CNN —Blue Origin’s tourism rocket is poised to launch passengers to the edge of space for the first time in nearly two years, ending a hiatus prompted by a failed uncrewed test flight. The New Shepard rocket and capsule are set to lift off during a window that opens at 8:30 a.m. CT (9:30 a.m. New Shepard’s 2022 failureA New Shepard rocket and spacecraft were set to launch a batch of science instruments on September 12, 2022. The New Shepard capsule, which rides atop the rocket, then initiated its launch abort system — firing up a small engine to blast itself safely away from the malfunctioning rocket. Blue OriginNo injuries were reported on the ground, and Blue Origin said the science payloads and the capsule could be flown again.

CNN —Apollo astronaut Thomas Kenneth Mattingly II, known for helping the crew of Apollo 13 safely return to Earth after an explosion doomed their lunar mission, has died at the age of 87, NASA announced. “Perhaps his most dramatic role at NASA was after exposure to rubella just before the launch of Apollo 13,” Nelson said. WASHINGTON — James A. McDivitt, who commanded the Apollo 9 mission testing the first complete set of equipment to go to the moon, has died. He passed on a chance to land on the moon and instead became the space agency’s program manager for five Apollo missions after the Apollo 11 moon landing. ... it was like cellophane and tin foil put together with Scotch tape and staples!”Unlike many of his fellow astronauts, McDivitt didn’t yearn to fly from childhood. McDivitt didn’t have money for college growing up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. “And being the second or third guy wasn’t that important to me.”So McDivitt went into management, first of the Apollo lunar lander, then for the Houston part of the entire program.
