But I've only ever done two TV series, so now it's "Dr. Quinn" or "Harry Wild." AdvertisementAnd by the way, I got the worst reviews ever on "Dr. Quinn" as well. Studio Seven Productions/NM/Sygma via Getty ImagesI was going to bring up "Dr. Quinn" next — did you expect it to turn into such a beloved show when you initially signed on? There's another factoid that when I did "Dr. Quinn," I only washed my hair in English rainwater that was flown in on a 747 every week.

In his 27 years at the helm of Amazon, Jeff Bezos taught his successor, Jassy, and others a lot about how to run one of the world's biggest businesses. One of Bezos' meeting no-nos is PowerPoints, which he has banned in company meetings. "I thought to myself, 'We can sell anything this way,'" Bezos said. Bezos says Type 1 decisions take up most of your time, while Type 2 decisions should be delegated or grouped with other smaller decisions for later. Bezos believes you should make decisions with 70% of the information you wish you had, and iterate from there.

Jeff Bezos built Amazon into a tech behemoth and "everything store" that's now worth $1.6 trillion. Jassy, Bezos' longtime deputy, took the company's reins after the Amazon founder stepped down in 2021. "There aren't too many other bigger thinkers than Jeff Bezos," Jassy said, adding: "He always had a way of getting teams to think bigger." Jassy nonetheless touted Bezos' approach for inspiring great work from employees that helped fuel Amazon's success. "[Bezos] had a way of having really high standards, and then having everybody really stretch and aspire to those standards."

John Belushi Was Just Getting Started

When a great talent dies young, the world is diminished. You find yourself thinking not only of what that person created but of what that person could have created if he’d had time. For me, there is no purer case of the-acorn-that-would-have-become-the-oak-had-it-not-been-pancaked-by-the truck than John Belushi, who, had he not died at age 33 in 1982, would turn 75 this month. In a world full of followers, Belushi seemed like the last free man. He lived the showbiz maxim: to do anything original, you must be willing to make a fool of yourself.

Arm's big break came in 1993, when Apple launched its early handheld Newton device on the Arm610 processor. Arm's big break came in 1993 when Apple released its handheld Newton device on the Arm610 processor. Apple moved to its own Arm-based processors in Mac computers in 2020, breaking away from the Intel x86 processors that had powered them for 15 years. Qualcomm is another major customer making its latest PC processors using Arm, although that relationship is strained. This simplification is also making Arm the choice for non-chip companies like Apple, Amazon, Google and Microsoft designing their own custom silicon.

The practice of citizen-originated ballot measures began 125 years ago when South Dakota became the first in the nation to enact a statewide initiative and referendum process. But some still invoke his name in their fight to preserve voters’ ballot measure rights. “It represents for me the fundamental idea of the equal dignity of every human being,” said Heidelberger, who blogs about South Dakota politics. The political conditions were brief but just right in 1897 for lawmakers to approve it; voters passed it the following year. Emata, a Ugandan startup that provides loans to farmers in East Africa, has raised $2.4 million in funding. It's also fundamentally unfair as farmers need capital to grow but a lot of money goes to people with connections, not the best farmers." Kampala-based Emata wants to be tech first in its offering and uses WhatsApp as a loan origination platform, given its popularity in a region where cell data is at a premium. The company claims it grew 7x in 2022 and could point to strong metrics when dealing with investors having already dispersed over $1 million in loans. Funding will go towards expanding the company's tech offering and looking into new verticals.

Arm kicked off its roadshow in Baltimore, where influential asset manager T Rowe Price is headquartered, underscoring the fund manager's significance in big IPOs. Arm disclosed the proposed range would value it at between $48 billion and $52 billion. The valuation that Arm is chasing represents a climb-down from the $64 billion valuation at which SoftBank last month acquired the 25% stake it did not already own in the company from its $100 billion Vision Fund. Jamie Mills O’Brien, portfolio manager at British fund manager Abrdn, said he found SoftBank's valuation ask in the IPO "more palatable than initially discussed." Unlike most loss-making but high-growth tech companies that debut with lofty valuations but later plummet below list price, Arm is profitable.

Arm's stock market launch is expected to bring back to life a lackluster IPO market, which has over the last year seen several high-profile startups postpone their listing plans due to market volatility. Arm said that more than 50% of its royalty revenue for the most recent fiscal year came from smartphones and consumer electronics. The company, whose chip technology powers most smartphones including iPhones, did not reveal the number of shares it is planning to sell and the valuation it will seek. Arm makes money from upfront licensing fees for technology and then a royalty paid on each chip sold by Arm's customers. Arm's chip designs dominate the smartphone industry, but they are also used in laptops made by Apple (AAPL.O) and some Windows machines.

Its debut will be a big deal for an IPO market that's been in the doldrums since 2022, but the company's listing has big implications for SoftBank as well. SoftBank agreed to acquire Arm in 2016 for $32 billion, which at the time was the biggest-ever purchase of a European technology company. The unit also swung to a 9.5 billion yen loss, having made a profit of 29.8 billion yen in the same period a year earlier. SoftBank said its Vision Fund booked an investment gain of 159.8 billion yen, its first gain in five consecutive quarters. In July, the company led a $65 million investment in U.K. insurance technology company Tractable.

‘Happy Valley’ Review: The End of the Hero’s Journey
  + stars: | 2023-05-19 | by ( Mike Hale | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
She’s a contemporary knight errant, upholding a code of decency against the terrors of modern life. “Happy Valley,” whose final season premieres on Monday (streaming on Acorn TV and AMC+, broadcast on BBC America), is a pocket-size, prosaic saga — a hero’s tale contained in three six-episode seasons and embedded in a family drama. Like all mythical heroes, Cawood has an antagonist, the psychopathic rapist and killer Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton), who is the father of her grandson. In its structure, “Happy Valley” is very much a traditional British crime series, with seemingly unconnected plot strands and investigations that wind themselves together against a backdrop of cop-shop politics. In the new season’s major subplot, a less-than-sympathetic female character is caught between two seemingly more capable men whose weaknesses run deeper than hers.
ECB chief Christine Lagarde said the central bank for the 20 countries that share the euro was not pausing. "This is a very restrictive policy and it will turn into credit tightening and that will bring a recession." The ECB has now increased its key deposit rate by some 375 bps since last July, from -0.5%. U.S. rates have jumped 500 bps, with the Federal Reserve hiking again on Wednesday while opening the door to a pause. Gareth Rudd, a European equity fund manager at Chelverton Asset Management, said he was negative on European bank stocks because regulators will want them to conserve capital instead of paying dividends.
LONDON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Markets, bracing for a “no landing” scenario where global economic growth is resilient and inflation stays higher for longer, are dialling back appetite for both risk assets and government debt. But recent data reflecting still tight jobs markets has traders entertaining a new scenario where economic growth holds up and inflation remains sticky. “We’ve gone from softer landing to no landing - no landing being that (financing) conditions will remain tight,” said David Katimbo-Mugwanya, head of fixed income at EdenTree Asset Management.
