A onetime commodities backwater, congestion trading has become a growing business in recent years as the demand for electricity and volatility on the power grid in the US has soared. The financial category, which includes specialized power-trading companies, banks, hedge funds, and large proprietary trading firms, dominates the market, in part because the physical power firms typically operate in only one or two regions. He launched three congestion trading teams for the firm, including in California and Texas after those states introduced congestion trading in 2008 and 2010, respectively. Citadel, along with Susquehanna International Group and Tower Research, has been involved in FTR trading since the market's infancy. Volatility has been increasing on the power grid, in part because of changing weather patterns, Jeev added.

Hedge funds are off to a good start in 2024 after mediocre performance last year. January returns were strong at multi-strategy managers like Citadel, Point72, and Millennium. A leaner Schonfeld closed out a rough 2023 on high note, and it's kept the momentum going in 2024. In 2023, even the best multi-strategy hedge funds trailed the broader stock market. Citadel, a hedge fund, and Citadel Securities, its sister market-making firm, were founded by billionaire Ken Griffin in 1990 and 2002. This work-hard, play-hard culture is evident in the firms' training of new employees, including its most junior ranks. They also had a Q&A with Peng Zhao, the CEO of Citadel Securities, who touched on how to prioritize time and find ways to be a leader, among other topics. The training program hasn't always been quite this involved. Fan lives in New York and will be based in Citadel Securities' Manhattan office.

Weather derivatives were born in the late 1990s. Climate change and the El Nino weather phenomenon combined to make the northern hemisphere summer of 2023 the hottest ever recorded, according to the European Union Climate Change Service. Weather derivatives let buyers hedge against the risk that the weather will damage their business. Average open interest in CME weather futures and options contracts in September was around 170,000 contracts, compared to roughly 10 times that for crude oil - although market participants reckon 90% of the weather derivatives market is in over-the-counter deals. "Extreme weather events tend to make good marketing for weather futures," said Samuel Randalls, a professor at University College London who focuses on weather and climate.

So, which Wall Street firms are still letting employees work from home at least part of the time? On days employees are in, the firm focuses on taking "advantage of our shared location," it reads. At that time, the firm called for its employees to come into the office a minimum of three days a week. Since then, most employees have been in the office throughout the week, according to a person familiar with the firm.

But on Wall Street, a crisis is just a bit of financial engineering away from becoming an opportunity to make money. That's where inflation traders come in. The strategy of betting on the swings in consumer prices has exploded in recent years, with revenues from inflation trading going from $700 million in 2019 to $3.9 billion in 2022. And while inflation trading has the potential to generate some big returns, making your money back on hires like these might be a tall task if inflation has a short shelf life. Ken Griffin, founder and CEO of Citadel, believes the hype around artificial intelligence could be overblown at this early stage. "I do think the AI community is making a terrible mistake by being full of hype on the near-term implications of generative AI," Griffin said Tuesday during an event for Citadel's new class of interns in Fort Lauderdale, FL. "I think they're actually doing everybody a huge disservice with the level of hype they are creating." One industry that could see a material impact from AI is programming and software engineering, Griffin said. "Programing is going be a big target for generative AI," Griffin said, asked by an intern about AI's impact on his business.
