Or maybe South Korea, where Samsung has built an impressive so-called foundry business making semiconductors for other companies. AdvertisementThe US company took a major step recently when it separated its Foundry business from its chip-design business. Intel's Foundry business won't really be able to challenge TSMC until it gets several big customers. Intel's Foundry business just needs way more of these customers. How would Intel's Foundry business perform as a separate company, split off from the design parts?

The Fed was widely expected to lower short-term interest rates, but the 25 basis points versus 50 debate raged right up until the announcement. Mortgage rates: We talked last week during our September Monthly Meeting about how housing activity can start to pick up when mortgage rates fall off their cycle highs to somewhere in the range between 5% and 6.5%. However, what the data shows is how sensitive activity is to every dip in mortgage rates. Here's a rapid-fire update on all 32 stocks in Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust, the portfolio we use for the CNBC Investing Club. AMD shares have caught a bid in recent days, but they're still cheap considering the growth of its AI processors. Broadcom : Investors who don't own any Broadcom yet should consider starting a position here, Jim said. Although it's tempting to offload shares, Jim said to stick with Honeywell for now because there's huge value in individual businesses like aerospace. Some tech stocks are due for outperformance heading into year's end, according to UBS. Nvidia dragged other chip stocks down with it, with the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) suffering its worst day since March 2020. Wall Street is also bullish on the chipmaker, with 41 of the 50 analysts covering the name issuing a strong buy or buy rating, according to LSEG. In the IT hardware and electronics manufacturing services sector, UBS named Dell Technologies , given a PC refresh cycle and developing strength in AI optimized servers. UBS has a buy rating on the stock, and its target implies more than 48% upside from Tuesday's close.

Jim Cramer names chip stocks to buy on the dip

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday recommended three chip stocks to buy at a discount: Micron , AMD and Arm . "I think the chip stocks have sold off way too hard," he said. The chip sector has retreated in recent weeks, with SMH , a prominent semiconductor exchange-traded fund, down more than 18% from its 52-week high in July, according to FactSet. Micron : Cramer called Micron "the market leader in memory chips," and said the hyperscalers building out data centers need memory. He added that he thinks the stock is currently cheap based on its earnings estimates for the next fiscal year.

Anything above 4% indicates the market is overbought, anything below a minus 5% means the market is oversold.) I am just prematurely predicting other investors fleeing the stock because they think Warren knows more than them. Many investors thought that Amazon was the best set up of the Mag Seven going into earnings. We are right smack in a most perilous moment because the Fed doesn't want to move too fast but the stock market does and the Fed does not care about that. I don't think a presidential election is all that conducive to the market.

Nvidia is getting a boost from that and surging after being renamed Morgan Stanley's top semi pick. AdvertisementChip stocks were rallying across the board on Wednesday, driven by a big earnings beat from AMD and Morgan Stanley naming Nvidia a top stock pick. Other stocks getting a lift included ASML (up 11%), Qualcomm (up 6%), and Samsung (up 4%). In addition to riding AMD's wave higher, Nvidia was renamed Morgan Stanley's top semiconductor stock pick. "Through those concerns, the earnings environment is likely to remain strong, for NVIDIA and for the whole AI complex," the analysts said.

AMD sold off on its first-quarter earnings report due in large part to its MI300 sales guidance falling short of sky-high expectations. Nvidia remains the dominant player in AI chips, but AMD is continuing to carve out a lane in the rapidly expanding market. Among the highlights, Su said Microsoft has expanded its use of the AI chips for certain software applications, including messaging app Teams. AMD's data center business is now nearly 50% of companywide revenues, up from 37% in the fourth quarter of 2023. Within data center, sales of both AI chips and traditional server chips will grow in the third quarter, Su said.

AMD says data center sales more than doubled in a year

AMD shares are down about 6% in 2024, even though the company is the second-largest vendor of data center GPUs after Nvidia . Investors want to see AMD take market share away from its longtime rival Nvidia with its MI300X AI chip and signal growth in its data center AI business. Earlier this year, AMD said it expected $4 billion in AI chips sales this year, or about 15% of the company's expected sales. AMD AI chip sales are reported in the company's Data Center segment, which grew 115% year-over-year to $2.8 billion, driven by an increase in AI GPU shipments, AMD said. Sales for PCs are reported in the company's Client segment, which rose 49% year-over-year to $1.5 billion, versus expectations of $1.43 billion from Street Account.
