MANCHESTER, N.H.—Fresh off a record-setting victory in Iowa, Donald Trump shifted attention to his next target in the GOP nomination hunt: a New Hampshire primary that Nikki Haley hopes will stall the front-runner’s momentum. Haley was edged out for second place in Iowa by Ron DeSantis, who once predicted he would win there. She is seen as stronger in New Hampshire and will seek to tap in to this state’s more-centrist electorate in the Jan. 23 primary. Her argument: Trump did a good job as president, but the controversies that surround him hurt the GOP’s chances of defeating President Biden in November.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa—Donald Trump was expected to win the Iowa caucuses Monday night by the largest margin in the history of the first Republican presidential nominating contest, cementing an early victory in his defiant bid to return to the White House. The anticipated dominance of the former president in Iowa, based on recent polls, heightened the importance of second place. Nikki Haley appeared to have a chance to beat Ron DeSantis in a close race for that spot, a prize that would fuel her quest to become the only Trump alternative and a long-shot challenger to the front-runner.

AMES, Iowa—Ron DeSantis says he will never back down. The next three days will test that confidence. Needing a strong performance in Monday’s Iowa caucuses, the first nominating contest of the 2024 Republican presidential primary race, the Florida governor has made the state his beachhead—even if his goal is to come in second place behind Donald Trump.

How Ron DeSantis Lost Florida to Donald Trump

A number of Florida insiders, including some who back Ron DeSantis, are questioning the Florida governor’s presidential bid. Photo: Joe Raedle/Getty ImagesKISSIMMEE, Fla.—Ron DeSantis has been trying to persuade voters in Iowa and New Hampshire to back his presidential bid, but he has failed to make the case in his own state of Florida. From polls to interviews with party activists and elected officials across the state, there are abundant signs Donald Trump would trounce the sitting governor in Florida among Republican voters—if DeSantis even makes it to the March 19 primary.

Jenna Ellis, a lawyer who advised Donald Trump during his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss, pleaded guilty in the Georgia election interference case on Tuesday. Photo: John Bazemore/AFP/Getty ImagesWASHINGTON—Donald Trump has had a tough few days on the legal front, his defense effort buffeted by one blow after another from once-loyal aides. The former president was fined a second time on Wednesday for violating a gag order in a civil-fraud trial where his scorned ex-confidant Michael Cohen said Trump commanded him to “reverse engineer” estimates of his financial wealth. A day earlier it emerged that former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows , once one of Trump’s closest advisers, had been talking to federal prosecutors about the effort to overturn the 2020 election. And the same day a third Trump legal adviser, Jenna Ellis , pleaded guilty in Fulton County, Ga., where Trump is the prime defendant in a racketeering case on similar allegations.

Former President Donald Trump is facing four separate indictments at both state and federal levels. WSJ breaks down each of the indictments and what they mean for his 2024 presidential campaign. Photo Illustration: Annie ZhaoDERRY, N.H.—Donald Trump has attacked judges and prosecutors as “thugs” and psychopaths, called for shoplifters to be shot, suggested now-retired Gen. Mark Milley could be executed for treason, and joked about last year’s violent assault of Rep. Nancy Pelosi’s (D., Calif.) husband. All the while, the former president has riled up supporters who largely think Trump is being persecuted. “The silent majority can no longer remain silent,” read a recent fundraising email.
