I travel by air every couple of months, and always think about a single, burning question: What makes for a great airplane movie? Not movies about being on planes. “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,” the latest offering from the director Guy Ritchie, is a perfect airplane movie. But you’ve got to watch something, and for that, we have movies like this one. Ritchie didn’t always make airplane movies.

A dead goose was found in part of the flight control system of a medical helicopter that crashed in western Oklahoma, killing all three people on board, according to a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board. The report does not cite a suspected cause of the crash, but noted one goose was found in the helicopter's flight control system and others were found in the debris field. A report on the probable cause could take up to two years to complete, according to the NTSB. The helicopter crashed Jan. 20 in a pasture near Hydro, about 60 miles (97 kilometers) west of Oklahoma City, as it was returning to Weatherford after taking a patient to an Oklahoma City hospital. The pilot and both Air Evac Lifeteam crew members, a flight nurse and a paramedic, were killed.

An ongoing volcanic eruption has created a tiny island near Iwoto. AdvertisementAdvertisementJapan has a new tiny island thanks to an ongoing eruption from an underwater volcano. The 328-foot-wide island emerged in the Ogasawara Island chain, about half a mile from Iwoto (formerly known as Iwo Jima). Those who want to marvel at the rare sight should do so quickly, as the island may not last very long, Usui told the AP. Similar volcanic islands appeared in the area in 1904, 1914, and 1986 but have all since been washed away, said Fukashi Maeno, an associate professor at Tokyo University's earthquake research institute, per The Guardian.

Rises in food prices, which make up about half the consumer price index (CPI), continue to cool from recent peaks after the Indian government enacted a series of measures to boost supply. "Having said that, the persistent part of the food inflation problem remains there, which is cereals, pulses and spices, and I think the RBI can't do much about it anyway." Rising crude oil prices are also likely to keep inflation elevated in the world's third-largest oil importer. Oil prices rose around 3% on Monday to trade around $90 a barrel. "Oil prices ... are likely to remain high over the remainder of the year on global supply concerns," said Alexandra Hermann at Oxford Economics.

And an ongoing EV price war started earlier this year by Tesla's Elon Musk, is forcing deeper losses as companies chase volume over profits in the EV sector. Ford recently adjusted its electric vehicle timeline to reflect this change in EV demand. After several years of rapid growth from eager early adopters to the electric vehicle segment, EV sellers are facing the first plateau. EV sales hit a high of nearly 6% in the US last year, bringing the segment closer to a predicted 7-10% tipping point. At this level of adoption, EV sales are expected to slow considerably.

Soon after the derailment of a Norfolk Southern train in East Palestine, Ohio, a team of researchers began roving the small town in a Nissan van. Longer-term exposure to concentrations of acrolein at the detected levels may be a health concern, the researchers wrote. Low levels of exposure to acrolein are associated with slow breathing and burning in the nose and the throat. The levels of vinyl chloride that were detected, meanwhile, were below the Environmental Protection Agency's threshold for long-term risks.

LONDON, July 5 (Reuters) - A lack of data on electric vehicle (EV) batteries continues to challenge insurers who are forced to scrap EVs after mild accidents, potentially undermining EV adoption, Thatcham Research said on Wednesday. Adrian Watson, Thatcham's head of engineering research, said in an ideal world insurers could make informed decisions about whether to repair EVs or write it off based on access to data on its state of health after an accident. "The diagnostics we have do not enable you to really know what the status of the battery is." Due to their potential fire risk, damaged EVs awaiting repair must be stored outside at least 15 metres (49 ft) from other objects. An outside facility for 100 fossil-fuel cars today would have space to safely quarantine just two EVs, Thatcham said.

Why are other automakers chasing Tesla's 'Gigacasting'?

Here's a look at Gigacasting and how the innovation is forcing automakers to scramble to match Tesla:WHAT IS GIGACASTING? The Giga Press is an aluminium die-casting machine adopted by Tesla at its factories in the U.S., China and Germany. The house-sized machines are able to produce aluminium parts far bigger than anything used before in auto manufacturing. Toyota said it expected that using aluminium die-casting would eliminate dozens of sheet metal parts from assembly and reduce waste. The global aluminium die-casting market was worth almost $73 billion last year and is projected to top $126 billion by 2032, showed an AlixPartners analysis.
