Protesting the world’s wrongs has been a rite of passage for generations of American youth, buoyed by our strong laws protecting free speech and free assembly. The highest calling of a university is to craft a culture of open inquiry, one where both free speech and academic freedom are held as ideals. The Constitutional right to free speech is the protection against government interference restricting speech. In the real world, though, this can get messy, and nuance is required when free speech comes into tension with protecting academic freedom. The earliest universities to adopt the principle of academic freedom did so to thwart interference and influence from totalitarian states and religious zealotry.

Market optimism is reaching a fever pitch that could be cause for concern at least over the near term, according to sentiment surveys this week. The Investors Intelligence survey, which polls market newsletter authors, showed bullishness Wednesday at 60.9% and bears at just 14.5%, according to Peter Boockvar, chief investment officer at Bleakley Financial Group. Similarly, the American Association of Individual Investors survey , which polls retail investors, indicated bullishness ahead by 45.9% to 21.9%. These surveys are useful primarily as contrarian indicators — when sentiment gets stretched in either direction, they serve as a cue for investors to move the other way. "Bottom line, in the short term this is very much worth taking note where a market rest/consolidation/digestion/correction/pullback, etc... are now more possible," he added.

CNN —Some Chinese-made cranes used at US ports contain communications equipment with no clear purpose or record of their installation, according to a new congressional investigation that will heighten US concerns that the cranes could be used for surveillance or sabotage. It comes amid heightened US-China tensions over national security and as the Coast Guard last month ordered the ports to better secure the Chinese-made cranes. The modems were found “on more than one occasion” on the ZPMC cranes, the aide said. Chinese-made cranes account for nearly 80% of the cranes used at US ports, according to the Coast Guard. Having modems embedded in cranes’ operational systems “physically bypasses” the ports’ traditional IT security defenses, Ayala told CNN.

In fact, the American Association of University Professors, with about 43,000 members, has defined and defended academic freedom since 1915. The vast majority of higher education faculty members today are in contingent appointments. They are not eligible for tenure, and so most have no protection when they are disciplined as a result of violations of academic freedom. has advocated a robust concept of academic freedom.
