Six years ago, Illinois farmer John Ackerman didn't hire any contract workers at all. He enjoys mentoring young people, but says it's felt harder lately to justify hiring inexperienced workers when contract workers do the same hard, physical jobs faster and better. Climate change affects all farm workers, but advocates and researchers say this is a reason to focus particularly on these workers. The USDA data showed an uptick in the number of farms using migrant labor, both within farms that already hired contract workers and overall. He’s tried reaching out H-2A workers on nearby farms, but says their supervisors won’t let them talk to him.

Universitario claimed a record-extending 27th league title after a 2-0 win at city rivals Alianza on Wednesday had wrapped up a 3-1 aggregate victory. But before the celebrations could get underway the lights went out at the Alejandro Villanueva stadium, an incident Universitario labelled both disgraceful and dangerous. The club added that the award ceremony will be held at their home Monumental U stadium on Sunday. Universitario later poked fun at their rivals' move on social media and issued a reminder about the league title count. "Say goodbye to unforeseen events, don't be left without electricity in the middle of your celebrations," the club wrote.

Vox’s bombastic rhetoric and toxic policies pose a serious threat to Spanish democracy — but not as existential a threat as many presume it to be. Vox’s emergence — however eye-catching — did not signal any significant shift for the Spanish right and politics in Spain. Contrary to common wisdom, the far right did not disappear with Franco’s death. Lately, encouraged by the surge of right-wing, populist parties all over the world, Spain’s far right decided that it is safe to come out of hiding. Yet Spanish democracy, served by steady leadership, social and economic advances and a lively multiparty political culture, has held firm.

At least nine people have died in a stampede at a soccer stadium in El Salvador on Saturday, the authorities said, in a chaotic scene that left other fans injured and at least two hospitalized in critical condition. Videos circulating on Twitter and published by local news sites showed dozens of people clad in white appearing to rush toward an exit at the stadium, with some lying on the ground as more pile on top. It was not immediately clear what prompted the rush at Cuscatlán Stadium in San Salvador, El Salvador, where the first-league soccer teams, Alianza and FAS, were playing the second leg of a quarterfinal. On a livestream of the match that was posted on YouTube, game commentators said they could see some type of commotion going on in the stands, noting that some people appeared to be passed out. Fans eventually stepped onto the field, and the game was halted, the commentators said in the livestream.
Ron DeSantis on Thursday over his flights of migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, in September. Carlin Stiehl / The Boston Globe via Getty Images fileThis is only the most recent lawsuit filed against DeSantis over the flights. DeSantis' immigration move escalated a tactic first used by Texas Gov. “Obviously, it’s sad that Martha’s Vineyard people deported them the next day, DeSantis said of the migrants he sent to Massachusetts in September.
MIAMI — Florida Democrats are reeling and coming to terms with devastating Election Day losses, particularly among Latino voters who turned out solidly for Republicans in statewide contests. Most Republicans running in the state won by large margins, turning Florida into a solid red state. “Republicans became the real spokespeople for this community,” said Gamarra, referring to the governor, senators, and South Florida members of Congress. DeSantis always hammers down the message that Florida is a “free state.” Over 80,000 people have died of Covid in Florida. Meanwhile, the number of Democratic Latino registered voters decreased from 947,853 in 2020 to 901,481 in 2022.
Ron DeSantis flew to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, in a political stunt. Our organization is a network of groups that help immigrants achieve a sustainable way of life throughout the Americas. Ultimately, the Martha’s Vineyard case is an opportunity to reflect on how we can do better, honoring the critical role migrants play in bettering our nation. Overall, our immigration laws are obsolete and impractical. The Martha’s Vineyard lawsuit is a chance for us to revisit the conversation about whether we are truly prepared to honor our promise of being a country that welcomes immigrants.
IHC's bid is the latest in a long-running saga of moves to snap up stakes in GEA companies. Shares in investment holding company Grupo SURA (SIS.CN), the jewel in GEA's crown which owns the largest stake in Nutresa, rose almost 7% in the morning session. IHC is a partner of the Gilinski Group, stockbrokers told Reuters. If the latest bid is successful, Grupo Gilinski will become Nutresa's largest shareholder. Gilinski Group also secured a 38% stake in Grupo SURA following several bids and transactions last year.
Migrants who were flown from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, under a new program by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sued DeSantis, a Republican, and other state officials Tuesday, alleging they were victims of fraud for political purposes. Taryn Fenske, a spokesperson for DeSantis, said in a statement that the migrants chose to board the flights. "The transportation of the immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard was done on a voluntary basis," Fenske said. DeSantis has insisted that no laws were broken, and he has pledged to continue his administration’s $12 million program to relocate migrants.

Woody Allen has announced his retirement from filmmaking. While in Europe to work on his 50th film, Woody Allen told Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia that he intended to retire from making movies and to dedicate more time to writing during his twilight years. What is now set to be his final film is set in Paris and will be shot entirely in French in a couple of weeks. Allen has been shooting more often in Europe as his support in the U.S. has plunged given the abuse accusations against him. In 2020, he opened the San Sebastian Film Festival with “Rifkin’s Festival,” shot in and around the tony city of San Sebastian.
