Netanyahu's trip to New York was designed to "trick" Hassan Nasrallah, an Israeli official has said.
Nasrallah, who was the leader of Hezbollah, was killed following an Israeli strike on Beirut on Friday.
The "diversionary plan" aimed to make Nasrallah think Israel would not carry out significant military action with Netanyahu away.
The Israel Defense Forces said on Saturday that Nasrallah, who had led Hezbollah since 1992, had been killed in a strike on Beirut on Friday.
During his UN address, Netanyahu said that Israel would "continue degrading Hezbollah until all our objectives are met."
