Morgan Stanley highlighted several companies that are prepared to withstand — and even benefit from —consumers' shifting preferences this holiday season, as inflationary pressures dampen shoppers' budgets this quarter. According to Morgan Stanley's proprietary monthly survey, most holiday shoppers are looking to see 30% discounts, on average, before they begin spending this holiday season. A strong holiday season should benefit the entire airline industry given the ongoing demand for air travel among consumers across income brackets, according to Morgan Stanley. "Durable goods spending has slowed and that is expected to continue into the holiday season," Wilson said in the note. Toys could emerge as "relative winner" this season as they become a more top-of-mind purchase for parents during the holiday season, analyst Megan Alexander wrote.

Major U.S. and international airlines are canceling dozens of flights to Israel’s main international airport in Tel Aviv as Israeli forces continue to battle Hamas militants inside the country and launch strikes in Gaza. At least 87 flights to and from the airport were canceled on Monday, according to aviation-data service FlightAware, including all flights by American Airlines and United. The Federal Aviation Administration also urged airlines to exercise caution due to the conflict in the region.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers want major flight changes at Reagan National Airport in Virginia. Many lawmakers want to see the 1,250-mile perimeter restriction for round-trip flights relaxed. But some members of Congress argue that Reagan National is already under immense strain. But members of Congress also have a huge personal motivation for increasing the number of flights at Reagan National: the location. The prime location makes Reagan National the preferred airport for most lawmakers, but any route alterations would require changing a law which currently blocks long-haul flights of over 1,250 miles to or from the airport.

CHICAGO, April 13 (Reuters) - Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) on Thursday forecast higher-than-expected profit for the current quarter, citing "record" bookings for summer travel, even as the carrier missed first-quarter profit estimates due to higher fuel and labor costs. Rivals American Airlines and United Airlines were down about 1%. American Airlines (AAL.O) on Wednesday forecast first-quarter profit below market expectations, joining rival United Airlines (UAL.O) in signaling a hit from higher costs. U.S. carriers have tried to leverage travel demand with higher ticket prices to offset rising labor and fuel bills. For the June quarter, Delta expects its revenue to rise 15% to 17% from a year earlier on capacity growth of 17%.
CHICAGO, April 3 (Reuters) - Pilots at American Airlines (AAL.O) are "near" reaching a comprehensive agreement in principle with the company on a new contract, according to a pilot union memo seen by Reuters. American pilots, who received their last pay increase in 2019, have been protesting for a new contract. Both American Airlines and United Airlines (UAL.O) have promised an "industry-leading" contract to their pilots. "Every day that passes is a day our pilots labor under a sub-standard agreement that is problematic to both our careers and the certainty of American Airlines' operation," the APA said. American Airlines Chief Executive Robert Isom has said the company is prepared to match the pay rates and profit-sharing formula that Delta has provided in its new pilot contract.
The union representing FedEx pilots unanimously approved a strike authorization vote last week, according to a Wednesday press release. According to a statement on the FedEx pilots' website, pilot leaders allege the company has failed to "acknowledge pilot contributions." After 30 days, pilots and management could exercise self-help, which could include a union strike or a company lockout. A statement by pilot leaders says FedEx customers should plan alternative means in the event of a pilot strike. The update comes a month after the Southwest Airlines pilots' union called a vote to authorize a potential strike after souring contract negotiations.
Last week, Hilton Worldwide CEO Chris Nassetta said, "The demand trends here and now are really strong." In the home-rental space, Airbnb also said it was seeing continued strong demand at the start of 2023. China's reopening from its Covid lockdown is also helping propel travel demand, as well as the tick up in business travel, she said. "The trends have been really strong since January," he said. Airlines like Delta, American Airlines and United Airlines cited strong travel demand and higher fares for fueling their strong fourth-quarter earnings — as well as for forecasts for this year.
China's unwinding of its strict Covid-19 controls has got analysts scrambling to identify reopening beneficiaries in the stock market. But there could be another way to play the reopening, with Bank of America and UBS having identified a raft of less obvious beneficiaries outside of China. UBS' stock picks Thai hospitality group Minor International is one of UBS' top picks. Within Thailand, UBS also named rail transit operator BTS Group, expressway and metro operator Bangkok Expressway & Metro, as well as Bangkok Bank as reopening beneficiaries. Student placement provider IDP Education, as well as property groups Lendlease Group and Mirvac Group also made the UBS list.
The "agreement-in-principle," seen by Reuters, still requires final approval by the Air Line Pilots Association and its members before being implemented. In October, Delta pilots represented by the Air Line Pilots Association voted overwhelmingly to strike. According to CNBC, the new draft agreement could help drive up pilots' pay across the industry. The Air Line Pilots Association said in a memo seen by Reuters that the proposed deal represents more than $7.2 billion of cumulative value increases over the next four years. The Air Line Pilots Association did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.
Delta Air Lines and its pilots' union have reached a preliminary agreement for raises topping 30% over four years, a milestone deal that could sharply drive up aviators' pay across the industry. Delta pilots voted in October to authorize a strike if a deal wasn't reached, while pilots at several airlines have picketed this year demanding contract improvements. Delta and the union were edging toward a deal in mid-November, CNBC reported. It also includes a one-time payment of 4% of 2020 and 2021 pay each, plus 14% of 2022 pay. The Delta agreement said pay rates will exceed United's and American's pay by at least 1% over the course of the agreement, which still needs union and pilot approval.
Pilot contract negotiations with airlines turn sour

