The Israeli military for the first time said it had intelligence relating to the whereabouts of hostages taken during raids into Israel by Hamas militants, who are holding at least 199 people captive in Gaza. Gen. Daniel Hagari said at a briefing Monday that the military "will not carry out an attack that would endanger our people." The presence of hostages across the Palestinian enclave has complicated Israel's response to the attacks that left at least 1,400 dead as it has carried out retaliatory airstrikes killing more than 2,750 people. Twenty-two of the hostages have been killed in Israeli airstrikes, Hamas said, in a claim that couldn’t be verified. Abu Obeida, a spokesman for Hamas’s armed wing, said in a statement on Telegram app that “dozens of hostages” had been hidden in “safe places and the tunnels of the resistance.”
