Maverick Capital wasn't immune to the private market turmoil that has tanked start-ups and crushed venture capital returns. Like many private investors, Maverick has marked down some of its investments internally as higher interest rates have put pressure on money-losing start-ups. Snapdocs, according to Maverick, should no longer be considered a unicorn, valuing the online mortgage processing company at $628 million. Maverick, which runs a $1.4 billion venture and growth fund, is bullish on a few of its companies, though — even raising their valuations despite the overall market turbulence. Brazilian digital rental marketplace company QuintoAndar is worth 20% more now than when Maverick invested at the end of 2021.

The Tiger Cub's fund rose 5.60% in May and has gained 19.48% year to date, according to HSBC's Hedge Weekly performance report. This is a welcome turn of events for the Tiger Cubs, funds founded by portfolio managers who worked under the legendary Tiger Management head Julian Robertson. Tiger Global finished the year down 56%, and Coatue lost 18.8%. Fellow Tiger Cubs Lone Pine and grand cub D1 Capital also had double-digit losses, while Viking Global reported a single-digit loss.

May 8 (Reuters) - Tom Slingsby and his Australian crew clinched this season's SailGP Championship in San Francisco Bay on Sunday, notching up their third straight win and with it another $1 million prize. A dominant Australia held off a last-minute surge from runner-up Peter Burling's New Zealand in the three-boat final, with Ben Ainslie's Emirates Great Britain trailing in behind in what has been billed as sailing's answer to Formula One. There will be little downtime for the crews with SailGP's fourth season due to begin on June 16-17 in Chicago, the first of 12 events around the world which will culminate once again in San Francisco Bay in July next year. SailGP said that a new team, which it did not name, would be joining the others for the start in the next U.S. event. CNN —Organ donations and transplantations increase during major US motorcycle rallies due to crashes, according to a new study, signaling a need for increased safety measures. In regions near where motorcycle rallies were held, there were 21% more organ donors and 26% more transplant recipients per day during rallies than in the four weeks before and after. In nearby areas without a motorcycle rally on those same dates, there were 11% fewer organ donors and 10% fewer transplant recipients. Large motorcycle rallies often come with a surge in trauma volume at local hospitals, the study says. Safer ridingThe Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, held each August, is the largest and most popular in the country.

Lee Ainslie's Maverick Capital is betting on Netflix once again and beefing up positions in several beaten-up technology stocks after a rough year for the sector. The hedge fund opened a fresh stake worth $82.9 million in Netflix during the third quarter, according to regulatory filings. Ainslie owned the streaming stock earlier this year, but liquidated his position during the second quarter. Netflix shares have come under pressure this year in an increasingly competitive streaming environment, with shares down roughly 49%. Coatue Management, meanwhile, trimmed its position in the streaming stock.

London CNN —Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey has been charged with seven more sexual offenses, UK police have said. The 63-year-old actor was charged on Tuesday with a number of sexual offenses against the same man between 2001 and 2004, London’s Metropolitan Police said in a statement to CNN on Wednesday. Spacey is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on December 16. In July, Spacey pleaded not guilty in a London court to four charges of sexual assault and one count of causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent. Spacey has won two Academy Awards for his roles in “The Usual Suspects” and “American Beauty,” and was artistic director of London’s Old Vic theater from 2003 to 2015.
