REUTERS/Kevin LamarqueWASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President-elect Joe Biden will wait for a recommendation from his intelligence advisers on whether to share classified information with President Donald Trump after the Republican leaves office, Biden’s top aide said on Sunday. Ron Klain, the incoming White House chief of staff, made the comment after former principal deputy director of national intelligence, Sue Gordon, wrote an op-ed arguing against sharing such information with Trump once he has left the presidency. “We’ll certainly look for a recommendation from the intelligence professionals in the Biden administration ... and we will act on that recommendation,” he said. Democratic House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff was more blunt, telling CBS’ “Face The Nation” program, “I don’t think he can be trusted with it.”

Michigan, Virginia, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Washington were among more than a dozen states that activated their National Guards to strengthen security. Meanwhile, downtown Washington, D.C., was virtually empty, with streets near the Capitol closed and battalions of camouflaged National Guard soldiers taking up positions across the city center. It was signed by House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, House Homeland Security Chairman Bennie Thompson, House Oversight Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler. In Michigan, a fence was erected around the Capitol in Lansing, and troopers were mobilized from across the state to bolster security. A tearful Beeler later told the Washington Post he had been working security in Washington all week and pulled up to the checkpoint after getting lost.

Michigan, Virginia, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Washington were among states that activated their National Guards to strengthen security. Responding to news of the arrest, Democratic U.S. Representative Don Beyer of Virginia said the danger was real and the city was on edge. “Anyone who can avoid the area around the Capitol and Mall this week should do so,” Beyer wrote on Twitter. Thousands of armed National Guard troops were in the streets in Washington in an unprecedented show of force after the assault on the U.S. Capitol. Others told the Washington Post they wanted the protest organized in response to new state gun rules to be peaceful.

“He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding.” “These facts require immediate actions by President Trump,” he continued. A few Republicans defended him, but most others simply argued that a rush to impeach Mr. Trump without a hearing or an investigation raised constitutional questions. With Democrats controlling the House, Mr. Trump is expected to become the first American president to be impeached twice. Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington sent a letter to Mr. Trump on Sunday asking for an emergency declaration to obtain additional funding for inauguration security. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Following a Tuesday briefing by the FBI on last week’s deadly violence at the U.S. Capitol, six top lawmakers on the U.S. House of Representatives committees on homeland security, justice, oversight, intelligence and the armed services said in statement that they are worried about safety in the near future. “Based on today’s briefing, we have grave concerns about ongoing and violent threats to our democracy. It is clear that more must be done to preempt, penetrate, and prevent deadly and seditious assaults by domestic violent extremists in the days ahead,” wrote the lawmakers, including Judiciary Chair Jerrod Nadler and Intelligence Chair Adam Schiff, slightly more than one week before the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.

(Reuters) - U.S. President-elect Joe Biden on Monday tapped a former career diplomat in William Burns to lead the CIA as the Democrat raced to put a national security team in place days before his inauguration. Burns, president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace for nearly five years, would also head an agency advising Biden on where he can cooperate with China and where to confront the world’s rising power. Burns must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate, where Biden’s fellow Democrats will soon have a narrow majority. “As a career diplomat under Democratic and Republican presidents, he has established himself as a smart and tested public servant who is free from political interference,” said incoming Senate intelligence committee chair Mark Warner. Biden has called on lawmakers to confirm his national security team as close to his inauguration as possible.

Democratic lawmakers are calling for President Trump to be impeached after a recording showed him pleading with Georgia secretary of state Brad Raffensperger to "find" thousands of extra votes and overturn Joe Biden's election victory there. Excerpts of an extraordinary recording of Trump's phone call with Brad Raffensperger, who is also a Republican, was published by the Washington Post on Sunday. During the call, President Trump can be heard sharing unsubstantiated theories about election fraud and telling Raffensperger: "All I want to do is this. Rep. Several government agencies, including the NSA and the Department of Homeland Security, have issued technical advisories on the situation. The latest U.S. hack employed a similar technique: SolarWinds said its software updates had been compromised and used to surreptitiously install malicious code in nearly 18,000 customer systems. In some cases where access was especially valuable, the hackers used it to deploy more active malicious software to spread across its host. “This is powerful tradecraft, and needs to be understood to defend important networks,” Rob Joyce, a senior NSA cybersecurity adviser, said on Twitter. “Now we learn with the SolarWinds hack that if anything, the defenders are falling farther behind.

Are we really to believe that tweets from the leader of the free world go over Cornyn's head — but somehow, tweets from Tanden don't? When Trump posted a tweet threatening to postpone the election, Cornyn defended it as a joke designed to make the media's "heads explode." Cornyn is unwilling to hold the president of the United States to the same standard of scrutiny that he is trying to hold Biden's nominees to. Already, we're seeing Republicans push back against Xavier Becerra, Biden's pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. Republicans think they can weaponize Biden's professionalism against him while trying to wash away the stain of their silence during these past four years.

If America meets it with fear and faces China alone, the conflict has the power to push the country into decline. To bring rural China into the 21st century, to leapfrog over all this debt, to develop cutting-edge technology, and to become an unstoppable world power, China needs significant economic growth. If you make China the enemy, China will be the enemy," the official said. It's not as if a curtain will fall one morning and the West's relationship with China will be wildly changed. This question is a departure from old thinking — from the belief that a capitalist China is a more democratic China.
