DETROIT — Stellantis is resurrecting the all-electric Fiat 500e for the U.S. market, as the automaker begins to release electric vehicles domestically to meet tightening fuel economy regulations. The 500e will be the first all-electric vehicle offered in the U.S. by Stellantis since the company formed in 2021. At just over 3,000 pounds, Stellantis says the 500e is expected to be the lightest all-electric vehicle in the segment. The electric Fiat 500e as well as gas-powered models of the car were previously built at a factory in Mexico by Fiat Chrysler. A Fiat spokesman said additional 500e models will be available at Fiat dealerships in the future.

Madonna Lived to Tell
  + stars: | 2023-12-01 | by ( Guy Trebay | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
The account, The AIDS Memorial, is an evolving testament, told in photographs, videos and user stories, to lives lost to a devastating and, it can occasionally seem, forgotten epidemic. To date, Mr. Armstrong has posted more than 11,000 of these tales, and if you are aware of them at all, that may owe to one woman: Madonna. The 65-year-old singer was early among the 269,000 followers of The AIDS Memorial. And, if it did not inspire her outright, the Instagram account served as the basis for a showstopping element of her current “Celebration” tour, which comes to Barclays Center in mid-December. By extension, Madonna’s choice to deploy the montage early in each “Celebration” performance as a backdrop for a rendition of the 1986 song “Live to Tell” is as politically trenchant as it is deeply personal.

John set up his AIDS Foundation in 1992 and has helped raise millions of dollars to prevent HIV infections and reduce stigma. "This evening I was privileged to welcome Sir Elton John and acknowledge his exceptional contribution to the global fight against HIV and AIDS — personally and through the Elton John AIDS Foundation,” Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle said on X, formerly Twitter. The Parliament reception for John came ahead of World AIDS Day, which takes place on Friday. “Sir Elton has been a powerful voice for change in the U.K. and the world,” Sunak told lawmakers. “Through the brilliant work of the AIDS Foundation he has raised awareness of the issue, reduced stigma and saved lives.”

Citizens aged 65 and above make up almost a fifth of Singapore's population in 2023. Nicky Loh | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesSINGAPORE — Singapore's population is aging fast. As the median population age increases, so do opportunities for Singapore businesses providing products and services for seniors. According to Aging Asia's Silver Economy Index 2020, Singapore shows the largest market potential for an aging population among 15 Asia-Pacific countries. Citibank estimates that consumers will likely spend more to treat and support the elderly, driving growth potential for health care and health services.

When Club Music Went Commercial, Remixes Kept It Real
  + stars: | 2023-09-12 | by ( Craig Seymour | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
Remixes can free a song from the dictates of radio trends, marketability and the pop conventions of boy-meets-girl. It makes me think about what, on the surface, seems so irrational: a Black queer person risking alienation from the larger Black community to shape a distinct identity around the inexplicable wants of the heart. You just had to learn it for yourself.”There is another function of the remixes I cherish most: They instigate precious memories. The beat is the confession, which recognizes, changes, and conquers time.” Some remixes remind me of the 1980s and ’90s, when music forged in Black queer spaces began reaching the mainstream. Remixes were one way of preserving Black queer aesthetics amid economic incentives to make club music more commercial.

CNN —For people facing a greater threat of cognitive decline, getting hearing aids could cut your risk in half, according to a new study. Over the past decade, research has established that hearing loss is one of the biggest risk factors for developing dementia, but it wasn’t clear whether intervening with hearing aids would reduce the risk, he added. In the total group, hearing aids did not appear to reduce cognitive decline, the study said. Why hearing loss may increase dementia riskEveryone’s hearing declines with age, Lin said. In those cases, lower cost over-the-counter hearing aids — available without a prescription — may be a good option.

Bed Bath & Beyond Files for Bankruptcy
  + stars: | 2023-04-23 | by ( Jordyn Holman | Lauren Hirsch | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Bed Bath & Beyond came out of the 2008 downturn a winner. Competitors like Sharper Image and Linens ‘n Things filed for bankruptcy, but Bed Bath & Beyond actually expanded its business by acquiring other retailers. Now, as the U.S. economy experiences another period of uncertainty, Bed Bath & Beyond is no longer on top, the result of an increasingly unwieldy corporate structure and its failure to fully reckon with the ascendance of online shopping. The company’s 360 Bed Bath & Beyond stores and 120 Buy Buy Baby stores and websites will remain open. To help fund its operations in bankruptcy, Bed Bath & Beyond has raised $240 million from the investment firm Sixth Street Specialty Lending.
