CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago will again extend its 60-day limit on shelter stays for asylum seekers, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced, just days ahead of a deadline that could have evicted nearly 2,000 migrants. Chicago and other U.S. cities, including New York and Denver, have put shelter limits in place as they struggle to house and care for the growing population of migrants arriving by bus and plane. Extensions will be based on migrants' original dates to exit the system and will be either 30 or 60 days, city officials said. For example, nearly 2,000 people who were set to leave on Thursday will now get another 60 days. Any migrants newly entering shelters will get the standard 60 days.

A plan for a "mega" Chick-fil-A store in Tennessee is the latest project to encounter backlash from locals concerned about the fast-food chain's frequently crowded drive-thrus lines. In Collierville, Tennessee, Chick-fil-A has proposed replacing a 23-year-old 3,950-square-foot restaurant with a larger one to accommodate the growing consumer demand. Chain reps are billing the proposed 6,110-square-foot restaurant as the "latest greatest prototype Chick-fil-A has" in its system. Chick-fil-A said the bigger restaurant, proposed for an empty lot about a half-mile down the road, is expected to contain cars within two double drive-thru lanes that wrap the restaurant. It also has plans to build an elevated restaurant that has four drive-thru lanes that flow below the store.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A former St. Louis alderman indicted in a fraud case was charged with lying to police about getting carjacked last year, authorities said. Charging documents say there was no evidence of an attempted carjacking and that several parts of Bosley's story did not line up with what investigators found, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Officers spoke with Bosley and the woman on Dec. 22, according to court documents, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. CHICAGO (AP) — As the first blast of wintry weather hit Chicago, dozens of migrant families without a place to live were moved off snowy city streets and into the basement of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in a nearby suburb. The last-minute, temporary solution around 1 a.m. Wednesday, coordinated by volunteers and suburban Oak Park officials, came as Chicago has struggled to house the growing population of asylum-seekers ahead of the deep winter months. City officials have been scouting locations for winterized tents, but City Council members have criticized Johnson's administration for a lack of details. This week, the city publicized its winter efforts, including providing 16 “warming buses” at police stations during overnight hours, and winter coats for new arrivals. Last month, the city touted its partnerships with several outside organizations to provide food, clothing and hygiene items.

Gino DiGiovanni Jr., a member of the local board of aldermen, beat Mayor Richard Dziekan by just 10 votes — 202 to 192 — which triggered an automatic recount, set for noon on Friday. DERBY, Conn. (AP) — A Republican primary between the incumbent mayor of Connecticut’s smallest city and an alderman facing criminal charges that he entered the U.S. Capitol with a mob of rioters appeared Tuesday to be headed for a recount. Final unofficial results showed a tight contest in the race in Derby, a city of 12,400 people about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northeast of New York City. Races decided by less than 20 votes trigger an automatic recount. Town Clerk Marc J. Garofalo said on Facebook a recount in this race will likely be held Friday. Regardless of the final Republican primary results, Dziekan has said he will appear on the November ballot as a non-affiliated candidate.

Chicago government-worker pensions are massively under-funded. So in typical Chicago-land fashion, the City Council is betting on casino revenue to plug the pension gap. Do taxpayers and workers feel lucky? City aldermen last month approved a $1.7 billion casino and entertainment complex by Bally’s Corp. that will supposedly generate $200 million annually in tax revenue for the city police and firefighter pension funds—assuming financial forecasts prove accurate. Remember, this is Chicago.

WASHINGTON — An elected official in Connecticut has admitted for the first time publicly that he entered the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot. "I was there I went inside there, and, you know, I didn’t damage or break anything," DiGiovanni told NBC Connecticut following a recent Board of Aldermen meeting. That footage also indicated he entered the Capitol near where some of the most brutal violence took place. Nearly 900 people have been arrested in connection with the Jan. 6 attack, but there are still hundreds more arrests expected. DiGiovanni was elected to local office in Derby, a small city near New Haven, about 10 months after the Jan. 6 attack.
