The move would make Reddit the first major social media company to go public since Snapchat in 2017. In its 18 years as an online social hub, Reddit has seen enormous growth, occasional controversy and even market-shifting stunts. Reddit users often post anonymously in these forums, discussing everything from memes to major news events. The price hikes have led some beloved third-party Reddit apps such as Apollo to shut down, instigating an uproar among the website's community of volunteer moderators, who often rely on third-party apps to run the site's 100,000+ discussion communities, called subreddits. But tensions remain high, and some say that if Reddit doesn't rebuild trust, its most passionate users will go elsewhere. Ohanian rejoined Reddit as executive chairman in 2014 and Huffman rejoined as CEO the next year. But it's not just tech giants who use Reddit's API. These third-party apps are largely just alternatives to Reddit's official mobile app, which didn't even exist until 2016.

Carlo Vittorini, who as publisher guided Parade magazine, the nearly ubiquitous weekly Sunday newspaper supplement, to revenue and circulation heights, died on June 25 at his summer home in Nantucket, Mass. His wife, Nancy Vittorini, said the cause was congestive heart failure. Mr. Vittorini spent 50 years in the magazine business, nearly all of it when it was still thriving. In 1992, when Parade’s circulation was soaring, he confidently told The St. Joseph News-Press/Gazette of Missouri: “Nobody can get a message out as quickly as we can. Steve Huffman, CEO of Reddit, delivers remarks on 'Redesigning Reddit' during the Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, Nov. 8, 2017. More than 6,000 Reddit communities have gone dark and are restricting access to protest the changes to the company's developer billing structure, beginning Monday morning. The blackout comes after Reddit told developers that it would begin to charge thousands of dollars for access to an application programming interface, or API. Among the concerns for the blackout organizers is allowing third-party apps to run advertising for the third-party developer's benefit. Developers use APIs to communicate directly with a website's software or infrastructure, and they allow Reddit's third-party developer ecosystem to build applications and services for users.

Application programming interfaces (APIs) have long been the way that third parties access the data from large internet companies and connect to their apps. Reddit has a thriving ecosystem of apps, plugins, and services created by amateur and professional developers. Users and developers were outraged when Twitter said it would charge $42,000 for 50 million requests. Apollo said it paid about $166 for the same number of API requests from the online-image sharing service Imgur. While many companies charge for API use, Reddit has historically derived the bulk of its income from advertising.
