We asked seven pro investors to identify the best trades of their careers and explain how the lessons from those decisions still apply today. The CBOE Volatility Index, also known as the VIX, shot above 40, essentially meaning traders were betting that the stock market would be exceptionally rocky over the following month. "I pretty much expected, 'OK, if I get a double out of this in five years, I'll be happy' — that's pretty decent money," Muhlenkamp said. He noted that industrials within the Russell Mid Cap value index have returned 116% over the previous five years.

Expect to work a little harder for those fixed income returns in the new year. As a result, it may be time to start unwinding those big cash positions and adopt a longer-term mentality for fixed income investments. A runup in bond yields is accompanied by a decline in prices, and the two move inversely to one another. The sector "remains well positioned to maintain its high credit quality, driven by solid state credit quality and strong state financial support, despite soft enrollment trends," analyst Kathleen McNamara wrote last week. Consider dollar cost averaging into those longer-dated positions, incrementally building up exposure to intermediate duration bonds.

Last month, bond yields made a comeback and the 10-year Treasury note hit roughly 5%, the highest since 2007. On the other end, bond risk comes from the borrower's ability to pay back their obligation. For investors who want higher income, Bory recommends considering a mutual fund or a commingled fund that provides that diversification. Popular examples of corporate bond funds include the MainStay MacKay High Yield Corporate Bond Fund (MHCAX), Goldman Sachs High Yield Fund (GSHIX), and High Yield Spectrum Fund (PHSIX). Below is a list of Morningstar analysts' favorite high-yield bond funds that have the highest "Gold Medalist" rating.

Bank stocks are at an all-time low compared with the S&P 500 based on relative prices, according to data from BofA Global Research. One key factor for bank stocks is whether the Federal Reserve is close to wrapping up a monetary tightening cycle that has brought the highest U.S. interest rates in decades. Yet signs the Fed may keep rates around current levels through most of next year have weighed on bank stocks. This month, analysts at BofA Global Research said investors should “selectively” add exposure to bank stocks in anticipation of an interest rate peak. Overall, about 61% of all outstanding mortgages have an interest rate below 4%, according to the Apollo Group, leaving consumers little incentive to refinance or move.

Plenty of bond investors have been burned calling a bottom in a selloff that has taken Treasuries to the cusp of an unprecedented third straight year of losses. One potential near-term pitfall is Friday’s U.S. payrolls data, which could revive expectations of Fed hawkishness if they come in stronger than expected. The rise in Treasury yields has reached far beyond the bond market. The S&P 500 is down nearly 8% from its July high, as rising bond yields offer investment competition to equities while threatening to raise the cost of capital for companies. “The market is running with the idea that the Fed is done hiking, which they may or may not be,” he said.

Surging bond yields and mixed earnings reports have weighed on the so-called Magnificent Seven stocks, which are collectively down an average of about 15% from their 52-week highs, though they all still sit on hefty gains for the year. The stocks now trade at an average forward price-to-earnings ratio of about 30 times compared with 45 times in mid-June. I actually think the Magnificent Seven will hold up better,” said King Lip, chief strategist at Baker Avenue Wealth Management. Because the Magnificent Seven have a combined weighting of 28% in the S&P 500, their performance holds a large sway over the broader index. Lip said his firm owns shares of all seven companies and has recently added to its holdings in some of them.

For every two U.S. consumer staples stocks that hedge funds have shorted, they have bought one, Goldman Sachs said. U.S. companies ranging from supermarkets to beer have been under pressure on concerns about the impact of weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro. Shares in the U.S. consumer staples sector (.SPLRCS) are down roughly 8% this year, which some investors see as an overreaction to the new weight-loss drugs. "Consumer staples has been ignored and beaten up," said Bryant VanCronkhite, equities senior portfolio manager at Allspring Global Investments LLC. LONDON (Reuters) - The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield briefly reached 5% for the first time since 2007, marking a fresh milestone in a relentless push higher for government borrowing costs. He highlighted what everyone has seen with the strong economic growth data and the retail sales figure that came out. Just like how the market forced the Fed to stop quantitative tightening in 2019, it might be forcing the Fed to rethink QT today.

The surprisingly strong economy has led investors to worry that the Fed will keep rates higher for longer, which, in turn, drove US Treasury yields higher. As stocks have declined and bond yields have soared, bond prices have tanked, causing pain for investors who bet that the Fed would curtail its rate-hiking campaign earlier this year. Treasury yields rose to their highest level in over a decade earlier this week, before edging lower on a cooldown in employment data on Wednesday. Bond prices cratered in 2022 after the Fed began drastically raising near-zero rates to tame runaway inflation. US Treasury bond prices jumped earlier this year after the collapse of several regional lenders led traders to bet that the Fed would soon ease its aggressive pace of interest rate hikes.

Matt Orton, chief market strategist at Raymond James Investment Management, was the latest to urge investors to "strategically add" to small-cap stocks right now. Tom Ognar, senior portfolio manager at Allspring Global Investments, said small- and mid-cap stocks look the "most incrementally interesting" among growth stocks. "We're very attuned to the valuation discounts currently being afforded to small- and mid-cap stocks after protracted periods of underperformance relative to large-cap stocks," he said. It screened for the best small-cap stocks to play an economic recovery. RBC Capital Markets also released, in a September note, an updated list of what it called "high conviction" U.S. small-cap growth recommendations.

Many view healthcare as a defensive sector because it has constant demand and is somewhat insulated from the economy. In the latest week, investors pulled a net $1.4 billion from the sector, the biggest weekly outflow since May 2022. Overall, the healthcare sector - which ranges from health insurers like UnitedHealth to pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer to small biotechs - has received the third largest inflows of any sector year to date, BofA's data showed. This would weaken the case for loading up on healthcare stocks. Overall, healthcare sector earnings are expected to lag this year as COVID-related revenues decline 13% versus a 1.8% rise for the overall S&P 500.

Investors are also closely watching the path of Treasury yields, which rattled equity markets in recent days by rising to fresh year highs. The S&P 500 fell 2.27% this week, its biggest weekly decline since March 10. Janasiewicz of Natixis said a stronger-than-expected consumer price reading next week could spark a decline of up to 5% in the S&P 500. A stronger-than-expected inflation number next week could also boost Treasury yields further. Rising yields on Treasuries, viewed as among the world's safest investments because they are backed by the U.S. government, can dull the allure of stocks.
