And, after The New York Times dared to defend its editorial board member, former President Donald Trump’s acting director of national intelligence, Richard Grenell, tweeted: “Dear God....the @nytimes justifies mocking the American flag because Donald Trump likes the American flag. It’s easy for some to dismiss such conflation of the American flag with racism as overwrought. When an unarmed young Jewish man rushed onstage, he was viciously beaten by attendees before police took him away. The American flag as a weapon, wielded against an American. Such hijacking of the American flag by people who rightly evoke our disgust should make clear that it’s a mistake to treat the flag as a sacrosanct object.

PREVIEWAs millions of workers head back to the office this summer, many will return without a desk of their own. But hot desks also mean extra time spent managing reservations, coordinating with teams and helping employees feel a sense of belonging without a dedicated spot for them in the office. OfficeTogether software allows people to reserve desks up to 30 days in advance. Some companies also want to avoid assigning desks so they can clean them more frequently as part of enhanced pandemic-era hygiene protocols. One final thing that workers may miss with hot desks is the chance to spruce up their workspaces with personal memorabilia.

REUTERS/Charles PlatiauCarmaker Stellantis (STLA.MI) said on Thursday that its French Citroen unit had been charged with consumer fraud by French prosecutors in a far-reaching diesel emissions probe. Citroen would have to make a deposit of 8 million euros and provide a bank guarantee of 25 million euros for potential compensation for losses, Stellantis said in a statement. Renault (RENA.PA), Peugeot, owned by Stellantis, and Volkswagen France, the French unit of German carmaker Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE), have also been charged in France over the dieselgate investigation. Several carmakers in Europe have come under scrutiny since the Volkswagen "dieselgate" scandal which erupted in 2015 over test-cheating in the United States, at a time when regulators are becoming ever tougher on pollution standards.

House Democrats plan to introduce five bills aimed at weakening big tech monopolies, Politico reported. The bills would let regulators block mergers between rivals and unwind past ones, and bar some anticompetitive practices. House Democrats plan to introduce five separate bills as early as this week that could dramatically reign in big tech companies' economic dominance, Politico reported Wednesday. The bills address a number of lawmakers' concerns about the growing power of tech titans like Amazon, Apple, Alphabet-owned Google, and Facebook. The report was the result of an extensive investigation in which the committee probed whether major tech companies had used their size and market position to engage in anticompetitive behaviors that unfairly harmed rivals, consumers, and society more broadly.

The $187,500 fine was for knowingly and willfully violating federal campaign finance law with the $150,000 hush payment — what the FEC said was an illegal in-kind contribution to the Trump campaign. But the news is bittersweet, because the FEC also let Trump off the hook for his role directing this illegal scheme. Common Cause has always maintained that Trump cheated en route to winning the 2016 election by violating campaign finance laws. Contributions from individuals were limited to $2,700 in the 2016 election. The last hope for Trump accountability is the DOJ, which has until August to charge him for the McDougal payment.

After the emails were made public, Andersen tweeted this week that "we seriously considered a lab leak a possibility," but reconsidered upon further review of the evidence. Scientists who argue against the lab leak theory have often conflated the two distinct scenarios. “There’s no new evidence that would really support a lab leak hypothesis,” said Robert Garry, a virus expert at Tulane University. The recently released emails don’t shed much light on what Fauci was saying privately about the lab leak theory, in part because many of his emails are redacted. After the WHO team initially ruled out a lab leak, only to be overruled by the agency chief, critics accused Daszak of having a disqualifying conflict of interest, something he disputes.

The FEC revealed the penalty in correspondence Tuesday with Common Cause, which had filed a complaint against Enquirer publisher AMI, Trump and the Trump campaign about the hush money payout to Karen McDougal after word of the supermarket tabloid's unusual payment to silence a salacious story — dubbed "catch and kill" — became public. The complaint charged the payment was made "for the purpose of influencing the 2016 presidential general election." "All the other actors have been held accountable, but still no accountability for former President Trump," Ryan said. Trump has denied having relationships with the model and actress, and defended the payments in a 2018 interview with Fox News. Ryan said he was baffled at how the commission could vote to fine the Enquirer and not Trump.

Even when there is no storm, rising seas contribute to more significant tidal flooding, where streets fill with water even on sunny days. The expanding saltwater threatens to spoil the underground aquifer that supplies the region’s drinking water, and to crack old sewer pipes and aging septic tanks. And that’s just sea-level rise. “It’s divided up in ways that make things really, really difficult to move forward. The estimate for Miami-Dade County alone to phase out some 120,000 septic tanks is about $4 billion, and that does not include the thousands of dollars that each homeowner would also have to pay.

The Federal Election Commission will let former President Donald Trump avoid punishment for directing hush money payments to his alleged ex-mistress Karen McDougal — but the publisher of The National Enquirer agreed to pay more than $187,500 for its role in the scandal, records showed Tuesday. Trump's former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, admitted to paying off Daniels at Trump's behest shortly before the 2016 presidential election. Federal prosecutors have said, without actually naming Trump, that he directed Cohen to facilitate the payments to both women. "It's good news that the Federal Election Commission is holding the tabloid company AMI accountable for its illegal actions in the 2016 election," Ryan added. It allows transgender-identified male state prison inmates to transfer into women’s prisons based on “individual preference”—no hormones, surgery or time spent living as the opposite sex required. Spokeswoman Terry Thornton of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says 264 male prisoners have declared a nonmale identity and formally requested transfer to women’s facilities. If Congress passes the Equality Act—the House already has—incarcerated biological men who identify as female would be entitled to transfer into women’s federal prisons and possibly also state prisons nationwide. Not well, according to Amie Ichikawa, who was released in 2013 from the Central California Women’s Facility in Chowchilla, where she served five years for assault and kidnapping. All acknowledged that some biological men who are transgender have been subject to abuse in men’s prisons.
