 2019. "I didn't have it as a set goal (to break the world record).
Ryan Lochte knows what it feels like to be on top: The American swimmer won his first Olympic gold medal at the 2004 Games in Athens when he was 20. Between 2004 and 2016, he collected a total of 12 Olympic medals, making him one of the world's most decorated swimmers, and earned millions along the way. Two years later, Lochte was suspended again by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for receiving an intravenous vitamin B-12 infusion. Lochte says he went from making "well over $1 million" a year to earning $75,000 from a single sponsor. The humbling experience has taught him that "money doesn't grow on trees," Lochte tells CNBC Make It.
