The median wealth of lower-income households shot up 101% between December 2019 and December 2021, while the middle class enjoyed a 29% increase. High earners had a median net worth of $803,400 in December 2021, while the middle class and lower-income households had nest eggs of $204,100 and $24,500, respectively, Pew found. Half of these households had a net worth of $500 or less in December 2021, compared to a net worth of $0 two years earlier. Poorer Hispanic households had a median net worth of $0, compared to a negative net worth of $1,100 at the end of 2019. Other government reports show that lower-income Americans lost ground in 2022.

Middle-income homeowners gained $122,100 in wealth, with homes appreciating 68% over the past decade, according to the report. The study considered a household low-income if it earned an income no greater than 80% of the area median income. Middle-income homeowners are those with incomes over than 80% of the area’s median income but less than 200%. Black homeowners experienced the smallest wealth gains among any other racial or ethnic group, accumulating $115,000 in wealth in the last decade. Along with the wealth gains accumulated over the past decade, homeowners also reduced their debt by 21%.

Low-income Americans were the most likely to say their situation has deteriorated, according to Gallup, with 61% of respondents responding negatively. About 200 people ice fishing in Northern Minnesota were rescued Monday afternoon after a large sheet of ice broke away from shore and drifted into Upper Red Lake, according to the local sheriff. A fisherman called 911 at around 11:30 a.m. Monday saying the anglers were stranded, according to a press statement from the Beltrami County Sheriff’s office. Upper Red Lake is about 300 miles north of the Twin Cities, and 40 miles south of the Canadian border.

A majority of Americans said last month that price increases were causing financial hardship for their households, a Gallup survey released this week found. Although the increase in the hardship rate among lower-income Americans was smaller, about three-quarters of that group reported hardships.
