New York CNN —DirecTV announced Monday it’s buying rival Dish Network, ending multiple decades of on-and-off talks about the satellite services merging. The agreement provides DirecTV and Dish with greater scale, a DirecTV spokesperson told CNN. The newly merged DirecTV-Dish entity will continue to support the Dish brand for the foreseeable future, the DirecTV spokesperson said. DirecTV does not currently have plans to make changes to the existing Dish or Sling TV brands, meaning that current Dish customers should not be concerned about being forced over to DirecTV. The deal also strengthens the duo’s foothold in the industry, allowing them to more easily compete with pay TV rivals and streaming services.

Amazon’s election coverage plan engendered lots of TV industry chatter when it was first reported by Puck and Variety over the weekend. The notion of a Big Tech heavyweight distributing its own election night TV show would have been hard to imagine a decade ago. Williams, 65, is a product of broadcast TV who led NBC’s election night coverage in 2008 and 2012. The Amazon election event – which has yet to be named – will be his first major project since signing off MSNBC three years ago. If election night morphs into something like election week, as it did in 2020, it remains to be determined whether Amazon’s live coverage would continue.

CNN —NBCUniversal’s high-stakes decision to exclusively air the NFL’s AFC Wild Card playoff game between the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs on its streaming service Peacock drove record signups to the platform, a digital analytics firm said Wednesday. In the three days leading up to the January 13 kickoff in Kansas City, Peacock saw 2.8 million sign-ups, Antenna reported on Wednesday, citing preliminary data. Prior to the game, Peacock reached roughly 30 million subscribers, a significantly smaller number than CNN parent company Warner Bros. Discovery’s 95 million Max subscribers and Netflix’s 260 million global subscribers. Though it remains unclear just how many of the 2.8 million new subscribers will retain their Peacock service beyond the playoff game, the announcement comes as other streamers also appear to be getting serious about sports. Retail sales, which are adjusted for seasonal swings but not inflation, rose 0.6% in August, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. Excluding sales at gasoline stations, retail spending advanced a more modest 0.2% in August from July. Retail spending increased across most categories, including at restaurants and grocery stores. It’s the strongest monthly spending gain since January; however, underlying data indicates this type of activity may be on borrowed time. The Personal Consumption Expenditures index showed that prices increased 0.2% on a monthly basis and 3.3% annually. Economists were expecting monthly increases of 0.2% for the headline and core indexes and 3.3% and 4.2%, respectively, for the annual numbers. Even when adjusted for inflation, spending surged in July, rising by 0.6% from the month before.

Consumers spent $12.7 billion across the web on July 11 and 12 during Amazon’s Prime Day sales, a 6.1% jump from a year ago, according to Adobe Analytics. Amazon said July 11 was the single largest sales day in the company’s history, but declined to provide totals. “Prime Day has become of one the biggest e-commerce moments of the year, as consumers latch onto major discounts from a number of different retailers,” said Vivek Pandya, lead analyst at Adobe Digital Insights. Amazon holds Prime Day in July every year to juice sales numbers during what are typically slow summer months. Since Prime Day began in 2015, other chains, like Walmart with its Walmart+ week and Best Buy with “Black Friday in July,” have also jumped in to capture shoppers’ spending during slow summer months.

New York CNN —Amazon Prime Day is back again starting Tuesday. “Step Aside Black Friday - Meet Prime Day,” Amazon (AMZN) said in a press release unveiling the sale. Prime Day helps Amazon draw new members to Amazon Prime, its $139 annual free-shipping program, and bolsters existing customer relationships with the company’s products and businesses, which includes Whole Foods. The vast majority of the company’s offerings on Prime Day in the past are exclusive to Prime members. This will be the first Prime Day with Amazon’s revamped delivery network.
