Economists at Bank of America warned this week that the US housing market is “stuck and we are not convinced it will become unstuck” until 2026 — or later. And mortgage rates may not fall much — even if the Federal Reserve finally delivers long-delayed interest rate cuts. There isn’t a magic fix,” Michael Gapen, head of US economics at Bank of America, told CNN in a phone interview. However, Bank of America expects housing starts — which is a measure of newly constructed homes — to remain flat for the coming years. Divide between haves and have-notsThe forecast for a “stuck” housing market cuts both ways.

Washington CNN —Nowadays, it’s anyone’s guess when the Federal Reserve will begin to cut interest rates this year — if at all. Fed officials are meeting this week, starting Tuesday, to discuss rates and set policy. That guidance will be key for market observers who clearly have divergent views on interest rates. Forecasts from major Wall Street banks on the first rate cut are all over the place: JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs expect the first cut in July, while Wells Fargo is betting on September. Some Fed policymakers, meanwhile, have even floated the possibility of a rate hike, instead of a cut.

New York CNN —Eight years ago, when North Carolina tried regulate how transgender people use public bathrooms, Corporate America revolted. Nearly two dozen states have either banned or severely curtailed abortion rights since Roe v. Wade was overturned two years ago. Lamberton: What we’ve seen is the natural life cycle of an idea. The darkened sky stretches over miles of desert sand as in the distance, from an illuminated scaffold, the object rises that will change the world. The first atomic test is the defining scene in “Oppenheimer,” which won seven Academy Awards on Sunday night, including best picture. Watching the film on opening weekend, I found the scene excruciating, even though history had long since recorded the outcome. “Oppenheimer” is a movie about a singular genius, an extraordinary collaboration and a turning point in history. An innovation designed to make the world safer in the long term made it manifestly more dangerous.

WASHINGTON (AP) — As a growing number of Republicans oppose U.S. aid to Ukraine, the Senate's leaders are arguing in strong terms that the money is crucial to pushing back against Russian President Vladimir Putin and maintaining America's global standing. In the Capitol for a rare weekend session, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky issued stark warnings about the consequences of abandoning longtime U.S. allies in Europe. “Today it’s no exaggeration to say that the eyes of the world are on the United States Senate,” McConnell said. He recounted a story he has told before about an unidentified NATO member who confronted him over his threat not to help them. Objections from Republicans adamantly opposed to the aid have delayed quick action, forcing the weekend votes as negotiations continue over potential amendments to the legislation.

The former South Carolina governor is pushing back hard against Trump’s bid to end the GOP primary race after only two nominating contests. She’s calling on voters to make a generational shift and is appealing especially to independents who can join the GOP primary in New Hampshire. According to a CNN poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire before DeSantis dropped out, Haley trailed Trump by 13 points in a two-person race. But like the late Arizona senator, Haley might still have a South Carolina problem. Even Haley’s most vehement supporter, New Hampshire GOP Gov.

Nikki Haley Mounts a Last Stand in New Hampshire

Nikki Haley finally got what she has desired since the very beginning of her campaign for the Republican presidential nomination: a one-on-one showdown with Donald Trump. Ron DeSantis of Florida ended his bid, leaving Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, as the only real threat to a third consecutive Trump nomination. Polls show Trump with a strong lead, but Haley rejected the notion that the race was over, saying “America doesn’t do coronations. A Suffolk University poll from today suggested that Trump would receive a slight increase in support in New Hampshire after the departure of DeSantis, who endorsed the former president. Trump also garnered the endorsement of two South Carolina politicians: Senator Tim Scott, a former Haley ally, as well as Representative Nancy Mace, whom Haley endorsed for Congress and whom Trump attempted to unseat in 2022.

Nickel is a central component of the transition away from fossil fuels, making access to Indonesia’s stocks an objective of greatest urgency. “It’s frustrating.”Money and PowerAt 76, Mr. Luhut remains wiry, spry and prone to nationalist pique. He vehemently rejects the notion that Indonesia — a country of nearly 280 million people — must pick a side or imperil its business with the United States. The animosity between the United States and China was not the only issue causing him angst. Since the ban was introduced in 2014, Indonesia’s exports of nickel products have multiplied more than tenfold, exceeding $30 billion last year, according to government data.

