About 53% of active bond managers survived and beat the passive average in 2023, up from 30% in 2022, the research firm said in a recent report . Intermediate core bond funds largely invest in investment-grade debt, spanning from government issues to corporates. The Federal Reserve's monetary policy set the tone for the fixed income world in 2023 – right down to which exchange traded funds investors picked to take advantage of higher interest rates. Bond yields have an inverse relationship to their prices, so that when prices decline, yields rise and vice versa. The Vanguard Long-Term Treasury ETF (VGLT) was another favorite of investors, with about $7.3 billion in net flows in 2023. Indeed, those strategies proved popular with investors in 2023, as the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (BND) and iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG) were ETFs with the second and third highest net flows, per Morningstar.

Tax loss harvesting is a staple of year-end planning. Bonds are ripe for tax loss harvesting in the wake of the Federal Reserve's rate-hiking cycle. Consider that the longer-dated iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) has a year-to-date total return of about -7.3%, while the shorter-term iShares Core US Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG) has a total return of roughly 0.7% in 2023, according to Morningstar. "Tax loss harvesting is a silver lining for some of the pain they've been feeling the last couple of years." BlackRock Chief Investment Officer of Fixed Income Rick Rieder said investors underestimate actively managed fixed income exchange-traded funds. He told CNBC's "ETF Edge" this week that one of his firm's newest fixed income funds, the BlackRock Flexible Income ETF (BINC), has outperformed peers because its allocations are based on current market opportunity. "The beauty of this active ETF is we can move around and take advantage of where the opportunity is," said Rieder, who manages roughly $2.6 trillion in fixed income assets. "I think active ETFs in fixed income, people underestimate." U.S. high yield credit follows at nearly 17%, then U.S. investment grade credit at approximately 14% of total allocations.

Bonds are starting to make a lot of sense for investors, Forrest said. Even after pulling back somewhat from those levels, the benchmark yield remains within striking distance of the key 5% threshold. The potential unwinding of what BofA recently called the "greatest bond bear market in history" has more investors trying to lock in higher yields ahead of potential rate cuts next year from the Federal Reserve. BlackRock global fixed income CIO Rick Rieder said Friday that this year's bond market volatility has created opportunities to buy high quality yields on the cheap. Treasury yields are spiking to levels not seen in over 15 years, causing sell-offs in many of the market's biggest bond funds. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) closed at $89.18 on Monday, which was its lowest close since Feb. 10, 2011, according to FactSet. The Fed's target interest rate is already above 5%, as are short-term Treasury yields. But the long-term decline in bond yields began roughly two decades before that. That trend may finally have reached its turning point, Jim Grant, founder of Grant's Interest Rate Observer, said Tuesday on CNBC's " Squawk Box ."

Should I Ditch Bonds for Money-Market Funds or CDs?

By Steve GarmhausenIs it reasonable or even wise to shift some of your bond allocation to money-market funds paying over 5%? The broad bond market had its worst year ever in 2022, as reflected by the AGG—the iShares Core U.S. Bonds vs. money-market fundsSo should you really sell bonds and use the proceeds to buy these products? Bonds have also performed better historically than the “cash” category, which includes money-market funds. Money-market funds are considered a low-risk investment, and one that’s easy to sell if you need cash.

The Simplify fund uses over-the-counter derivatives, including so-called "swaptions," in an effort to guard against rising interest rates and benefit from volatility in fixed income markets. Many investors appear comfortable betting on stocks to continue rising after a surprising strong first half, according to fund flow data. Investors even plowed $1.9 billion into the Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (QQQ) , which is up almost 40% so far this year. The flows are notable because investors have been somewhat reluctant to put more money in stocks this year despite the rally. Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG) and the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (BND) also saw inflows this week, so some investors are still hedging their bets on stocks. With investors starting to chase the recent rally, all major regions except Europe saw inflows.

Then the war came, and according to the family history, Union soldiers plundered Sessions’ 27-room house. About 48 years old at the time, he did not stand a chance to succeed without slavery, the family history suggests. ‘A Better Nation’Some historians and genealogists say there is a valuable reason for white leaders – and other white Americans – to explore their links to slavery. The top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Meeks said in an interview that he has spent years trying to trace his family history back before 1870.

A year into the most significant period of Federal Reserve rate hikes in decades, you might think investors had already cemented their investment portfolio strategies for a higher interest rate world. According to LACERA's 2022 annual report, its investments were split between roughly $24 billion in public equities, $19 billion in bonds, $13 billion in private equity, $6 billion in real estate, $4 billion in hedge funds and $1 billion in real assets. Last year was the first in the prior three fiscal years that the pension fund's investment portfolio lost money. By contrast, investment returns of 25.2% in 2021 were far ahead of the 7% percent, which LACERA attributed to the strong performance from global equity and private equity assets. A shift to more fixed income among top investors will flow through to the "whole economy," Grabel said.

Everyone here is amazed at how forgotten segments of the market have rebounded in 2023: international, growth, small cap and bonds. Advisors here are having a hard time wrapping their heads around the idea that there would be a recession ins 2023, and now maybe not. "With real wage growth, large payroll growth and earnings beating expectations it equals a soft landing at worst and maybe no recession near term." Most advisors here are coming to grips with Powell's insistence the Fed will not lower rates this year. Their Equal Weight S & P 500 ETF (RSP) has also attracted significant inflows from investors wary of market cap weighted indexes.

The spate of new launches comes as cash floods into fixed income products. "On one hand, it helps explain the dual-edged pain for 60/40 portfolios this year, but the -17% decline now has bond ETFs offering realistic yields as an equity alternative. This helps explain the continued surge to Treasury ETFs, which again led our category workbook with +$12 Bn [last week] and over +$110 Bn YTD," Sohn added. Holly Framsted, the director of ETFs at Capital Group, said the firm is not trying to time the market with its launches but does believe there is an underserved demand for actively managed bond ETFs. Capital Group launched three more fixed income ETFs, including funds focused on municipal bonds and short duration bonds, last week.
Dow plunges and is back in a bear market

The Dow is now back in bear market territory, more than 20% below the all-time high it set in January. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite sank 3.4% Thursday and has plummeted even more than the Dow and S&P in 2022. The stock market had a promising start to the quarter, soaring in July. But fears about inflation, rate hikes, rising bond yields and recession returned with a vengeance in August and September. But two popular, widely held bond funds, the Vanguard Total Bond Market Index Fund ETF (BND) and iShares Core U.S.
The S & P 500 is about 70 points below where it was at the close of the last Federal Reserve meeting on July 27. The last several Fed meetings have seen the S & P close up on the announcement day, but there's no pattern after that. After the May 4 meeting, the S & P dropped three days in a row, and after the March 16 meeting, a rally continued for several days. Corporate bond funds are also at new lows, including the Vanguard Short-Term Corporate Bond ETF (VCSH) and the iShares Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (LQD) . Remarkably, there have not been outflows from these funds, likely because they have strong institutional support and broad bond funds like these tend to be "sticky."
