For young, secular, politically progressive men and women, having children has become something of an afterthought. Indeed, the data suggest that people are having children later than they used to and are having fewer than they’d like. Unreserved enthusiasm for having children can come across as essentially reactionary. Over the past four years, we’ve conducted interviews and surveys with hundreds of young Americans about their attitudes toward having children. If they are not, they face a choice of returning to the dating pool, freezing their eggs (if they haven’t done so already), single parenting or giving up their hope of having kids of their own.

“More world leaders have sat on that box than any chair in history,” the photographer Platon, owner of that very box, told CNN in an interview conducted over Zoom. One of the girls that Platon photographed there was Esther Faraja. Vladimir Putin, photographed by Platon for Time’s Person of the Year in 2007, initially liked the image that Platon produced. Platon photographed Burmese politician and activist Aung San Suu Kyi in 2010, shortly after she was released from nearly 15 years of house arrest. Platon photographed members of the Burmese LGBTQ+ community who are living in exile and fighting against legislation that criminalizes same-sex behaviour.

The bodies of the two Ukrainian soldiers lay motionless in a field for months. The soldiers’ relatives identified their bodies from aerial footage gathered by drone. Andriy Zaretsky — were dead. Yet more than four months later, the Ukrainian military still lists them as missing, even though subsequent drone footage provided by a fellow soldier weeks later showed them still lying there. This confusion, and the lengthy, difficult process of obtaining official declaration of the deaths, is far from isolated, and has emerged as another painful consequence of the two-year-old war.

CNN —Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed into law a key piece of legislation overhauling the country’s mobilization rules. The legislation places a new requirement on all men between 18 and 60 to register with Ukraine’s military and to carry their registration documents on them at all times. Ukraine’s parliament passed the law last week and Zelensky gave presidential approval Tuesday. A Ukrainian servicemen fires a howitzer towards Russian troops in Kherson region, Ukraine, in March. After the law passed last week, dozens of wives and relatives of servicemen gathered outside Ukraine’s parliament to protest and demand that mobilization deadlines be included.

CNN —Ukraine’s parliament has scrapped plans to give soldiers who have spent prolonged periods fighting on the frontlines the chance to return home on rotation, after passing a draft law seeking to boost the number of soldiers in its military. The draft law passed Thursday with 283 votes in favor, including a raft of measures aimed at providing a desperately needed boost for Ukraine’s military. Stock futures were little changed on Monday, with rising Treasury yields limiting meaningful gains for equities and investors gearing up for forthcoming inflation data. Nasdaq 100 futures advanced 0.1%, while Dow Jones Industrial Average futures gained 16 points, or 0.04%. Stocks ended Monday's trading largely little changed, with the S&P 500 closing with a marginal decline of 0.04%. The 10-year Treasury yield topped 4.4%, as investors awaited Wednesday's consumer price index report for more insight into how the Federal Reserve's policy has been affecting inflation. However, she cautioned that a continued rise in the 10-year yield could signal cause for concern for the broader market.

London CNN —Six journalists working for independent media outlets in Russia were arrested in a span of just a few hours this week on the eve of the anniversary of American reporter Evan Gershkovich’s detention in the city of Yekaterinburg. The journalists include Antonina Favorskaya, who covered the late Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said Thursday. On Friday, Gershkovich marked the grim milestone of one year in Russian detention. Shortly after his arrest, the Wall Street Journal reporter was charged with espionage — an accusation vehemently denied by Gershkovich, his employer and the US government. APThe six journalists, including Favorskaya, were arrested on Wednesday and Thursday, RSF said.

Much of 20th-century classical music owes a deep thanks to jazz. And while on paper, the Philadelphia Orchestra’s concert at Carnegie Hall on Tuesday night was organized for a festival at the hall, Fall of the Weimar Republic: Dancing on the Precipice, the subtext was American jazz. All three of the composers on the program (Stravinsky, Weill and Gershwin) loved and, to one extent or another, made references to the style in their music. Weill, who left Europe for the United States after the fall of the Weimar Republic, was also steeped in jazz. The orchestra staked out rhythmic details with crystalline precision and saw each phrase through with patience and a rich sound.
