Mr. Stanbro, however, was accused of assault and after he left the hospital was put in solitary confinement. At Clinton Correctional Facility, near the Canadian border, guards kicked and punched a handcuffed man, breaking his rib. In all three cases, the staff members filed false reports to cover up the assaults, court records show, and faced no discipline. The Marshall Project obtained disciplinary data on more than 290 cases in which the corrections department tried to fire guards or supervisors accused of abusing prisoners. In nearly three-quarters of those cases, the agency also accused the officers of covering up misconduct, often by acting in concert.

An officer who broke his baton hitting a prisoner 35 times, even after the man was handcuffed, was not fired. In dozens of documented cases involving severe injuries of prisoners, including three deaths, the agency did not even try to discipline officers, state records show. The records probably reflect only a fraction of the violence guards have inflicted in New York’s corrections system, experts said. These records do not detail prisoner attacks on officers, which the department and the guards’ union said have increased in recent years. A key reason the prison system finds it so hard to get rid of guards is the contract the state signed in 1972 with the union.

Goucher's book also describes a persistently sexist culture at the Nike Oregon Project and says that Alberto Salazar, a celebrated distance runner and former Nike coach, sexually assaulted her. "My story helped sell shoes, shorts, T-shirts, and bras," Goucher wrote of her time as a Nike-backed runner. "In 2018 we standardized our approach across all sports to support all of our female athletes during pregnancy," Nike said in the statement. We know that Nike can continue to play an elevated role in supporting female athletes and improving their experience in sports."

Remains found last week have been identified as those of a missing 4-year-old Oklahoma girl, authorities said Thursday. The state bureau said Thursday that the Oklahoma Office of Chief Medical Examiner positively identified the remains as Athena. The search for a missing 4-year-old girl in Oklahoma, who authorities believe was killed by her caregiver, has turned into a "recovery operation" to find her remains, officials said Monday. The announcement from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation came after the couple who had been taking care of Athena Brownfield were charged in connection with her disappearance. Highway Patrol, troopers search a pond near Cyril, Okla., on Jan. 11, 2023, for Athena Brownfield, a 4-year-old girl missing since Jan. 10. CNN —Celebrity personal trainer Eric Fleishman has died at the age of 53. The fitness personality, known as “Eric the Trainer,” died suddenly at his home in Glendale, California on Thanksgiving, his family announced Sunday in a post shared on his verified Instagram page. “We are heartbroken to share that Eric Phillip Fleishman passed away unexpectedly on the morning of November 24, 2022. Fleishman made a name for himself by training a slew of celebrity clients. Eric made such an impact on my life and I don’t think he even knew it.
