As the busiest week for first quarter earnings results kicks off, several stocks on the docket to report this week may be poised for big swings. As of last Friday, 74% of companies in the S & P 500 reported a positive earnings surprise while 58% beat revenue expectations, according to FactSet. This week is scheduled to be the busiest one of the season, with 29% of companies in the S & P 500 — or 146 companies — due to post results. With so many corporate results to be released this week, investors may want to pay special attention to some earnings more than others in advance. CNBC Pro screened for the stocks that could see significant post-earnings moves either up or down, based on investors' expectations in the options market.

Airline investors have reason to grab the barf bag

NEW YORK, Dec 4 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Lately, when airlines suggest a thrilling deal, investors are left feeling queasy. Look at Alaska Air (ALK.N), whose shares cratered 15% on Monday after announcing the acquisition of struggling Hawaiian (HA.O). As happened when first Frontier (ULCC.O) and JetBlue Airways (JBLU.O) bid for Spirit Airlines (SAVE.N) in 2022, though, the buyer’s shareholders are balking. But it suggests that, by tying up, smaller airlines risk combining their woes. The deal comes as a lawsuit by the Department of Justice looking to block the merger of Spirit Airlines and JetBlue Airways heads to closing arguments on Dec. 5.

Those concerns are battering airline stocks even as earnings reports point to a continuing consumer appetite for travel. While both United and Delta said travel demand is holding up, double-digit declines in airfares year-over-year suggest airline pricing power has peaked. United, which has not forecast profit for 2024, on Tuesday similarly said travel demand remains "strong and steady." New labor contracts as well as the higher fuel prices mean cost pressures aren't going away. American Airlines (AAL.O) and Alaska Air (ALK.N), who will report earnings Thursday, have cut their third-quarter profit estimates due to higher fuel costs.

Austin police ruled an AA worker was killed in April by accident, per the Austin American-Statesman. The tug that killed Michal Ingraham was in an incident 10 days before his death, per the report. An AA investigator had argued that Ingraham's death was a suicide, according to the newspaper. An American Airlines employee who died in April when he was involved in a crash on the airport tarmac was found to have been killed by accident, after a corporate investigator for the airline suggested it may have been a suicide, a report says. Both the Travis County medical examiner and police concluded that the worker had been killed by accident, per the report.

Travelers are seen ahead of the fourth of July holiday weekend at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on June 30, 2023, in Atlanta, Georgia. Flight disruptions piled up at airports around the country ahead of the July Fourth weekend, but airline investors have largely shrugged them off. More than 63,000 flights operated by U.S. airlines, or 30% of their schedules, were delayed between June 24 through July 2. But sky-high travel demand continues to keep airline stocks aloft, with several reaching multi-year highs. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines have recently raised their profit outlooks thanks to strong bookings.

New York CNN —Southwest Airlines’ customers are furious about the company’s Christmas week service meltdown. Southwest said that it lost about $350 million in ticket sales for January and February because people have avoided bookings on the airline. No wonder: the holidays are perhaps the worst time of the year to strand customers. One group that has clearly not forgiven Southwest as of yet is airline investors. Southwest (LUV) shares closed Tuesday down only 1% from where they closed December 19, the day before the meltdown started.

New York CNN —Delta Air Lines is rolling out free Wi-Fi to most of its planes beginning February 1. Customers will know if their flight has free Wi-Fi by a decal noting it near the boarding door. It has been testing free Wi-Fi over the past several years, and made messaging free in 2017. Delta is the first of the “Big Three” airlines to offer free Wi-Fi: United Airlines and American Airlines (AAL) both charge varying rates for access. JetBlue (JBLU) has offered free Wi-Fi since 2017.
Dzintars Pomers.
