Satellite-to-phones service provider AST SpaceMobile announced a partnership with Verizon on Wednesday, adding to the company's recent deal with AT&T to provide remote coverage across the United States. AST SpaceMobile is building satellites to provide broadband service to unmodified smartphones, in the nascent "direct-to-device" communications market. The company's chairman and CEO, Abel Avellan, touted AST's agreements with Verizon and AT&T as "essentially eliminating dead zones and empowering remote areas of the country with space-based connectivity." Verizon's deal effectively includes a $100 million raise for AST, as well, in the form of $65 million in commercial service prepayments and $35 million in debt via convertible notes. The companies said that $45 million of the prepayments "are subject to certain conditions" such as needed regulatory approvals and signing of a definitive commercial agreement.

It is the second letter that auto dealers have sent to the White House in two months on the EPA’s upcoming ruling, which could codify the agency's strictest-ever tailpipe emissions limits, proposed last April. The dealerships said Thursday that the Biden administration did not respond to their first letter sent on Nov. 28. Political Cartoons View All 253 ImagesThe EPA says its proposed regulations would require up to two out of every three vehicles sold in the U.S. to be electric by 2032. Most automakers around the globe have pledged hundreds of billions of dollars to transition to all-electric new vehicle sales in the coming decade as momentum to address climate change builds. Automakers can meet EPA regulations not just through pure-electric vehicle sales, but also through a sales mix including hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

U.S. semiconductor giant Qualcomm ended its partnership with satellite communications company Iridium to provide satellite-to-phone services, Iridium announced on Thursday. A number of smartphone makers, service providers and satellite companies have partnered on projects including Apple , Iridium, SpaceX, AT&T , T-Mobile , AST SpaceMobile and more. Qualcomm said in a statement smartphone makers have "indicated a preference towards standards-based solutions" for satellite-to-phone connectivity. Iridium noted in its release that the end of its agreement with Qualcomm allows it to re-engage with others who are working on satellite-to-cell projects. Iridium said the end of the agreements does not affect its full-year 2023 financial guidance.

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. There's a small spacecraft zipping around Earth right now, but, unlike most satellites in orbit, it wants to come down. The launch went great, the spacecraft has been healthy, drugs were made, but the necessary license for capsule reentry has not been granted. That may make sense for launch but it's a bit more difficult for reentry," Asparouhov said. How the stratosphere reacts to a reentry capsule in September is very different than February, which is very different than June."

Overview: Forecast or fantasyWe're now at least two years on from when a slew of space companies went public during the SPAC frenzy, and, look, none of them look great. Now a bit further down the road, I want to look at a different financial metric: 2023 revenue projections. I ran an informal series for a while to mark when a space company announced it was going public. The rest of the pack isn't as on the mark: A few companies are roughly halfway to their earlier 2023 revenue projections, or performing even better. Spire forecast 2023 revenue of $227 million and is closing in on about $107 million.

The satellite that will provide service to the Philippines is scheduled to launch in 2024. Astranis will own and operate the satellite, with services provider Orbits Corp. buying capacity through a long-term contract for a local Philippine internet service provider, HTechCorp. Its currently preparing to launch two more batches of satellites – which Astranis calls "Block 2" and "Block 3." But the company's approach marks a unique way of providing broadband service from space, Gedmark has previously said. Astranis will be able to "cover the entire Philippines with this one satellite," Gedmark noted.

The Arcturus satellite is seen en route to geosynchronous orbit. AstranisAstranis, a San Francisco-based company with an alternative approach to providing internet access from satellites, has its first spacecraft in orbit, and the company on Wednesday said it's working "perfectly." Astranis has already completed tests with the satellite, including connecting to user equipment in its service target of Alaska for the first time. "This test validates everything that we've been working on and working towards and it's a huge, huge deal," Gedmark said. The Arcturus satellite is seen deploying its solar arrays in the background from onboard the upper stage of SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket.

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. Recently I woke up to a text message from a satellite, sent by Lynk Global co-founder and CEO Charles Miller. "I asked them to send that text message from one of our phones," Miller said. So far, the satellite operators of Globalstar , Iridium , SpaceX and AST SpaceMobile are also chasing this untapped market. It plans on "launching many more this year" and has an eventual goal of up to 5,000 satellites in orbit.

LONDON, Dec 13 (Reuters) - George Orwell's dystopian novel "1984", set in an imagined future where totalitarian rulers deprive their citizens of all agency in order to maintain support for senseless wars, has topped electronic bestseller lists in Russia. The novel is the most popular fiction download of 2022 on the platform of the Russian online bookseller LitRes, and the second most popular download in any category, the state news agency Tass reported on Tuesday. And last month the Kremlin's spokesman said there had been no attacks on civilian targets, despite wave after wave of bombardment of Ukrainian power facilities that have left millions without heat or light in the depths of winter. However, the Russian translator of a brand new edition of "1984" sees the parallels to Orwell's novel elsewhere. AST SpaceMobile deployed a 693-square-foot communications satellite into orbit called BlueWalker 3. Astronomers say it's as bright as some of the brightest stars, and warn it could impact their work. AST SpaceMobile bills it as the "largest-ever commercial communications array deployed in low Earth orbit." Astronomers are also concerned about how satellite constellations contribute to the loss to "humanity's ability to experience the natural night sky," according to the IAU statement. When we look up at night sky, many of the bright lights might not be stars — but satellites.
