While criminal charges against corporations are fairly common, the overwhelming majority are against small, closely-held companies. Earlier criminal settlement now at riskThe potential charges hanging over Boeing currently revolve around that January 2021 deferred prosecution agreement. They have argued Boeing should face new criminal charges and pay a fine as great as $24.9 billion. In May, the Justice Department said it was looking into bringing criminal charges against Boeing once again due to a potential violation of that January 2021 agreement. Arlen said it is common for smaller companies to be forced out of business by criminal charges and the penalties that follow.

The agreement requires Uber to pay $148 million and Lyft to pay $27 million to the state. Campbell had been asking a judge to conclude that the state’s 55,000 Uber drivers and 35,000 Lyft drivers are employees under state law and therefore entitled to benefits such as a minimum wage, overtime and earned sick time. “Today’s agreement holds Uber and Lyft accountable.”The settlement provides for greater benefits and pay for Uber and Lyft drivers than provided under a similar settlement in November with New York state and under legislation signed into law in May in Minnesota. Princess Anne, the younger sister of King Charles III, was released from a hospital on Friday, five days after suffering a concussion and other injuries in an accident at her country residence, northeast of Bristol, England. Anne, 73, was hospitalized on Sunday after the incident, according to Buckingham Palace, which announced her release. Officials have been vague about what happened but have said they believe it involved some kind of impact with horses on the estate, Gatcombe Park. It was not clear whether Anne remembers the incident or whether they were any witnesses to it. On Monday, the palace said Anne would “make a full and swift recovery” and was being treated at in Southmead Hospital as “a precautionary measure for further observation.” But her husband, Timothy Laurence, visiting her a day later, acknowledged that her recovery, while steady, had been “slow.”In statement on Friday, Mr. Laurence said, “I would like to extend my warmest thanks to all the team at Southmead Hospital for their care, expertise, and kindness during my wife’s short stay.”

Renton, Washington CNN —The missing paperwork on the 737 Max that lost a door plug on an Alaska Airlines flight in January isn’t just making it difficult to find out who made the near tragic mistake. It was already well known that no documentation was found to show who worked on the door plug. Without the bolts, the door plug incident was pretty much inevitable. Removing a door plug after a plane arrives from Spirit AeroSystems rarely happens, Lund added, so no one was aware the door plug needed attention. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy has testified about the missing paperwork at Congressional hearings since then.

The technology to store renewable energy for long periods hasn’t quite been mastered, either. The interconnector would send renewable energy both east and west, taking advantage of the sun’s diurnal journey across the sky. The transatlantic interconnector is still a proposal, but networks of green energy cables are starting to sprawl across the world’s sea beds. They are fast becoming part of a global climate solution, transmitting large amounts of renewable energy to countries struggling to make the green transition alone. Not all of them carry renewable power exclusively — that’s sometimes determined by what makes up each country’s energy grid — but new ones are typically being built for a green energy future.

They were descendants of Koreans who moved to Northeast China, fleeing Japan’s brutal colonial rule in the early 20th century. In a twist of history, many like them have come to South Korea in recent decades, looking for better-paying jobs in their forebears’ homeland, now one of the world’s richest countries. The disaster drew new attention to the stark realities faced here by migrant workers, from China and from elsewhere. South Korea, with its shrinking population, has been rapidly increasing the number of workers it accepts from abroad to toil at the lowest rung of its labor market. Foreign workers are nearly three times as likely as the average South Korean to die in a work-related accident, according to a recent study.

Boeing has been under intense scrutiny with numerous federal investigations and congressional hearings since a January 5 Alaska Air Boeing 737 Max flight had a door plug blow off, leaving a gaping hole in both the plane and Boeing’s reputation. He also claims Boeing in August 2023 told employees to delete records about nonconforming parts, which led him to complain – but Boeing took no action. Jason Redmond/ReutersAt an April 17 hearing Boeing engineer Sam Salehpour testified that Boeing is putting out defective planes because he and others who complain faced pressure not to do so. But the January 5 incident aboard the Alaska Air flight happened just days before the end of the probationary period. Shortly after Boeing’s chief executive, Dave Calhoun, took his seat, families who lost relatives in the 2018 and 2019 crashes of the company’s 737 Max 8 planes called out to him, demanding that he turn around and acknowledge them and the photos of their loved ones. Among those behind Mr. Calhoun were the parents and brother of Samya Rose Stumo, the 24-year-old who was killed in the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines accident and the grandniece of Ralph Nader, the consumer advocate and former presidential candidate. Nearby sat the family of John Barnett, the former Boeing engineer and whistle-blower who died by suicide earlier this year in the midst of a Justice Department criminal investigation into the company. Others held photos of their loved ones lost in the crashes. “I would like to apologize, on behalf of all of our Boeing associates spread throughout the world, past and present, for your losses,” Mr. Calhoun said while facing the families.