Why, when we think of climate change, do we think of big oil, not big ag; Exxon and not Tyson? It’s time you met the big ag lobby, one of the most powerful influences on policy in America. But when we started digging into the big ag lobby, we discovered it’s basically — “The most powerful lobby on Capitol Hill. So the big ag lobby has one key aim — block environmental regulation. I absolutely envy how good these lobbyists are at their job.” It’s outrageous what the big ag lobby has gotten away with.

I know all too well how some Americans feel about immigrants: I was undocumented for 25 years, and I am a child of immigrants who remain undocumented. I also wrote a book about the daily lives of migrants during the Trump years. At the time, the Trump administration seemed to be the worst possible administration for immigrants and their advocates. All the while, Republicans have been steadily marching toward authoritarianism, book ban by book ban and voter suppression tactic by voter suppression tactic. I was a child in Ecuador in the 1990s, a time when Latin America was reeling from the effects of decades of coups, dictatorships and political repression.
Footage of an axe attack carried out in 2017 by a transgender woman in Sydney, Australia, is being shared online alongside a false claim that it took place in the United States in 2023. One Facebook user uploaded a version of the video (here) alongside the caption: “Transgender in 7-11 let’s (sic) loose on two customers with an ax (sic). The assailant then hits another woman in the back of the head with the axe as she walks out of the shop. Things have been difficult for her family, she says, but one thing she isn’t worried about: a midlife crisis, looming just over the horizon. One of our questions was about whether they had experienced a midlife crisis and how they would define the term. Many people said they felt they couldn’t be having a midlife crisis, because there was no bourgeois numbness to rebel against. “Who has midlife crisis money?”The traditional midlife crisis, as presented in popular culture, at least, unfolds amid suburban ennui. We just increase our Lexapro.”Was the midlife crisis ever even real?
But If you’re wondering why America’s labor shortage persists nearly three years into the Covid pandemic, it’s in part because America doesn’t have enough immigrants. Immigrants are vital to the US economy and fill thousands of US jobs – jobs many Americas don’t want to do. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said that in addition to an aging workforce there is a lack of foreign labor contributing to labor shortages. Those types of industries had higher rates of unfilled jobs last year – adding to existing labor shortages, according to UC Davis research. “The farm labor crisis is hindering production and contributing to food price inflation.
The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America doesn’t support same-sex marriage. It demonstrates that the American model of representative democracy — though riddled with divisions — can still address complex contemporary issues. This victory was achieved because the Respect for Marriage Act also includes important principles of religious freedom for those who don’t endorse same-sex marriage itself. On the right, criticism has largely centered on calling for even stronger religious freedom amendments or strenuously objecting to the inclusion of same-sex marriage in any federally codified definition of marriage. But over time, the model of political pluralism embodied in the Respect for Marriage Act can help renew national trust.
Trump’s post came after Twitter CEO Elon Musk promoted a series of tweets Friday revealing internal documents about how the company handled a New York Post article about Hunter Biden in 2020. While he said he “vehemently disagrees” with the former president’s statement, Turner did not directly answer the question, even after host Margaret Brennan pressed repeatedly. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., a vocal opponent of Trump who serves on the House Jan. 6 committee, called Trump's statement “insane." Meanwhile, Democrats swiftly rebuked Trump’s statement shortly after it was posted. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said he “vociferously” condemns Trump’s remarks and urged his colleagues on both sides of the aisle to do the same.
Why America Doesn’t Have Enough EV Charging Stations

One of the biggest roadblocks to the mass adoption of electric vehicles is the troubled business model for the commercial chargers that power them. The government is pouring billions of dollars into developing a national highway charging network. But businesses aren’t sure how they will make money, and the nascent industry looks messy.
New York CNN Business —The Federal Reserve’s fight to squash inflation will cause the US economy to start losing tens of thousands of jobs a month beginning early next year, Bank of America warns. ‘Mild’ recessionSome forecasters are more bullish on the state of the jobs market. The Conference Board said Monday its employment trend index, a combination of leading job market indicators, ticked up last month. Bank of America expects the unemployment rate will top out at 5.5% next year, well below the peak of nearly 15% in April 2020. “Although nobody wants to be callous about someone losing their job,” Gapen said, “this could be classified as a mild recession.”
