Former President Donald Trump appears in Manhattan Criminal Court, Thursday, May 30, 2024, in New York. A New York jury on Thursday found former President Donald Trump guilty of all 34 felony charges of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels by his then-personal lawyer before the 2016 election. Trump is the first former U.S. president to be found guilty of any crime. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr., whose office is prosecuting Trump, entered the courtroom after the note was sent out. Cohen testified during the trial that Trump directed him to pay off Daniels before the 2016 election to prevent her story from damaging his presidential campaign.

The Republican-led House Judiciary Committee opened an investigation into the work of the Atlanta prosecutor who has criminally charged Donald Trump and others with interfering in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. Trump is due to surrender at an Atlanta jail on Thursday evening to be booked in the case. Eighteen other people, including lawyers who promoted false claims about the 2020 election, also were indicted in the case. Traditionally, the committee's jurisdiction is limited to oversight of federal courts and federal officials. The House Judiciary Committee earlier this year demanded similar information from the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr., who is prosecuting Trump in another criminal case.

New York City teachers say children are increasingly coming to school high, per The New York Times. But the proliferation of unlicensed smoke shops has become a major issue among city officials. Gale Brewer, a New York City council member, pointed to the growing number of unregulated vape shops in the city — using her own Upper West Side district as a barometer. New York City Eric Adams has pledged to go after unlicensed smoke shops, but he has not yet taken broad steps do so, per The Times. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr. has also taken a firm stance against unlicensed shops by floating evictions, but his office has not yet gone through with such actions.
State attorneys and former prosecutors worried that Trump's indictment would solely revolve around Michael Cohen as a witness. But Trump's indictment depends on more than Cohen — the NY DA alleges Trump paid off another woman, too. Mark Bederow, a former prosecutor, previously told Insider that resting an indictment of this caliber solely on Cohen would be disastrous. "You wouldn't rely on Michael Cohen to tell you the time of day unless you corroborated it with a clock. Like Daniels, prosecutors allege that Trump, Pecker, and Cohen teamed up to silence former Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal in June 2016.
Ron DeSantis spoke to a crowd Saturday about former President Donald Trump's indictment. He also appeared to use the speech as an opportunity to criticize Trump — though again without naming him. Ron DeSantis used a Saturday stop in Long Island to stick up for former President Donald Trump following his indictment, but the Florida politician avoided using Trump's name in the nearly hour-long speech. Following his indictment, Trump's popularity over DeSantis has grown, according to a Yahoo News/YouGov poll in which Trump beat DeSantis by 26 percentage points among registered Republican voters and Independents who lean Republican. Representatives for Trump and DeSantis did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
Trump's legal team is looking to move the New York criminal inquiry from Manhattan to Staten Island, per Bloomberg. Trump's team has not yet made a decision, as they're looking to review the indictment next week. Manhattan is one of the bluest jurisdictions in the country, while Staten Island leans Republican. Staten Island, also known as Richmond County, has long been the most conservative of New York City's five boroughs. In 2020, Trump won Staten Island by a 57% to 42% margin over Biden.
Trump has previously indicated that he wouldn't leave the 2024 presidential race if he was indicted. Among the bold-named Texas figures who have signed on to Trump's 2024 campaign are Lt. Gov. Greg Abbott, who has been floated as a potential 2024 presidential candidate, was also not on the list. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas won his home state in the 2016 Republican presidential primary. Cruz took home the lion's share of Texas' GOP delegates in what is a winner-takes-most system.
Former President Trump remains at the top of the 2024 GOP pack as he faces several criminal probes. Brandon Bell/Getty ImagesTrump versus the worldDuring the 2016 GOP presidential primaries, Trump's political brand was built on rejecting the political establishment. Ron DeSantis of Florida is among several high-profile Republicans who may challenge Trump for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. In 2020, Trump faced near-unanimous support for a second term, with the campaigns of former Rep. Mark Sanford of South Carolina, former Gov.
Traffic was heavy around a Manhattan courthouse Tuesday amid preparations for a potential indictment of Donald Trump. The Manhattan grand jury investigating Donald Trump’s role in a hush-money payment to a porn star is set to meet Wednesday as it comes closer to voting on a potential indictment of the former president. The grand jury’s activities have been closely watched as the hush-money investigation into Mr. Trump, run by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr., nears its end. On Wednesday, jurors could hear from additional witnesses or prosecutors could formally present charges, which is the final step before the jurors vote whether to indict.
New York prosecutors investigating Trump feared they would have to prove that he was not "legally insane." "To rebut the claim that Trump believed his own 'hype,' we would have to show, and stress, that Donald Trump was not legally insane," lawyer Mark Pomerantz writes in the memoir, seen by The Daily Beast. "Was Donald Trump suffering from some sort of mental condition that made it impossible for him to distinguish between fact and fiction?" The Daily Beast received an advance copy of the book "People vs. Donald Trump: An Inside Account," which is due to be released on Tuesday. A lawyer for Trump recently sent Pomerantz a letter threatening legal action over the book, according to The New York Times.
Two subsidiaries of the Trump Organization were convicted Tuesday by a jury in New York City of multiple crimes, including tax fraud, falsifying business records and conspiracy. The guilty verdicts on all 17 charged counts come three weeks after the company's owner, Republican former President Donald Trump, declared his candidacy for the White House in the 2024 election. But Trump "knew exactly what was going on," a prosecutor said in closing arguments last week in Manhattan Supreme Court. Defense lawyers had argued that Weisselberg — who earlier pleaded guilty to 15 felony charges — was solely responsible for the scheme, not the Trump Organization. The guilty verdicts also could harm the firm's ability to obtain loans for its various real estate holdings and other business ventures,
