Harvard University said on Friday that its interim president, Alan M. Garber, would lead the university through the 2026-27 academic year, offering a dose of stability to a campus rocked by turmoil. Dr. Garber took over at Harvard in January when Claudine Gay resigned after weeks of criticism over her testimony at a congressional hearing about antisemitism on campus and accusations of plagiarism in her academic writings. Penny Pritzker, senior fellow of the Harvard Corporation, the university’s highest governing body, said in a message to the campus on Friday that “interim” would be dropped from Dr. Garber’s title “to recognize his distinguished service to the university and to underscore our belief that this is a time not merely for steady stewardship but for active, engaged leadership.”The university said it would begin a search for a successor to Dr. Garber in 2026. CNN —Two presidential task forces formed to recommend how Harvard can combat antisemitism and anti-Muslim, anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian activity on campus have spoken: Harvard needs to act now. Harvard needs to do more work to promote diversity education and promote multiple perspectives on campus, the task force chairs recommended. The antisemitism task force sought to get Harvard to clarify its values, act against discrimination and hate, improve the university’s disciplinary process, promote dialogue and training on the topic and support Jewish life on campus. Alan Garber, Harvard’s interim president, said he appreciated the recommendations and the task forces’ candor. And the House Education Committee lambasted the university for its response to a subpoena seeking information on how it handled campus protests.

New York CNN —Harvard University announced Tuesday it will no longer weigh in on public matters that don’t impact the Ivy League school’s core function, a shift that follows a historic period of turmoil at the storied university. Harvard leaders announced the new policy after forming a working group in April to debate when the university should speak out. That group concluded that Harvard has a “responsibility to speak out to protect and promote its core function,” including to “defend the university’s autonomy and academic freedom when threatened.”“The university and its leaders should not, however, issue official statements about public matters that do not directly affect the university’s core function,” the working group said in its report. Alan Garber, who replaced Gay as president on interim basis, announced Tuesday the university has accepted the working group’s report and recommendations, which have also been endorsed by The Harvard Corporation, the university’s top governing body. “The process of translating these principles into concrete practice will, of course, require time and experience, and we look forward to the work ahead,” Garber said.

Hundreds of students walked out of Harvard University’s commencement ceremony on Thursday morning as degrees were conferred, while hundreds chanted “Let them walk!”, a reference to 13 student protesters who were not allowed to graduate after a vote Wednesday by the Harvard Corporation, the university’s governing body. The ADL said antisemitic incidents on campus have reached historic levels, leaving Jewish students feeling unsafe. CNN —Harvard University turned over another trove of documents about campus antisemitism to Congress on Monday evening in response to an unprecedented subpoena from the House Education and Workforce Committee. Harvard was facing a 5 pm ET Monday deadline to respond to the subpoena, the first issued since the House Education Committee was founded in March 1867. “Harvard has produced documents in response to the Committee’s subpoena,” Nick Barley, a spokesperson for the House Education Committee, told CNN on Monday evening. “The Committee is currently reviewing those documents.”If Harvard had not responded, the committee would have had to consider further steps to enforce its subpoena. “Harvard denounced antisemitism on our campus and have made clear that the University will continue to take actions to combat antisemitism in any form,” Newton said.

New York CNN —The co-chair of a newly formed task force fighting antisemitism at Harvard University has abruptly stepped down after barely a month at the helm. The Harvard Jewish Alumni Alliance, which the Globe said is leading the campaign, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. When Garber announced the presidential task force on antisemitism, he tapped Sadun and Harvard professor Derek Penslar to co-chair it. Penslar remains on the presidential task force, after receiving significant internal and external support. Harvard announced the changes on Sunday evening, saying Frazier will start Wednesday to fill the open seat on the Harvard Corporation, the powerful yet secretive board under fire its handling of the recent controversies. Frazier, who graduated Harvard Law School in 1978, served as CEO of Merck and sat on the board of ExxonMobil, is widely respected in the business community. CNN —Black History Month, which gets underway this week, is a chance to give Americans the timely reminder that you can’t teach our history honestly without understanding Black struggle and triumph. There are few aspects of America’s past that haven’t been impacted by conscientious Black people and their resistance to systemic racism and illiberal democracy. The situation at Harvard has been made more dire by the university’s failure to push back sufficiently against broader political attacks. Another vocal critic of Penslar is the former Harvard president Lawrence Summers, who was also an outspoken opponent of Gay’s. As an academic institution, we should be leading the resistance to these assaults on higher education, not bowing to them.

New York CNN —Israeli hostage posters that were hung up at Harvard University had been vandalized with antisemitic messages just as students returned from winter break. Footage shared with CNN by Harvard student Alexander Kestenbaum shows a handful of hostage posters defaced with messages such as “Israel did 9/11.” A poster of a four-year-old Israeli hostage was defaced, while “LIES FAKE” was scrawled over another hostage poster. Photos and videos geolocated by CNN indicate the vandalized posters were hung just outside Holworthy Hall, a first-year student dorm located on the northern edge of Harvard Yard. The Harvard spokesperson said the vandalized posters near the Thayer Gate have been removed and the Harvard University Police Department is investigating the incident. “Instead, they were confronted with vandalism, the defacement of hostage posters, and vile antisemitic conspiracy theories.
