All three major averages posted gains for the third consecutive week, lifted by solid quarterly earnings and positive economic data. Earnings season ramps up next week, with five of the Super Six mega-cap stocks delivering results. Employment numbers are the most important economic data, with Friday's January nonfarm payrolls report carrying the most weight. The January ISM Manufacturing report on Thursday and December's factory orders report Friday are expected to show the sector still in contraction mode. But earnings and commentary this week from peer Sartorious made us encouraged about a return to growth in 2024.

The country's canned seafood industry is moving well beyond tuna sandwiches, a pandemic-era trend that began with Americans in lockdown demanding more of their cupboard staples. U.S. canned seafood industry sales have grown from $2.3 billion in 2018 to more than $2.7 billion so far this year, according to market research firm Circana. “I was eating the same canned fish that my great grandmother Rose in Brooklyn was eating in the 1930s," she said. “I thought that was just insane.”Her company, Fishwife Tinned Seafood Co., set out to offer high-quality, sustainably sourced seafood. “Our mission is really to just galvanize the canned fish industry and transform and make it what we think it can be,” Millstein said, adding that means offering much more “than tuna fish sandwiches."

Companies Aclaris Therapeutics Inc FollowNov 13 (Reuters) - Aclaris Therapeutics (ACRS.O) on Monday said it would stop development of its rheumatoid arthritis treatment after it failed in a mid-stage trial, sending its shares plunging 84% before the bell. The trial tested two doses of the drug, zunsemetinib, along with anti-rheumatic drug methotrexate compared to placebo and methotrexate in patients with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis who have inadequate response to methotrexate alone. There was no notable differentiation between zunsemetinib and placebo across any measures of efficacy at 12 weeks, the company said. The company will also be halting enrollment in an ongoing mid-stage trial studying the drug in psoriatic arthritis. The drug developer said it is also studying its drug ATI-1777 in patients with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis which is currently in mid-stage trial.

Carbon capture, utilization and storage processes have been around for half a decade, but are currently gaining momentum. Some focus on modifying already-standing power as well as industrial plants that work on carbon capture. Put more succinctly, Deutsche Bank analyst James Hubbard called carbon capture "simple in theory" but "capital intensive and divisive" in reality. He also noted the company has one of the industry's largest carbon capture positions. Staphos cited the potential of its carbon capture operations as a long-term reason to be optimistic, even as its more traditional end-market, homebuilding, faces near-term pressure.

Kiplinger rates the fund as the best US large-company stock fund from 2020 to 2022. That's not the most encouraging backdrop for stocks, especially since Abate said investors will be less comfortable taking big risks. He added that while the beginning of 2023 has been the opposite of 2022, that's not going to last. For the first black swan, Abate pointed towards the escalation of the Russian-Ukraine crisis, including the recent increase in air defense activity, ground troops, and the shipment of armored vehicles, tanks, and fighter aircraft. As for the second black swan, Abate also highlighted the Japanese government's "unprecedented" and "unsustainable" buying of the yen to boost the currency against others like the dollar.
MUMBAI, Jan 21 (Reuters) - India's Yes Bank (YESB.NS) has "strong" legal grounds to appeal against a court order quashing the write-off of its additional Tier-1 (AT1) bonds, Chief Executive Officer Prashant Kumar said on Saturday. "The judgment in itself is not questioning the regulatory guidelines in terms of writing off (AT1 bonds). "We have strong legal advises and opinions which interpret the issue in a different way and that makes a strong ground for us to appeal in the Supreme Court." The bonds were written off as part of a restructuring plan to rescue Yes Bank in March 2020. Yes Bank said in a stock exchange filing late on Friday it is in the process of preparing an appeal to the Supreme Court.
He foresees the S&P 500 falling another 30% and bottoming within the next three to nine months. Abate shared 11 compelling stocks to buy to mitigate looming recessionary risks. But with the looming threat of a recession, Abate believes that the days of big contrarian trade ideas are now behind us. Especially "idiosyncratic stocks that have kind of already felt the pain of a downturn, so even if a recession happens, their backlogs can get them through recessionary conditions." Two biotechnology names Abate noted as standout idiosyncratic ideas are Biogen (BIIB) and Gilead (GILD).
The Atlas Lions made history as the first African team to reach a World Cup semifinal. They made history as the first all-female refereeing crew for a men's World Cup match. It was Morocco's first World Cup win since 1998 — and its third-ever at the tournament. Less spoken about is that they also rate better on television than the men do in the World Cup. We’ll just have to wait and see, though with the US, Canada and Mexico hosting the 2026 World Cup, soccer isn’t going away anytime soon.

However, the breakthrough never came and Uruguay exits the World Cup at the group stage for the first time since 2002. No love lostMake no mistake, this fixture was one of the biggest grudge matches at the Qatar World Cup. Then, seemingly in the blink of an eye, it was 2-0 and Ghana’s World Cup hopes were once again evaporating against Uruguay. The Black Stars did at least begin the second half with more energy, as Osman Bukari flashed a shot across the goal inside the opening 60 seconds. Luis Suárez made himself a villain in Ghana for his role in their epic clash at the 2010 World Cup.
[1/9] Soccer Football - FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 - Fans in Montevideo watch Ghana v Uruguay - Montevideo, Uruguay - December 2, 2022 Uruguay fans look dejected after the match as Uruguay are eliminated from the World Cup REUTERS/Andres Cuenca OlaondoAL WAKRAH, Qatar, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Giorgian de Arrascaeta scored twice in six minutes to give Uruguay a 2-0 win over Ghana on Friday but it was not enough to prevent them crashing out of the World Cup on goals scored. Unable to score in their first two matches, Uruguay needed a win to advance from Group H and for already-qualified Portugal to avoid defeat by South Korea. But the Asian side's shock 2-1 win - the second goal coming in stoppage time - ensured they went through by virtue of having scored two more goals. With South Korea tied with Portugal late in their match and Uruguay two goals up, the South American side had one foot in the last 16 before the pendulum swung in the direction of South Korea, who ahead in the table on goals scored. Uruguay lacked the same kind of punch when they returned from the interval, however, and they failed to further break down Ghana and boost their goal difference, allowing South Korea to advance.
There had been talk that circus surrounding the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was distracting Fernando Santos's squad. Portugal's fans behind the goal sang his name and gave him another huge ovation when he was substituted in the 88th minute. It is easy to talk about Ronaldo in terms of statistics alone, with so many milestones chalked up. Ronaldo was locked in from the start, working tirelessly to find spaces in and around the massed Ghanaian defence. Importantly for Portugal's chances of going deep in Qatar, it was not just the Ronaldo show as his team mates, especially in the second half, took more responsibility.
After AMD and Intel parted ways, AMD reverse engineered Intel’s chips to make its own products that were compatible with Intel’s groundbreaking x86 software.
