Zepto is the top startup to work for in India in 2024, according to LinkedIn. LinkedIn released its seventh annual top startups list for India, showcasing the country's emerging companies based on data from the professional social-networking site. In fact, India has the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world, according to official government site Startup India. In addition, the report noted the number of startups in India rose 71.5% from about 20,000 startups in 2021 to over 34,000 startups 2023. British real estate portal Rightmove on Wednesday rejected a sweetened $8.1 billion takeover proposal from Australian property listing firm REA Group, saying the bid undervalued the company. "The board considered the increased proposal... and concluded that the increased proposal continues to be unattractive and materially undervalues the company and its future prospects," Rightmove said in a statement. The most recent proposal from REA Group, which is 62% owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp, consists of 341 pence in cash and 0.0422 new REA shares, giving Rightmove an implied value of 770 pence per share. The latest bid came after an initial offer of 705 pence per share, or 5.6 billion pounds, and the second one of 749 pence per share, were rejected by Rightmove.

A steady decline in mortgage rates to two-year lows has current homeowners rushing to take advantage of potential savings. Applications to refinance a home loan surged 20% last week compared with the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association's seasonally adjusted index. "As a result of lower rates, week-over-week gains for both conventional and government refinance applications increased sharply." Mortgage applications to purchase a home rose just 1% for the week and were 2% higher than the same week one year ago. Mortgage rates haven't moved much to start this week, and will likely wait for more pressing economic data later this week and at the start of October.

Japan has been contending with a rice shortage in recent months due to a mix of bad weather and an increase in tourists, undergirded by the country's restrictive rice policies. Consumers also stockpiled more rice in preparation for Japan's typhoon season and a major earthquake warning, the USDA added. Local media NHK partly attributed the shortage to an influx in tourists pushing up demand for sushi and other rice-based dishes. Engineer Don Kramer is slated to testify as the investigation continues into the implosion of OceanGate's Titan submersible. The Coast Guard opened a public hearing earlier this month that is part of a high level investigation into the cause of the implosion. Coast Guard officials noted at the start of the hearing that the submersible had not been independently reviewed, as is standard practice. The CNN Poll was conducted by SSRS online and by telephone September 19-22, 2024, among 2,074 registered voters nationwide drawn from a probability-based panel. Likely voters include all registered voters in the poll weighted for their predicted likelihood of voting in this year’s election.
