Renewable energy has kept the power grid "remarkably stable" despite the significant strain, an expert says. Texas leads the nation in wind-generated power and is third in the country for solar power. As these extreme temperatures continue to bake Texas, residents are cranking up their air conditioning, straining the state's power grid. Texas produces more wind-powered electricity than any other state and is a national leader in solar energy alongside California and Florida. Some state and national Republicans, however, have pushed back against legislation that would further strengthen the clean energy sources keeping the air conditioners running in Texas this summer.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice raised the price of bottled water for incarcerated people by 50%. This further limits access to water, as the tap water is often "simply filthy," one prison reform advocate told KVUE. Amid this punishing heat — which is even still milder than last year, during which at least 306 people died of heat-related illness in Texas — the Texas Department of Criminal Justice has raised the price of bottled water available in prisons by 50%, local outlet KVUE reports. Prison reform advocate Amite Dominick told KVUE that adds financial pressure on families where the breadwinner is incarcerated. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment about water quality in state prisons.

CNN —As an unrelenting heat wave enters its 39th consecutive day, millions of people from California to Florida are asking: When will it end? El Paso, Texas, has been in the triple digits for 32 consecutive days. In Miami, the record warm sea surface temperatures, combined with light winds are causing stifling heat: The heat index there topped 100 degrees or more for a record 37 consecutive days. The heat will remain until a shift in the weather pattern occurs and either breaks apart the heat dome or moves it out of the country completely. No end in sight for hardest-hit areasThis graphic shows which areas should continue to experience heat through the rest of July.

HR firm Checkr ranked the worst US cities for employment opportunities and earning potential. Cities based around agriculture and manufacturing have seen slower job growth and lower salaries. Earning potential was based on each city's real per capita personal income, 10-year income growth, and percentage of households that make over $200,00 a year. "The findings show that the current state of the US job market varies in big and small cities," Korelevich said. Jackson, Toledo, El Paso, and Lakeland also have a "less healthy job market," per US News.
One of the men pistol-whipped Aldrich as others pummeled the accused assailant, leaving the suspect with multiple injuries that required hospitalization. Aldrich's lawyers have asserted in court filings that their client identifies as "non-binary" in gender and prefers them/they pronouns. At a previous court hearing, a defense lawyer intimated that Aldrich may have been in the club previously, including on the night of the massacre. El Paso County District Judge Michael McHenry was assigned to preside over the preliminary hearing, which was scheduled to run for three days, according to the court docket. The Q nightclub shooting is not the defendant's first brush with the law.
But plenty of Americans instead choose to get dressed up, attend parties or travel in celebration of New Year's Eve. The majority of Americans (70%) plan to spend at least $50 on their New Year's Eve plans, WalletHub found. Still, Irvine, California, beats those cities as the most expensive place to spend New Year's Eve:Irvine, Calif. Miami New York Honolulu New Orleans Seattle Oakland, Calif. San Francisco Washington, D.C. Henderson, Nev. The survey found over 80 million Americans are planning to travel for New Year's Eve, with nearly half expecting to drive. While several of the best-rated cities also find themselves on the most expensive list, the least expensive cities aren't inherently less fun.
The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday to keep in place for now a controversial Trump-era rule that allows Customs and Border Patrol officials to deport migrants at the U.S. southern border as a public health measure in response to the pandemic. The Supreme Court also agreed to hear oral arguments in February and rule on whether the states can intervene, with a decision due by the end of June. More than 2 million people have been deported at the southern border under the policy since 2020. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts temporarily blocked the Biden administration earlier this month from ending the controversial policy. But Republican-led states intervened in the case and successfully petitioned the Supreme Court to block that lower court ruling.
