Over the past few months, I've applied to five fast food jobs: Crumbl Cookies, McDonald's, Wendy's, Hardee's, and Waffle House. Unfortunately, the jobs that made me apply with AI chatbots left me annoyed and uncertain. The automated application process at Crumbl Cookies seems short, but it wasn't easyI applied to be a baker at Crumbl Cookies. McDonald's uses AI chatbots to automate its hiring process, but it made things more complicatedI applied to McDonald's and answered the questions the chatbot named Olivia asked me. To be fair, AI chatbots can make it easier to screen applicants and schedule interviews.

Amanda Claypool got a part-time job at Waffle House for $2.92 an hour. I worked at Waffle House for almost 3 monthsI actually liked working at Waffle House. Either way, Waffle House is only legally required to make sure I earn $7.25 per hour. I used the cash tips I earned from Waffle House — around $500 — to make a payment on my credit card. Even if Waffle House wanted to offer higher wages, I'm not sure they'd be able to raise their menu prices to compensate for it.
I'm Diamond Naga Siu, and in this turbulent economy, I definitely want stability over most other things. And my colleague Grace Mayer highlights how retail, finance, and other (seemingly more stable) industries are piquing our interest instead. A leaked document viewed by Insider revealed that Amazon wants to focus on entertainment features for Alexa. The upgrade will feature Amazon's own generative AI technology instead of using OpenAI's technology (like how Microsoft paired ChatGPT with Bing). Bell dished to my colleague Ashley Stewart on why he made the move, how he met Satya Nadella, and more.
Amanda Claypool started working at Waffle House once a week to try and understand the labor shortage. She enjoys working at Waffle House, but says she's glad it isn't the source of her livelihood. When I'm not at Waffle House I'm a freelance writer and strategy consultant. After searching for a couple months, Waffle House gave me a chance, and I started working there once a week. The money isn't much, but what's shocked me the most about serving at Waffle House isn't the pay — it's the cost of employment itself.
