To gather every last stem and ribbon, Mr. Patrikis is on the phone constantly, negotiating with 15 distributors to get the best deals. “If you don’t know how to buy from the wholesalers, the wholesalers are going to buy you,” he said. Mr. Patrikis prefers the Explorer variety of red roses, which he said tend to have larger blooms and stay fresh longer than some other varieties. The elevated prices put pressure on longtime florists like Mr. Patrikis, whose shop was one of five on his block around 2010. Ditmars Flower Shop is now the last one left.

Shein Still Needs to Prove It’s a Bargain

A wide range of apparel at affordable prices has made Shein a sensation. Photo: Adrienne Grunwald for The Wall Street JournalBuilt-in-China online fashion company Shein has swept the world with its fast-to-market, hip designs. It now needs to show investors that its breakneck growth can convert into bigger profit, too. The company is probably looking for a valuation higher than the $66 billion implied by a fundraising round in May. That would put Shein’s market value comfortably above H&M ’s $27 billion but below Zara’s parent Inditex ’s $127 billion.

“Let’s light it up!” the actress Jennifer Lawrence said on Monday night as she helped to reveal the holiday windows and kick off the annual lights show at Saks Fifth Avenue. As is tradition, onlookers crammed behind barricades near 50th Street as performers — in this case from the Martha Graham Dance Company — flooded Fifth Avenue. Behind them, nearly 300,000 lights illuminated what is described as a “wheel of fortune” installation, which covered 10 stories of the Saks Fifth Avenue New York flagship facade. Ms. Lawrence, a longtime Dior ambassador, gathered alongside other actresses, including Tracee Ellis Ross, Rachel Zegler, Ashley Park, Alexandra Daddario, Lola Tung and Maya Hawke. They packed onto bleachers across the street for the show, which included fireworks launched from the roof of the department store.

Image This year’s women’s race was oddly slow until the last few miles. Tola had arrived in New York with questions about his fitness after he dropped out of the marathon at the world championships in Budapest this summer. When she made her marathon debut in New York last year, she went out fast before struggling to a sixth-place finish. “Sometimes,” Obiri said, “you learn from your mistakes.”She put those lessons to use in Boston earlier this year when she won her first world marathon major. By then, only Obiri, Gidey, Lokedi and two others — Viola Cheptoo, the runner-up in 2021, and Brigid Kosgei, a five-time world marathon major champion — were still in contention.

It was hard to miss Mark Aaron Polger, Alexi Pappas and Masashi Kondo at the New York City Marathon on Sunday. With energy gels and bodega coffees in hand, the crowd made its way to Fort Wadsworth, where thousands of runners congregate each year before running the New York City Marathon. Speed demons wearing Nike Vaporflys and short-shorts mingled with casual runners wearing “Monsters, Inc.” onesies. That’s the record I’m going for. Running is therapeutic, even though I’m going to be running really, really slowly.

ALBANY, N. Y.—Alisa McMorris totes a wagon filled with leaflets and a picture of her son Andrew, who was killed by a drunken driver in 2018, as she makes the rounds in the state capitol. The 49-year-old Long Island woman, a member of the advocacy group Mothers Against Drunk Driving, is pressing legislators to pass a new state law that she says could decrease such tragedies: lowering the legal threshold for what constitutes driving under the influence of alcohol.
It takes more than flexible hamstrings to perform the sky-high kicks of the Radio City Rockettes. Incredible balance and stamina, as well as core and lower-body strength, are required to execute approximately 200 kicks during each show, says Danelle Morgan , the Rockettes’ dance captain and assistant choreographer. “It’s our job to make it look easy,” she says. “But believe me, we train.”
