Carl Icahn's investment company Icahn Enterprises won the dismissal of a lawsuit claiming it artificially inflated its share price by issuing unsustainably high dividends to help the billionaire investor obtain large amounts of personal loans. A spokesman for Icahn Enterprises did not immediately respond to a similar request. The shareholders said Icahn Enterprises' true health became evident as its Auto Parts Plus business went bankrupt, the company slashed its dividend and Icahn renegotiated his loans. He also said Icahn Enterprises' 2021 annual report disclosed Carl Icahn's share pledges, and that there were no allegations that any defendant conducted insider trading. For most of his four-plus decades in Hollywood, Thomas R. Moore has worked as a picture editor on network television shows. When the episode was done, he would receive another episode’s worth of footage, and so on, until he and two other editors worked through the TV season. This model, which typically pays picture editors $125,000 to $200,000 a year, has mostly survived the shorter seasons of the streaming era, because editors can work on more than one show in a year. But with the advent of artificial intelligence, Mr. Moore fears that the job will soon be hollowed out. “We’ll become electronic gig workers.”

CNN —More and more people are using marijuana before or during pregnancy to ease nausea, pain, stress and help with sleep. What about the potential danger to the mother if she uses cannabis before or during early pregnancy? People who used marijuana in early pregnancy also had a “19% greater risk of placental abruption,” Young-Wolff said. Using at least once a month or more was linked to a greater risk of placental abruption, the study found. “More studies are needed to understand whether and how cannabis use in pregnancy may impact risk for gestational diabetes,” Moore said.

5 Minutes That Will Make You Love Wayne Shorter

This month we feature Wayne Shorter, the iconoclastic composer and tenor saxophonist whose work with Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Weather Report and through his own solo discography has influenced generations of like-minded visionaries to push the boundaries of jazz. As a member of the quintet, Shorter once said, “it wasn’t the bish-bash, sock-’em-dead routine we had with Blakey, with every solo a climax. “All of us wrote some songs, I wrote a couple of things myself, but the main writer: Wayne,” Hancock told me over the phone recently. But most of the things we recorded were written by Wayne.” The quintet broke up in 1968; Shorter worked with Davis until 1970. In recent years, even though they’d been collaborators for several decades, Hancock and Shorter became best friends.

Four Missouri prison guards were charged with murder on Friday and a fifth with involuntary manslaughter for their roles in the death of a Black man who died last year after they pepper sprayed him, covered his face with a mask and left him in a restraint chair, the authorities said. The man, Othel Moore Jr., 38, died of positional asphyxiation on Dec. 8 at the Jefferson City Correctional Center, according to court records, which list homicide as the cause of death. The episode that led to Mr. Moore’s death occurred during a sweep by the Missouri Department of Corrections Emergency Response Team of one of the prison’s housing units that was being searched for contraband, according to court records. Mr. Moore was searched and stripped down to his boxer shorts, and staff members used pepper spray on him multiple times and placed him in a restraint system with a spit mask, which is supposed to prevent spit from hitting others, and a padded helmet, records show. He was then taken to a different housing unit, where he was left in a cell with the spit mask, helmet and restraint system.

They wanted to find out whether this type of facility already had tools that could remove microplastics from wastewater. In a single pass, their device can remove between 84% and 94% of microplastics in water, according to a press release. On a smaller scale, it could filter microplastics in laundry machines and even fish tanks. In another 2023 study, researchers at Shinshu University tested a similar ultrasound-filtering method to remove microplastics from water. But Ou and Huang say their device is simpler, more efficient, and the first to use ultrasound to block and filter microplastics directly.

Scientists identify ‘degrees of Kevin Bacon’ gene

Even humble fruit flies organize themselves into regularly spaced clusters, researchers have found. Within those social networks, certain individuals will often stand out as “gatekeepers,” playing an important role for cohesion and communication within that group. New research published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications has identified a gene responsible for regulating the structure of social networks in fruit flies. The study opened up new opportunities for exploring the molecular evolution of social networks and collective behavior in other animals. How the N.F.L. Draft Became a Trading Floor
  + stars: | 2024-04-25 | by ( Ben Blatt | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
The Bears’ pick — expected to be U.S.C. quarterback Caleb Williams — was acquired last year as part of a blockbuster deal in which Chicago also got receiver D.J. Moore and three other draft picks. That trade is part of an increasing draft-night trend in the pursuit of “draft capital.” As teams become much more sophisticated in their understanding of how much a draft pick is worth, particularly in later rounds, draft picks have become increasingly common as deal-sweeteners, or to round out intricate trade packages.

Recent weakness in the market shouldn't deter investors from finding pockets of opportunity, particularly in artificial intelligence-related companies, according to BlackRock's Kate Moore. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S & P 500 fell for a second week last week. "I think healthy consolidation after an extremely strong return in the first quarter is completely fair, and doesn't change the fundamentals," Moore said in an interview. Moore sees an opportunity in two of BlackRock's highest-conviction themes: AI-adjacent software and semiconductor companies, and global commodity producers and miners, particularly those related to copper. She expects better breadth in terms of earnings growth this quarter, which should support long-term investor confidence in the equity market.
