Caldwell, Idaho CNN —Jen and John Adkins never expected to have to send a package like this. Idaho’s abortion laws meant they had to seek care across state lines after receiving devastating news about a much-wanted pregnancy. “As soon as that ultrasound technician put that wand on my stomach and I saw the baby on the screen, I knew something was wrong,” Jen told CNN. “I was sent home to grieve and mourn and call around to see if we could get an appointment out of state,” Jen said. NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — “Beer For My Horses” singer-songwriter Toby Keith has died. “The money to be made was unbelievable,” Keith told The Associated Press in 1996. “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” his breakout hit, was played 3 million times on radio stations, making it the most played country song of the 1990s. “They were trying to get me to compromise, and I was living a miserable existence,” Keith told the AP. “I always felt like that the songwriting was the most important part of this whole industry,” Keith told the crowd of fellow singers and writers.

Every few years the Museum of Modern Art asks an artist to sift through its vast holdings and assemble a chamber-music-scale exhibition. Past guest curators have included Ellsworth Kelly, Elizabeth Murray and Amy Sillman. This year the invitation went to the London-based designer Grace Wales Bonner and what a fantastic work of poetic research she’s orchestrated in the show she calls “Spirit Movers.”The idea of sound embodied in material is her foundational theme. In 36 objects she covers a wide modern-contemporary cultural field, which includes figures well-known and overlooked, several with links to the Afro-Atlantic world. The resulting harmonic convergence of these various objects unfurls with a welcoming anthem in the form of Terry Adkins’s monumental wind instrument ensemble, “Last Trumpet,” and with a glowing fanfare in Agnes Martin’s 1963 gold-leaf painting “Friendship.”

Grace Wales Bonner’s approach to fashion can sometimes feel more like that of an academic rather than a designer. Her collections for Wales Bonner, the brand she started in 2015, are informed by dazzlingly intensive research spanning critical theory, music, literature, history and mysticism. Her clever embrace of so many perspectives and personalities, and her proudly Afro-Atlantic approach to fashion, has made Ms. Wales Bonner, 33, an increasingly influential figure in field. This year, she began showing her collections in Paris, the creative and commercial epicenter of luxury fashion. But Ms. Wales Bonner is also a polymath with artistic ambitions outside fashion.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In July, country music star Craig Morgan reenlisted in the Army Reserves on the historic Grand Ole Opry stage. It also inspired the title for the new EP he had been working on: “Enlisted,” out Friday. The six-song collection includes two new tracks and a few reimaginations of his hits, alongside A-list and up-and-coming collaborators like Blake Shelton, Trace Adkins, Luke Combs, Lainey Wilson, and Jelly Roll. Jelly Roll was almost moved to tears when he described how the song gave him hope. Country Music Awards favorite Wilson joins Morgan on “International Harvester.”"Lainey Wilson had listened to it growing up with her dad, riding around in the truck on the farm," he says.

There, they will join a US Navy carrier strike group that recently deployed to waters near Israel. "Meanwhile, a Royal Navy task group will be moved to the eastern Mediterranean next week as a contingency measure to support humanitarian efforts." The government said that the military package will be on standby to deliver support to Israel and its partners, and provide deterrence. It includes P-8 patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, surveillance assets, three helicopters, a company of Royal Marines, and two Royal Navy ships — the landing ship RFA Lyme Bay and the casualty receiving ship RFA Argus. The USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group was deployed in the eastern Mediterranean amid a growing crisis in Israel. Carrier strike groups host significant airpower and firepower, and the Ford's new technological capabilities make it a major presence. US officials announced the movement of the carrier strike group toward Israel on Sunday, the day after Hamas carried out deadly terror attacks against the US ally. The amount of firepower each vessel brings adds up, especially considering the capabilities of the air wing aboard USS Gerald R. Ford. It set out on a short maiden deployment last year and its first full deployment as part of a fully certified carrier strike group earlier this year.

After two years of receiving federal subsidies, 220,000 child care programs across the country were cut off from funding Saturday. The largest investment in child care in U.S. history, the monthly payments ranged from hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars, and stabilized the industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. She said taxpayers will end up paying more in the long run to welfare programs if the government doesn't make investments now in child care. There are just two child care centers in the entire county, and the community can't afford to lose either one, she said. If West Virginia wants to grow its economy, child care is part the infrastructure necessary for that to happen, Tiffany Gale said.

Eight women in Idaho and Tennessee are asking state courts to place holds on their states' abortion laws after being denied access to the procedure while facing harrowing pregnancy complications that they say endangered their lives. Political Cartoons View All 1154 ImagesLike the Texas lawsuit, none of the complaints filed Tuesday are seeking to overturn the states' abortion bans. Spokespersons for attorneys general in Idaho and Tennessee, which are both named as defendants in the cases, did not respond to emailed requests for comment. The legal challenges filed Tuesday comprise deeply personal testimonies from women who were denied abortion services and physicians who were terrified of violating the states' abortion bans. DHHS said the federal Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act supersedes state abortion bans that don’t have adequate exceptions for medical emergencies.

Teachers, too, are digging deeper to meet their classroom needs out of pocket. As more teachers quit over low salaries and other concerns, it’s exacerbating the ongoing teachers shortage in the United States. Consumer price inflation remains elevated, but has come down considerably since hitting 40-year highs last year. Last year, Gilliam spent about $1,000 stocking up on school supplies. Adjusted for inflation, teachers on average are making $3,644 less than they did 10 years ago, the NEA said.

WASHINGTON, May 30 (Reuters) - The White House said on Tuesday that President Joe Biden is withdrawing the nomination of the acting head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to take the top job on a permanent basis. Ann Carlson, the agency's chief counsel, was named acting head of NHTSA in September and formally nominated for the top position in March. They told Carlson the standards were "consistent with your long career as an environmentalist without traffic safety experience." Jonathan Adkins, head of the nonprofit Governors Highway Safety Association representing state and territorial highway safety offices, said the group was deeply disappointed in the withdrawal of Carlson's nomination. During the Trump administration no nominee was ever confirmed to head NHTSA and there was no nominee for much of the four-year period.

Michigan researchers found two shipwrecks in Lake Superior. The ships disappeared as storms swept through while they were hauling lumber across the lake in 1914. The organization operates a museum in Whitefish Point and regularly runs searches for shipwrecks, aiming to tell "the lost history of all the Great Lakes" with a focus on Lake Superior, said Corey Adkins, the society's content and communications director. There was also damage to the Marvin's bow and the Curtis' stern, making researchers wonder whether a collision contributed, he said. "We're the first human eyes to see it since 1914, since World War I," one team member mused.