Delta Airlines pilots make their way to Terminal 4 to picket for a new contract at JFK International Airport on September 01, 2022 in New York City. The biggest airlines in the country are negotiating new pilot contracts, and talks with unions so far haven't gone well. This week alone, unions representing about 30,000 pilots combined at American Airlines and United Airlines rejected potential contracts. Meanwhile pilot unions are demanding higher pay and better schedules, on the heels of a roller coaster two years. Pilot pay varies widely based on experience and type of aircraft but senior wide-body captains at major airlines can make more than $300,000.
"The cut to oil production comes at a time when global inventories are already low and U.S. reserves are at levels not seen since the 1980s, pushing oil prices higher-for-longer," the bank's analysts wrote in an Oct. 17 note. They estimated that this could send oil prices to an average of $100 per barrel next year – 20% above consensus. Oil prices have been volatile this year, rallying following the Russia-Ukraine war before sliding on recession worries. But BofA is bullish on the sector, predicting that oil and gas stocks are set to benefit. "Sectors exposed to higher energy prices and the secondary implications are Oil & Gas, LNG, Utilities, Alt.
An American Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner approaches for a landing at the Miami International Airport on December 10, 2021 in Miami, Florida. The resumption of deliveries is long-awaited for Boeing and customers like American Airlines and United Airlines , which have gone without new Dreamliners just as travel demand surged this year. Boeing will resume deliveries of its 787 Dreamliners in the coming days, the Federal Aviation Administration said Monday. Boeing last month said it was near the finish line of resuming 787 deliveries, which CEO Dave Calhoun called "the moment we've been waiting for." "We continue to work transparently with the FAA and our customers towards resuming 787 deliveries," Boeing said in a statement.
Using credit-card points and frequent-flyer miles can be confusing. While frequent-flyer miles are less flexible than certain credit-card points, there are still great options to use them. Because of the way frequent-flyer programs work, you can usually get a lot more value from a lot fewer frequent-flyer miles than you can with credit-card points. Booking travel through your credit card using pointsOne of the easiest ways to use your bank-based credit-card points is to book travel through your credit-card company's travel portal. Bottom lineIn general, the most lucrative way to use transferable credit-card points is to convert them to frequent-flyer miles and use them to book flights.
