CNN —The 2024 Wimbledon women’s singles final is set: Jasmine Paolini will battle Barbora Krejčíková for the right to lift the iconic Venus Rosewater Dish for the first time in either of their careers. Paolini has already made history by becoming the first Italian woman to make the Wimbledon final and is seeking her maiden grand slam title after falling short in the French Open final last month. Paolini recently went on a surprise run to the French Open final, upsetting former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals and defeating 17-year-old rising star Mirra Andreeva in the semis. Coming into Wimbledon as the seventh seed this year, Paolini had never won a match on the lawns of SW19. A three-time finalist at the All-England Club, Novotná won the Wimbledon title in 1998 and passed away from cancer in 2017.

Follow live coverage of Wimbledon 2024Welcome to the Wimbledon briefing, where The Athletic will explain the stories behind the stories on each day of the tournament. On day eight of Wimbledon 2024, Elena Rybakina stepped up to her new billing, the ATP made a germy decision, and there was chaos on Court One. Elena Rybakina is one of three players left in the women’s field who has won a Grand Slam title before. Rybakina plays with a big serve and with flat power that keeps her ball low. More importantly, do we too often discount the data point of winning a tournament on grass the week before Wimbledon?

On day seven of Wimbledon 2024, Carlos Alcaraz showed off his tennis diet, Lulu Sun kept building her story, and Daniil Medvedev set up a rematch. To really feel good on a tennis court, Carlos Alcaraz needs to play points that get the crowd off their seats. He lost the third set 6-1 and went on a run of losing four service games in a row. Even in an international sport like tennis, Wimbledon quarterfinalist Lulu Sun has quite some heritage.

Iga Swiatek beat Coco Gauff in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) on Thursday to reach her fourth French Open final. After 10 days of mostly solid tennis, Gauff’s tournament ended in a flurry of scorching winners and spraying errors, against a player who generally makes opponents pay for nearly every one. Yet, with the win on Thursday, Swiatek expanded her career-long domination of Gauff to 11 wins in 12 matches. Swiatek broke Gauff’s serve in the next two games, the second time without Gauff winning a point. After Gauff saved two match points, and a third on Swiatek’s serve, the fourth was too far — Swiatek sailing through the finish line in 97 minutes.

Gauff was looking to add to the US Open title she won last year at the French Open. In Thursday’s other semifinal, Paolini defeated Russian 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva 6-3 6-1 to book a place in her first grand slam final.

If you’re a fan of players holding serve, I’m afraid Wednesday’s day session on Court Phillippe-Chatrier was not for you. But the growing movement of Russian women underscores the complexity and innate inequality of keeping so many men at war for so long while many more of fighting age remain at home. It is too soon to assess the size or impact of the movement of Russian women in a society which the authorities say is united behind the war effort. Women in Ukraine have also demanded their men be allowed back from the front. When Putin ordered a partial mobilisation of 300,000 reservists in September 2022, hundreds of thousands of young men rushed to leave Russia. Petitions to bring their men back produced almost no response, and Russia's defence ministry has barely engaged with the women, Andreeva said.

[1/7] Aug 30, 2023; Flushing, NY, USA; Novak Djokovic of Serbia hits to Bernabe Zapata Miralles of Spain on day three of the 2023 U.S. Open tennis tournament at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Earlier, Swiss young gun Dominic Stricker delivered a shock by grinding out a 7-5 6-7(2) 6-7(5) 7-6(6) 6-3 win over Greek seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas for his first top-10 win. Djokovic remains on course for a fourth U.S. Open title that would pull him level with Margaret Court's record haul of 24 Grand Slams. As Coco Gauff and Mirra Andreeva faced off at the U.S. Open on Wednesday, fans in the stands remarked about how old — really how young — they were while competing at the top of their sport. Gauff, who at 19 is not much older than the 16-year-old Andreeva, has for several years been a household name in tennis, ever since she made a run to the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2019. Her growing stardom means that she often finds herself playing in featured matches at the U.S. Open, in front of the most fans in person and in choice television slots. On Wednesday, that was in a 6-3, 6-2 win over Andreeva at Arthur Ashe Stadium, playing ahead of Novak Djokovic. It was a matchup, and a moment, that Gauff, a sixth-seeded American, controlled with ease while keeping a breezy but brisk pace.

The 19-year-old Gauff said she took a more aggressive approach into her second meeting with Andreeva after having to rally back to beat the Russian in three sets at this year's French Open. Andreeva, 16, has relished the Grand Slam stage in her debut season on tour having reached the third round at the French Open and fourth round at Wimbledon but was not able to conjure up similar magic in New York. Up next for Gauff will be a clash with Belgian 32nd seed Elise Mertens, who was a 3-6 7-6(7) 6-1 winner over American Danielle Collins in a match that lasted nearly three hours.
